As a drummer myself, Neil is the reason i play music....hes even the reason i play guitar. Its hard to watch neil play anymore for me. I lost the musician i looked up to the most...BUT was left with his inspiration when he passed. I can never repay this band and this man in particular..

My FAVORITE Neil Peart DRUM SOLO (and that's saying a lot), and it boils down to you can tell that NEIL IS ENJOYING HIMSELF! He didn't where his PLEASURE on his sleeve, so that is AWESOME to me! Also... Yes, Alex was using FEEDBACK! By the way, it was the Beatles that first used FEEDBACK on the intro of their song 'I Feel Fine' fact!

If you’ve seen the documentaries, one of them goes into detail about this song being the product of a jam Geddy was doing in the studio, but he didn’t know Nick (their producer) was listening and recording. There was already two instrumentals on the Snakes and Arrows album, then this came along and there was three. They agreed to lay it down as a song, but Neil’s kit had already been shipped out of the studio. The only kit remaining was a small practice kit (4 or 5 piece). It’s absolute wizardry that they miced up that kit to sound like some massive drum set. This is the guys being the guys - indulgent, slightly goofy, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. ✌🏻

The other key part was, Geddy had just received a Jack fretless bass and was "messing around with it." The basic track was recorded as noted above, then Alex came in and added the guitar part. Geddy and Neil were, at the core, a PHENOMENAL rhythm section!

The lighting effects Rush used specifically for this song were incredible. Rush was the first band in history to win an award for stage lighting for "Appearance of lights in motion", without any lights actually in motion. They accomplished this by using multiple rows of parallel lights then simply alternating even and odd numbered lights.

Probably my favorite professor solo, even more than the Frankfurt solo. A long time ago, I went to a Kiss concert as a punky 6 yr old and walked out a total Rush freak. 17 concerts later (yes, i didnt see them as much as i would have liked but i was military for many years and didn't have a choice) yessss... that was Alex using feedback with his tube amps, yes that was Geddy using a fretless base and yes that is why I love musicians that try new things. Neil had just finished studying with Freddie Gruber used what he learned to make this solo. Never stop learning, never stop growing!!! And music is a language all understand.

Rush did very few interviews during their first 10 years of existence. Finally heard one on late night radio in 1984 with Geddy. He was asked what the band’s secret to their compatibility and longevity was. He said, “We never had a tie vote”.

IIRC, it was also never a vote that went 2 to 1. They always did things unanimously. And while Alex didn't like the idea of adding keyboards, he realized that it was important to experiment with the new sound. And admitted that it made him play better and differently as the guitar needed to find a way to be heard over the keyboard. And in later years, Geddy said something like "If I never had to play keyboards again that would be fine with me."

The studio version of this on the Snakes and Arrows album is only 2 minutes and 17 seconds. They definitely all turn this into something special! I saw that Test for Echo tour in Tampa Fl! 1997-98! They also played the complete 2112 on that tour! Also first time I saw them do 'An Eveing with RUSH' were they played for 3hrs. with an intermission! Fun times!😊 If you want to see another bad ass Neil Peart drum solo. I LOVE the way you fell in love with RUSH! I've watched several of your RUSH reaction videos and this is another great one! My wife and I used to see them every time they came to Dallas and we have always loved them (studio and live). This is a good one from the Senior edition of Rush. Best Rush is between Permanent waves (1980) and Power windows (1985). 5 consecutive records of absolute perfection. Any song from those studio albums is phenomenal! Lyrically some of Neil's absolute best drum work and lyrics. Geddy and Alex get super creative with their instruments, sound and arrangements. All 3 are at their best. Rush in their prime playing some of the most creative music of the 80's.

One of the reasons Neil has so many drums is so that he can have a lot of different pitches to work with. All those toms have individual pitches from high to low. And where basically every other drummer plays rhythmically... he plays melodically... having pitch and rhythm just like a guitar or bass.

This was my son's first Rush concert. We saw them at Red Rocks in Colorado. At the time, he was into Metallica, Pantera and the like... and he was 16 at the time. Yeah, his reaction was similar to yours. When Neil broke into the big band sound, he screamed 'This guy can't be freaking real'... 3 people around him screamed ' We know!'😀 Rush fans😅 From that evening on, I seemed to have 'misplaced' my Rush cassettes 😜 Yes, percussion has a voice, and it's the voice of the Professor. Interesting little tidbit, for those who like Rush tidbits....watch Geddy....he's playing a Jaco Pistorius fretless Fender Jazz bass. VERY cool.

Hey pretty redhead! Refer someone who's never heard Neil to the drum solo performed in Frankfurt, Germany in 2004. Many believe that one is his best solo. He's a little younger in that one, and the energy he was able to muster shows. He literally tears up the acoustic side of the kit - it's mind-blowing! FYI-so you'll be more impressed! When he starts the big band jazz part of the solo, ALL the horns you hear were triggered by him. He either hits a small trigger pad of which there are many hidden throughout the kit, OR he triggers the noise with his left foot. Sometimes the electronic cymbals trigger the sounds (horns), or he uses the big, electronic xylophone-mirimba device to trigger the noise. Eventually the big band music is a backing track that he initiates with the xylophone, but the first 45 seconds, or so, of the horns are triggered by him. When you remember he's playing the drums, AND triggering the horn noises at the right time without it perceptively affecting the drum playing it becomes even more mind-blowing! At least it is to me. There's a joke about Neil. "What do musicians use to keep time? Answer - A Metronome. Ok, then what does a metronome use to keep time? Answer - Neil Peart Actually, Peart had an uncanny sense of time. Even though he didn't graduate from high school, he said a lot of the time he would think about mathematical equations, specifically differential equations (part of Calculus) while he played. He had the ability to move in and out of odd time signatures smoothly. Someone said he was able to make odd time signatures "danceable"! All 3 members of Rush multitask with Geddy Lee being the most obvious as he sings, plays the bass guitar, AND plays keyboards (synthesizers). Neil Peart is triggering a LOT of sounds in many, many Rush songs and the audience has no clue because he was so damned good at hiding it. I've rambled on enough. I'm enjoying your Rush reactions-keep it up!

My favourite part of his drum section was the really nice music he was playing on those bars that look like a xylophone. Leif and Geddy were great too. The title reminded me of a poem that I wrote when I was a teenager that had the words, 'malignant trifle' in it. It was about a little girl who had lost her life due to an apathetic world.

I think the most amazing thing is that is played as it was written, there may be changes as the song evolves, an A# instead of a B here or something to that effect but I'd say that when I saw him play this in Austin it was 98% the exact same song as when he played it in Chicago or where ever. Neil Peart of Rush at the time borrowed the phrase "Malignant Narcissism" from the comedy movie "Team America World Police" by Matt Stone who also created the comedy TV show "South Park" - they were friends and Neil Peart asked Matt Stone if he could use the phrase for the title of a Rush song - I think that's how the story goes - if you notice jazz drummers Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were in the video on the screen during the drum solo - Neil Peart was inspired to start playing drums because of Gene Krupa.

Yes, Alex was using feedback ala Hendrix, whilst bending the strings(both with just his fingers and the whammy bar). They are poking fun at themselves with this just before they lay down the law as being the greatest band of all time and space! I love how you fully embrace every nuance of their music. You remind me of myself when I was discovering their greatness. Only I was doing so with guitar in hand trying to figure out just what the hell was going on musically, and emotionally without breaking my brain. But I could never make I look as good as you do. As for Neil's drumming, just when I thought he couldn't top himself, it was like he could read my thoughts (it's a short subject so no challenge there), and respond with "challenge accepted".

Alex uses feedback like Hendrix more than you might think. That's why he has amps on his side of the stage still, even though Geddy started using the modern direct feed to the sound engineer. That's also the reason they put strange, interesting and funny things on Geddy's side of the stage to keep the stage scene "balanced."

Good guess! Yes, that's FEEDBACK, baby! Not note bending or such. Matter of fact, check out their album Feedback, cover songs they did when first starting out. You seem to like that 'over-under' switching deal Neil loves to show off with, cool! He was CERTAINLY THE GREATEST, EVER! Rotating drum riser, unique & too cool also! That allows him to put either of the three 'sets' of drums facing towards the audience, mind you, to have proper manners. BTW, I like when you get so excited you get 'the vapors' and have to fan yourself & also like it when you're bouncing up & down with excitement in your seat while listening to the tunes is just lovely too, Red! I would like to point out that I have seen a lot people react to Rush videos, and some are ok, and a few are really, really good. I definitely have my favorite ones. What I appreciate about Neil, is that he can switch from style to style. In that rendition that he did, he must have switched between maybe seven or eight different styles of drumming. There may be other drummers out there that are better than him, possibly, but no other drummer can switch with the proficiency and the expertise as Neil......and still keep true to its intrinsic source of value for that type of music genre.

I get the drums speaking to you as you put it. As a kid I would always use the term "he brings life to the kit". There are lots of great drummers out there but Neil's drums really do have a sound like no other.

I got to thinking about you earlier today. You have fallen in love with Rush and I dig seeing how it moves you on so many levels. Then I think about you listening through headphones and not a big stereo with a subwoofer so you can feel the music physically as well. And I got to wondering if you have ever thought of putting a "Buttkicker" on your throne? I believe it would take music to a different level of enjoyment. I am really enjoying your diving into Rush!!!

This was basically a newer rendention of the R30 drum solo some things where the same but there was some very new drum fills different from R30 solo, but both are a masterpiece.

The first part of the electric drum kit part of the solo is a variation of part of the Frankfurt solo.

Hi there! Really enjoying your dive into RUSH. Been a fan since I was a teen. I was lucky enough to attend several of their concerts...right up to the end. No better band out there, really. The quality and expectations they had for their music created 3 virtuoso musicians. I would suggest you check out their "band solo" entitled Where's my thing, Here it is..." There is a live version, and it is amazing.

Neil does a jazz tribute with drum solo to Buddy RIch in a video he is a lot younger and plays a drum kit 1/3 the size.

First - amazing reaction. I didn't think tyou were going to be able to make it to the end without passing out from the sheer power of the music. Second - A rush story, from far longer in the past than I want to admit to. Back in the day Rush was the favorite pissing post for critics - they just didn't like them. I once read - but have not verified - that one review (from Rolling Stone?) for an early album (Permanant Waves?) read something like "Just Rush showing off again." That's it. One line. That review came immediately to mind when I read the title, since I am sure that crititc would have loved to have used the words against them. Thanks for the reaction. Hope you had a nice cold shower afterward ;^)
