As a RUSH fan I stumbled across Max Webster when they supported RUSH during the Moving Pictures tour. They were very good in London that night....I bought their "million vacations " album the next day.....hey it is brilliant. Kim Mitchell's guitar work is awesome, cuts like a hot knife through butter. Check out "Paradise skies " and "Charmounian" from it. I'm sure you'd love them.

Hey Brother, glad you liked this track. Back when Rush was touring the Moving Pictures album, Max Webster was the opening act. The last song before changeover was Battle Scars. Geddy came out to sing wearing a Richard Nixon mask. And Neil was playing undercover during the song as well. Dave Myles played the opening bass lick at the beginning of the song. I don't think Alex played it live on stage, as I never saw him. Now changing directions here, you should put this album on your list to react to. There are a number of Max Webster albums, but this one was by far the most commercially successful. This was one of those albums that was good from start to finish. Pye Dubois who helped Neil write Tom Sawyer, was also the principal lyricist for Max Webster. Kim Mitchell the guitar player on the front of the album went on to have a solo career. And I would suggest doing some reactions to his material as well. If you want some suggestions, leave me a note in the comments. Max Webster and Kim Mitchell are some of my favorite Canadian artists. But when it comes to rock music, the Canadians got it going on. I can give you a whole list of artists to check out. Some that you even know. But until then, rock on brother! 🇺🇲🇨🇦

Hey Justin, great choice. Max was a great band. They opened for Rush at my first Rush show 5/22/77 in Port Huron, Mi, which is across the river from Kim Mitchell’s Sarnia, ON hometown. “Oh War”, was the last song Max did in their set, and Geddy and Al (Dirk and Lerxt to their friends) came out with hoods over their heads, and jammed along with them. Neil was playing under his white sheet shrouded kit, and i was lucky enough to see him under there, being seated 2nd row, stage left. Was an epic night for me. We had earlier snuck in a back stage door, found our way to some out of the way seats , and watched their soundcheck, where they were writing “Free Will”! I was 16yo, we skipped school that day for a very memorable adventure!

So this was from Max Webster’s album Universal juveniles, with Gary McCracken on drums for Max, and of course Neil on drums for Rush. Awesome collaboration. And you can clearly make out who’s who. Max Webster was another fave band love there sound a bit more jazzy almost a Zappa thing going on in some of their music, but proud that they’re another great Canadian band, actually met Kim Mitchell at Steve’s Music in Toronto back in the 80s, really nice humble guy.

I saw Geddy join Kim Mitchell on NYE 1980 in Toronto for Battlescar. Max Webster broke up shortly after album release in 1980, as their music was not received too well in USA. Kim Mitchell then releases a solo EP in 1980, whuch was well received. Rush and Max Webster were label mates. I saw Max Webster open for Rush in Montreal 1977 Farewell To Kings Tour. Max Webster are legendary in Toronto, even 42 years after breaking up. I'll let everyone else comment their fave Max Webster tunes. Kim Mitchell has had many solo hits and still plays gigs. Kim's hits are "Rock and Roll Duty", "Go For Soda", "Rockland Wonderland", and "Patio Lanterns"

Thanks for getting to this one. I think it was a fun collaboration. Max Webster is a pretty good band in the 80's, and Kim Mitchell had a a pretty good solo career in the 80's. Pye Dubois, bassist for Max Webster, collaborated with Neil on writing a few songs, most notably Tom Sawyer. Its fun to pick out the parts that Geddy, Alex, and Neil are playing. It sounds 70's because, both bands started in the 70's (also it was just 1980, barely out of the 70's).

Max Webster played Maple Leaf Gardens on New Year's Eve after the album came out and Rush joined them on stage to perform the song live! As far as I know it was the only live performance with both bands. Max (and later Kim Mitchell solo) would play it themselves all the time. Recently Alex played the song with Kim Mitchell's band on stage at some event. It doesn't seem that they video taped the studio recording. That would have been epic!

Such a great song and such a fun time. Two of Canada's best rock bands, all buddies, hopping in to the studio together to lay this down live (I think it was the second take!). And the classic Pye Dubois lyrical twists that made his stuff so great (he was the lyricist for Max and credited on some of Rush's biggest tracks, including Tom Sawyer. I always thought he made Neil better). The two bands would do a regular New Years Eve show at Maple Leaf Gardens and I'm pretty sure they busted this out there. Max has a lot of great tracks and are very interesting (some strong Zappa influence along with more straight forward rock as well as some prog). You can listen to their top songs to get a flavour, but my favourite deep deep cut is Beyond the Moon which is pretty epic and is an incredible late night headphone listen.

Not only both bands on the same song, they did it LIVE AND IN ONE TAKE! The reason it sounds so 70's is because this album was released in late 1980, and Max had been playing it live for years. Because Max and RUSH toured together for so long, the latter knew the song well, and at some point, Geddy suggested that they record it together.

Dude, pleaaase! Although Battle Scar was a collaboration between Max Webster and Rush, the predominant vibe is definitely a Max Webster sound and vibe. A little back ground. No one in the band was named Max Webster, that was just the name of the band. The lead singer was Kim Mitchell, who is a kick ass guitarrist and singer front man. He left Max Webster to pursue a solo career simply as Kim Mitchell. He teamed up with Peter Frenette, who is a kick ass bass player, vocalist and song writer (Kim's right hand man) and together they wrote many Canadian rock anthems through the 80's and 90's... really cool party music. You should definitely check them out some time. Sadly, they never broke in the US market. But, yeah... if I was to bet on it, I'd say Max Webster had more input on the composition of Battle Scar than Rush did... I'm going strictly by sound, vibes, and song composition style... it's just more of a Kim Mitchell style sound.

Max Webster was a GREAT band and toured with Rush a lot. Sadly, they never achieved much commercial success beyond the local scene. They are also from Toronto. This album Universal Juveniles was an AMAZING album but sadly Max's last. The lead singer and guitar player Kim Mitchell went on to a decent solo career and still tours today. Max is also a bit of a rabbit hole band. Many songs deserving of classic status had they only achieved the success I feel they deserved. Also important to note, Pye Dubois was the lyricist for Max Webster. He didn't play any music. Just wrote lyrics. He collaborated with Neil on Tom Sawyer and lyrics to a few other songs...Some great Max songs to check out: The Party, Hangover, Paradise Skies...

This is a cool song. It was released in 1980 but I first heard it sometime in the late 90’s once the internet was invented. Lol. By that time Max Webster had broken up. They only did 5 or 6 albums between 1976 and 1982. They did tour with Rush quite a bit back then but by the time I first saw Rush in 1983, Max Webster were no more. It was cool hearing a Rush collaboration with another band. But to be honest the song didn’t grab me enough for me to want to hear more Max Webster. And at the time I was more interested in bands that were still together and producing new material. Apparently they only achieved any significant success within Canada. Martin Popoff (Rush biographer) and KZbinr does speak very highly of them. I really should check them out.

I have a kick ass stereo system in my car (factory stereo too!) and I'll crank this up roll down the windows and roll back the sunroof and let the 21 speakers do their thing! Windows down or up, I get a lot of looks (glares).

I know it's not but I always regarded this as a Moving Pictures lost track. Maybe recorded in the same studio. Recoded it off the radio and it live on cassette for the longest time... then CD... the iPod classic. Now I can stream it as well as many other cool Max W tunes.

There's something very Spinal Tap about that opening. I'm guessing the love for this song is mostly from old Rush fans who were around in the early days and miss that hard rocking 70's sound. But yeah, Geddy delivers the goods, that's for sure.

Moving Pictures tour. 1981 Indy. Battle Scar was Max Webster’s encore song. As the music kicked off, Geddy slowly sauntered on stage wearing a rubber rubber mask, and kept it on for the whole song. Probably so as not to steal the show from Kim Mitchell. The crowd went nuts over that.

Hi Justin. Great reaction again. Have you checked out Triumph? Another Canadian trio who rode on the coattails of Rush. Check out Lay it on the Line or Just a Game.

As Kim has pointed out before, this is Rush playing with Max Webster, not Max Webster playing with Rush. What a thunderbolt...
