@HortonKansas- Well put about CBGs! This guitar was built by Bruce Trapps of Devil Guitars Tasmania, out of Australian Corrugated Iron. It is a beautiful guitar, and sounds even batter than it looks!

Thanks, Justin. It seems that I have to watch this video almost every time I build a CBG. Sometimes I get lucky and get it right the first time, but that is rare. You videos are always very helpful. I loved the tin roof guitar. Cudos to Bruce (cigarboxtriplestring) for building it. He does some beautiful work.

Great video, definitely answered some questions, thanks! I just saw Justin and that bad ass sheet metal guitar at the Pennsylvania CBG festival. Amazing show man, love how you incorporate some educational stuff into our act, you had the crowd mesmerized all around. My dads been building for a couple years, i love playing em, and i'm about to try my first build(s), so thanks for the tips!

I built my first two CBG's for my granddaughters for Christmas and they turned out rather well for my first attempts. I had not discovered your your how to videos and had to correct mistakes and with some advise from a local luthier it all turned out well. I am now addicted to building and am very thankful that I discovered your how to vids . You ROCK Justin ! I've now just subscribed to your channel . Peace !

Thanks so much Justin and Bruce! I've had to learn these lessons the hard way with my first fret job being too off and then I took fret wire with the tang ground off and hair tied it to the neck and got it in tune, well sort of, but the crazy angles of each fret! I finally realized my nut was too high and that the bridge needed some angle, but in this video, and I'm so glad I watched it, you show how by lowering each wire at the nut you can get the first frets in tune! I'm super excited about this. Thanks so much. By the way, your viral video of you playing that shovel guitar got me started in this wonderful passion! Thanks again! Bart

Great video, my only issue is when you are numbering the strings. The string closest to the floor is the first string and then the second string would be the next one above it and so on. You seem to be counting from the bass string down, which can be confusing, especially to newbies. Thanks, I really dig your playing.

"I hope this was helpful" - Perfect! Thank you so much. This was one my concerns. I want to make a playable CGB! My 10 year old son is gifted and talented but doesn't think you can support a family as a musician. But he just can't resist anything I pick up and start playing - and he plays it all way better than I ever will (: He plays by ear but is also taking piano lessons to learn theory.

Great video, Question, I followed all your instructions but when checking intonation at the nut I fret the 1st fret it goes up a whole key like from E to F, any suggestions,I would appreciate your expert advise. Thank You, God Bless.
@justinjohnsonlive
@justinjohnsonlive 10 жыл бұрын
patrick west Great question. There are no sharps or flats between E & F or B & C. This makes things a little confusing, but thats just the way the tonal system is set up. Therefore, when you have an open E string, and you fret it on the first fret, the first fret note will be F, even though you have only moved the pitch up a half step. The same is the case for B & C. All other notes will become sharp if you move up one fret (e.g. F becomes F# - G becomes G# - A becomes A#) Hope that explains it, and thanks for watching!

I'm planning on making a set bridge (haven't figured out the plan exactly). I might put in a chrome hard tail. Can I keep it un-glued, set the intonation and then glue it when it's in the right place?
@justinjohnsonlive
@justinjohnsonlive 9 жыл бұрын
oldguitargal That is a good way of setting the intonation at the bridge, even if you are using a set bridge. Another way to make sure that you can assure accurate intonation on a set bridge is to use a bridge that has adjustable saddles. If you are looking for a great selection of 3- & 4-String bridges with adjustable saddles, check out MRWS Instruments. They are a great source for CBG parts, and are great people!

My first ever ukulele was a hand-me-down from the 70s and it's action was WILD. It had the worst intonation I've ever played with. Playing a D on a perfectly tuned C string came out something like 30 cents sharp. Horrible. I have a better one now.
