Im wondering why you went with DAD and not GDG like all the other cbg videos do? Not a criticism, just a question from a newbie. Wonderful video btw and looking forward to many more. Thank you so much for sharing!!

I have to add my praises of this TRUE raw beginner video. I learned more from it than any other "beginners" CBG video than any other. Just teaching that basic strum was worth so much.

Thanks for your praise Michael. I tried to remember back to when I started out to learn to play...and the basic knowledge that I needed to have in order to get going with it. I wish that I had somebody that was patient and someone who could teach me the process slowly...so that I could grasp hold of it. That is the formula that I have tried to adopt in order to help others get a nice sound out of the geetar after their first lesson or two. That early success is what excites people to want to learn more. I delighted that it has helped you to get going too . Cheers Gazza

Great video for a beginner. This has been a really good instruction lesson for an absolute beginner. I have watched many “beginners” videos that were too complex to follow. This video was the right amount of information at the right pace. I got it! I’ve even added my own variation. Every alternative slide I don’t include the lower D (thick) string. I strum the middle at high (thin) strings only. This give it a great variation. Can I play it perfectly - NO. But I’m now making a sound that sounds like something bluesy and that has got me going. Thank you VERY VERY much!

Nice, I was wondering why you picked DAD tuning?
@cigarboxgeetar9417
@cigarboxgeetar9417 10 ай бұрын
I vary my tunings between open D, E & G. Open D and E are good for another reason. I mostly use Open D & E because they have a great bluesy tone...and I can use it for accompanying myself when I am playing a 6 string guitar which I also tune to Open D & E. Open D and E are easier to play for me on the 6 stringers...because their fret patterns are the same as on a 3 string guitar. They are just an octave higher... on the other 3 strings. Cheers Gazza :)

@cigarboxgeetar9417
@cigarboxgeetar9417 Жыл бұрын
That;s a great question my friend. With cigarbox guitar...there are NO rules. You can play it behind your back whilst sitting on your head and plucking it with your little toe if you like to play it that way! I can play it ...with it sitting on my lap... and also in the conventional position. However...I prefer to play it lap style for several reasons. It feels much more comfortable playing in that position for me...I can see exactly what I am doing in terms of picking the strings and choosing the frets...I can use a hip flask slide ...my prefered slide these days(which I cannot use in the conventional position) ...I can slide right up to the full extent of the neck or even beyond...which I cannot do in the conventional position. It is entirely up to you my friend. Try both ways...and find out which works best for you.. Remember...there aint no rules! Cheers Gazza :)

Hi Craig. Sure you can and will! When I first started out trying to learn about 15 years ago...I was all fingers and thumbs. Absolutely hopeless at it. But being determined to learn it...I watched heaps of cbg videos and watched other players to pick up various tips. I figured that every day that I did not practice...was another day lost. I figured that you have to make a start sometime... you will never ever get there. We dont start out competentent. To get competent...you need to practice and make mistakes. Over time you will minimise those mistakes and eventually get competent.
@cigarboxgeetar9417
@cigarboxgeetar9417 Ай бұрын
I do not use my left hand fingers to play on the fretboard to play chords or individual notes as a conventional guitarist might. I play all of my chords and single notes with the slide. These days I usually put my slide on my pinky finger if I am playing the geetar in the conventional upright position. If I am playing the geetar on my lap...I put the slide on my second finger. Playing in the conventional upright position...a lot of guitarists put the slide on their pinky finger(little finger.) Many such as Justin Johnson and Seasick Steve put the slide on their ring finger( 3rd finger). John McNair of Red Dog Guitars sometimes plays with the slide on his second finger. Dave Hole...rock guiiarist and blues legend puts the slide on his index finger. It reall comes down to what works best for you. There are NO rules when it comes to cigar box guitar playin. :)

Hello, and thank you for this video! I just purchased my first CBG and I really enjoy the natural blues sounds that come from it, even when just playing the strings open. This is a really good starting point to get strumming down and learn a couple of other little "tricks", such as when you mentioned adding the vibrato. The other "trick" I noticed is how you changed it up a little with your pull-offs from the 5th fret to the 3rd fret, changing the sound from just sliding back and forth to adding an extra beat, if you will. Very nice! New subscriber here, going to check out your other CBG videos!
