This song is a 3 listen minimum: First listen - get a feel for the song. Second listen - bring up the painting & the lyrics and marvel at Freddie's ability to work all the different characters in the painting into the song. Third listen - max the bass & min the treble & listen to a whole different melody under the song by John Deacon. Of course there are many more focused listens to enjoy, but these 1st 3 are a must & change the way you hear the song on every future listen. 😁

If someone asked me to choose a song that highlights John Deacon's mad skills, I'd tell them to start here. His bassline drives this tune. All hell is breaking out around him (I loved your fireworks allusion) as he very melodically powers through. Freddie describes the scenery while Deacon is driving the car.

I love this song so much that I had to buy a print of Richard Dadd's painting, that painting is so intricate, it's amazing just like Freddie's song.

Same with me. What an intricate painting

@@dianecourtney2724 Yes it's amazing, and if you really study it you see all kinds things in that painting, several faces and tiny figures.

I am glad you liked it. It was a very creative piece and if you see the painting you would fully understand the lyrics. Queen were more rock oriented in the early 70's and then got more radio friendly after about the third album.

Loving this trip through Queens back catalogue. This was the 4th LP i ever owned back in 1980, i had no idea about the songs going in, having only heard singles and A Night At The Opera, was blown away. Looking forward to you discovering more

This could have been a Sparks song. But very cool. It's hard to think of many people making music like this at the time, outside of film and theatrical composers.

Love this song! Every time I listen to it, I imagine Freddie studying the Dadd painting displayed at Tate Britain Museum! The lyrics are clever & insightful! The description of the nymph in yellow reminds me of Freddie .. yellow is his favorite color. 💛💛💛

Your doing a great job of telling us the background story of each song. It's making me to listen a lot closer to the songs still this is an awesome album.

Love your description of the sound being fireworks. To me, this song is a precursor in style to Death on Two Legs. Though that song, rocks, much, much much harder.

Well my copy of Queen II back in the day didn't have one. The only one that a had anything in it was the "Jazz" album with the trifold poster of dozens of naked woman on bicycles. Oh safety first they were wearing helmets and bike shoes.

As a Rush and Queen fan I agree with you, Queen I is a better album than Rush I. Queen had 5-6 good albums in a row, but as I told you Queen’s music gets boring later in their career, Roger is sleeping behind the drum kit, Brians guitar sounds the same all the time…
