You can argue who the greatest drummer was but nobody puts on a more entertaining solo than the professor. 😊

The beginning part of the trumpet section is him using triggers on pads and his feet just like he did in his other solo...it's all him starting from here 9:25 to 9:55, then the main song starts. He also adds a few more horns here and there throughout the song. My favorite trumpet sound is this one! 9:53

You have just witness greatness. This song was constructed while the recording of Snakes and Arrows, Geddy just got a Jaco Pastorius fretless bass and was just playing it with no amps during a session, when the producer started to record what Geddy was playing and they came up with the song. Awesome way of making a song. As for the Jazz part of the solo, it was very creative. Very musical. Neil did a production called Burning for Buddy, (a tribute to Big Band/Jazz Legend Drummer Buddy Rich) and really got into Jazz/Big Band music and he took the last section of his solo from a Count Basie toon and added the sampling to his triggers and electronics. This was an awesome bass part. simple in a way but none the less great. The trade off from Geddy to Neil was cool. Almost like YYZ just a little different.

Malignant Narcissism is an instrumental track on Snakes and Arrows album. They just tacked Neil’s solo on the end of it. They vary how they work the solos in from tour to tour. Thanks for this one!

Yes, the horn hits before big band track are triggered by Neil. There’s a cool video made by his drum tech Lorne “Gump” Wheaton explaining how he has to manually change the patches for all of the sounds used during the solos live during the solo. While Neil is playing one part of the solo, Lorne is busy making sure the correct trigger patches for the next section are ready to go. Incredible blend of talent and technology.

It's a trip how this instrumental came about. Geddy was playing around in studio with a new fretless bass and the producer heard it and started recording it. He then asked Geddy if they've ever had two instrumentals on an album? At that time the majority of their equipment as well as Alex were not in studio. So Neil played this on a "warm up" 5 piece and Geddy played on that fretless bass, and Alex put his parts in later. The name of the song came from the fact that the album now had two instrumentals and how they felt it was narcissistic to have two, but how how quickly the idea spread. Take care ✌
@bobcarn
@bobcarn 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to get technical, the album has three instrumentals, the last one being Alex's "Hope" solo. After hearing "Hope", I thought "They should do more like that. Let each of them have a little solo spot." I would've loved to hear a new percussion solo routine and recorded in the studio. Why have drum solos only during live shows?

@@rickhaddad7261 And it's such a beautiful piece! I loved that his solo during that tour was just the extended acoustic version of it. @@rickhaddad7261 I like other bands that make industrial, alternative music. It's like that. It's dark alternative, ambient, industrial... maybe even a bit of electronic pop. So yeah, it's very different. But the songs are very well written and performed. They're good, just... they're a very different genre. "Western Sunset" is the odd one of the bunch, being a straightforward acoustic number. I'm happy with the album, but then again, I like classical music, alt, pop, hip-hop.... you get the idea.

Incredible performances every time. “In eight years I’ll be seventy one, I can play Charlie Watts drum parts when I’m seventy one, I can’t play Neil Peart’s drum parts when I’m seventy one” - Neil Peart at sixty three.

I think 'Malignant Narcissism' is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the soloing, highlighting what Neil can accomplish on his own. The most jazz-influenced I've ever heard Peart. Effing cool. Love Geddy's wall of what looks like rotisserie chicken as opposed to the wall of washing machines/laundry I've seen previously. Funny, brilliant buncha F-ing Canucks, hometown boys. Rest in Peace and Powerful Percussion, Professor.

Found this interesting tidbit on Songfacts: Rush found inspiration for the title of the song in the lines from the Trey Parker and Matt Stone film Team America: World Police. In that film, the psychological term malignant narcissism is used in reference to Kim Jong-II. In this instrumental song, the only voice heard is from a clip taken from Team America. It appears at 1:08 in the song, and features a female voice saying, "Usually a case of malignant narcissism is brought on during childhood."
@CygnusKC
@CygnusKC 2 жыл бұрын
I've known this fact for quite some time (I LOVE the movie "Team America".) It cracks me up when I tell other Rush fans this that never made the connection. Then, they usually recall that there is a Parker-Stone-Rush friendship (see also the Lil' Rush Tom Sawyer concert intro featuring South Park kids) and that jibes pretty well with the band's notoriously goofy sense of humor.

Neal had MIDI triggers on his acoustic kit, which get turned on when he rotates back to that kit. At first, his playing triggers "hits", then he triggers the swing-jazz finale. He used that method starting with the Vapor Trails tour with the composed solo titled "La Baterista" ("the Drummer" in Spanish), then each following tour had a composed solo ending with the "hits" followed by the swing finale.

Those who had/have been critical of The Professor's playing have said or written that Neil is "too perfect." Granted, Mr Peart was like a machine. Also remember that he was 6'4" so he was a big dude. And in this video he was 54 or 55! From time to time, I rewatch the drum solo from Frankfurt during the 30th anniversary tour. And I was lucky enough to see that tour when Rush stopped in Milwaukee. On the album its a couple minutes. Created from some bits Geddy was playing for distraction, kinda adlib. I think whole album's one of their best. Armor and Sword, The Way The Wind Blows, Main Monkey Business, Workin Them Angels, Far Cry, worth a listen, eventually, as you roll along. If you want to return to earlier, "basic" Rush, Bastille Day, In The End, Passage to Bangkok, Lessons, Working Man, Anthem, might reorient u back to start. For what it's worth I think Malignant N.. is a raw rock blast. Be well...Peace.

Thats your opinion. Also i think Rush is awesome. When I’m listening to any music thats new to me, especially like this, im listening with a critical ear. Cause thats how you get good. Thats how you find out what you like and what you dont like, and most importantly, why.

You don’t understand big band jazz…that’s his trade mark….he’s a fan of big band percussion … he was the leader of the BUDDY RICH BIG BAND…this was the NEIL break!! If you knew how much he studied BUDDY, GENE, THE COUNT AND LOUIE then you would understand. It’s a RUSH FANS FAVORITE!! Also, he’s able to play match and traditional in one sitting. We miss the PROFESSOR….he was the backbone of RUSH!! We miss you in T-TOWN 🇨🇦 It seems you’re not a RUSH FAN and you’re making a comparison that big band isn’t your thing…which is fine. To each there own!! But, why even waste your time when you basically stated….if there’s no lyrics, it’s not for you to understand!! That seems to be a narrow view of music….again, I’m Canadian and this is the rock group of CANADA 🇨🇦

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!??? When did I say if there's no lyrics it's not for me..WHEN did I say that? I literally studied jazz (big band is included in this) at college. If you look on my Community Posts I'm spinning jazz records regularly. You are making shit up. I have become a Rush fan. I've been a jazz fan. I'd say I have anything but a narrow view of music, with how much I've studied and how much I've performed in numerous styles.
