I saw Kim 5 times. Never saw Max which I regret. But I saw Kim New Years eve in Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto and they played this. Like 14000 ppl there. When it got to "Here's Lucy...", 14000 ppl spoke the whole set of words in perfect unison. Every single word. Simply one of the most incredible concert moments of my life.

I'm glad you liked them. A cool Max Webster feature to do might be their moon songs. The first 4 albums all have a song on them with "moon" in the title. They're all pretty hard rockers, except "Moon Voices" which is a proggy instrumental.

I've been following them since the 70s and I would say they ended from lack of record company support for them to do a headlining tour. They had this imsge as "Rush's little brother" because of their close relationship, and were on the ssme label, and I think the label was more interested in promoting Rush.Terry Watkinson quit before the "Uniersal Juveniles" tour, so Kim did that tour with a band of hired guns. I heard him say he folded up the Max tent after opening a show for Rush in K.C. (or somewhere like that) on the "Moving Pictures" tour. Max Webster didn't so much break up as die a slow death from neglect.

Check out Astonish Me, Let Go of the Line for two great Terry Watkinson mostly written songs. You are right he is an amazing key player like Jon Lord was with Deep Purple. The keys with Kim's amazing guitar work top notch. Actually bass and drummer were great too. Terry Brown fingers all over Max sound arrangements early on.

Kim's solo stuff was far more radio orientated. Some was quite good but way more mainstream. Bills have to be paid. MW really was Zappa Canadian but more accessible to your average listener imo. An amazing band that never got their due even though RUSH was a big supporter and took them on many tours. To me their stuff is an amazing fusion of prog/rock/pop/ that is miles above your ordinary fare.

One thing I really love about Max Webster’s music is the production, it has this quiet quality to the mix, not sure how else to put but it’s like relaxing almost. Though it was hard edge music for sure. I think most 70s mixes were like that,

That additional claim on the jacket about featuring Kim was only the subsequent releases. Maybe to boost sleeper sales? Not sure. As for the band, it seems like they imploded after Terry Watkinson left, which was 1979. I think the bassist quit as well, my guess is that they were still struggling financially and the pressure to continue became too much. But they still had a great album left in them, 'Universal Juveniles' released in 1980, was a heavier stadium rock sound and it did very well in fact. They were JUST starting to break into America and the UK with a little help from Rush, who had Max Webster open for them on their 1980 tour, when for personal reasons, Kim suddenly had to stop. Rumors of a nervous breakdown, or some private trauma seemed to be the official reasons. About four years later Kim reappeared with his debut solo album which was actually not bad. Us Max fans were not deterred, it was definitely 80s production, the songs were catchy, but there were more than a few winks and nods to the old 'Max-machine' on the album. With each release, it seemed like Kim lost his way somewhat, it was slick musicianship and slick production but to me it had too much of that 'hair and spandex' vibe for me. It is hard to please both musicians and college football fans at the same time, Lol. We ALL miss Max...

I went to a small bar in the east burbs of Toronto (Scarborough), in December 2011, where an un-named band was playing for $10 cover. Ended up being another Canadian Icon Frank Soda on guitar, with Mike Tilka on bass and Terry Watkinson on keys. Phenomenal evening. Lots of Rock bar band fave tunes / mostly 70's, with some Max Webster. Frank Soda is a better singer and equally talented on guitar as Kim Mitchell. It was like being at a Max Webster show.

I believe someone explained the issues with Max Webster in a comment. The record label wasn't being helpful to the band and Kim Mitchell was the last one to leave out of the original members. He had a much more successful solo career and became popular so the record company started to put his name on the Max Webster albums . I am pretty sure that is what the other person said.

Kim Mitchell solo stuff is more mainstream but he did some Max Webster type songs as a solo artist like a song I Am A Wild Party for example. It was a combination of feeling like the label wasn't supporting them, and burnout coupled with the fact that they were not breaking through in the US. The album covers did not originally have featuring Kim Mitchell on them. These albums were re-released under a new record label and at that time they put that on there because Kim Mitchell had had some success so they were hoping to draw additional sales from the Kim Mitchell audience or the fact that he was a known entity

FUN FACT - On Rush's Spirit of Radio, the crowd you hear cheering after the lyrics "Concert Halls" was recorded during a Max Webster concert. While producing Spirit of Radio, Terry brown got in contact with the Webster camp asking if they had a recording of a crowd he could borrow. This came right out of a Kim Mitchell interview he did about 8 years ago. You know though, Webster's last album before they broke up (A Million Vacations) is the least exciting of all their albums, so the band might have run it's course soon after if they'd stayed together anyways. Webster was a very niche prog rock/pop band, where Kim's solo carreer aimed at a much broaded audience. I think he made the right move as in the early 80's the music scene was changing and prog rock wasn't a big thing any more.

Love Max. I’m sure it’s been stated here, Max just didn’t make it. In the 70s Canadian bands had to break it in the US to make it. Rush supported Max for many years but the odds were against them. April Wine is another AMAZING Canadian band that couldn’t break it in the US but would have been huge if they’d could. Triumph did make it in the US and sold 10 million records but back then the deck was stacked against Canadian bands.

Just looked it up. Max Webster sold a total of 350,000 records total across their whole catalogue. All in Canada. That was not nearly enough to sustain them. And I’m sure that number was a lot less while they were still active.
