About the fantasy themes: As a kid Freddie made up fantasy stories about a fairyland called Rhye to entertain his younger sister. He used those childhood memories as an inspiration for several of the songs on the first 3 albums. But the next song "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke" is *not* one of those. It's actually the description of a painting by Richard Dadd in London's Tate Gallery.

Don’t think Queen had ‘descriptions’ such as thrash in their heads when they created their music. I think they just created music as they felt at the time. If you want to try to figure out What they were thinking you need to consider the era they were writing these songs in…… Queen was not thinking ‘ thrash or metal’. They were just doing their thing. They were first for the bands who copied them for years after and when you are first in your creation you will be criticized constantly. Re the beautiful cover Queen was first with an album cover like this… and again copied in various ways. Queen may not have been the first to make a song video but they were the first to make a video everyone will remember that never ages in rock videos and literally made MTV Bohemian Rhapsody

I guess this is 1974 thrash before it was even considered thrash or even metal for that fact, it didn't exist it was just rock music to the mainstream, it doesn't matter it is still better than the shite they release today the ikea music

Fellers masterstroke and Nevermore are very integrated . Masterstroke flows beautifully into Nevermore and they are both very short so i would take them in one reaction. Looking forward! :)

One of Queens best songs...Queen II is maybe their best album...March of the Black Queen or Father to Son...

I went to many Queen concerts when they were starting their popularity with the US after the single Killer Queen and before Bohemian Rhapsody….Queen couldn’t duplicate what they did on vinyl of course with all the dubbing and so many musical and vocals tracks on their albums….even later on with Bohemian they used recorded vocal tracks for the Momma Mia part of the song….

One of my favorite queen songs.

Not thrash. Maybe thrash for that time period. The next song is a description of a painting, so he takes us out of the fantasy land of Rhye. The March of the Black Queen is the one I am really waiting for though.

Yeah, I don't get thrash vibes either. Still, this one went down better with Justin than I thought it might!

You need to see it live, the version live at the Hammersmith Odoen 1975 is great! Thrash did not start off as Slayer, this was before metal even existed as a genre. Megadeath actually used some of this riff in one of their own songs. I would say this was more like power metal and it was done before Rainbow unleased power metal onto the world. Freddie sings the highest notes in this song C6, not Roger as the deception says.

John's bass really shines in the live version... LOVE IT!

To my knowledge, this is the first of this style of cover that emulates a 1930's pose of actress Marlene Dietrich. Shot by rock photographer, Mick Rock. He also did their Sheer Heart Attack cover along with other photo sessions.

This tune I remember....More trad metal ahead of it's time (with a touch of prog)...Priest was really the Metal band incorporating "chugging" power chords characteristic of thrash at that time. I'm sure there were lesser known bands using this technique as well. Always amazed at the wealth of info. in the comments!

Hi great reaction! Love your honesty. Think you gonna like the next 3 songs. Very melodic and creative. Would be great if you did Live at the Rainbow, after the Sheer heart attack album. To fully grasp and appreciate early Queen .

Yes! Live at the Rainbow. Ogre Battle is a must-see live.

One of my favorite songs to listen to! Between the lyrics & my vivid imagination, its quite the Ogre Battle 🧌🧌🧌 I can’t wait for you to do The Fairy Fellers Masterstroke, written by Freddie describing a painting by English artist Richard Dadd, who painted it while incarcerated for murdering his father. 😳😬

Queen was unique, no other band could replicate all the genres Queen did, other bands didn't have the courage to do it even if they could.

I would call Queen progressive... but defenatly unlike Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin.

Thrash ? Would not have even come into anyone's minds, in my view a modern term. If we want to go down this route Deep Purples Burn album 1974 was more thrash 😂 and we can't forget Rush's first album 😂😂 🤘🤘👍

I don't know if it is trash or not, but actual riff is very trashy and is more wild and heavy than other of that time.

With songs like this, I don't really get how one person "wrote" it.... How did Freddie "write" this by himself?
@bluebell3720 Жыл бұрын
I dont understand why you think he didn't He composed it on guitar as well unusual for Freddie

Very interesting song, I do like it but it took a couple of listens for me to embrace it. Thrash didn't exist yet so I can get where someone called it thrash.

I don't know enough about thrash to even compare it. Outside of I don't like thrash I'd say is the biggest reason why.
