I saw Triumph in 1985 for the 'Thunder Seven' tour in Jacksonville. It was a GA concert and I was (again!) pressed up against the stage in the center. Wow! What a great show!! Oh, and Eddie Money opened!!

There was a moment when "who's your favorite Canadian power trio?" was a fair question... Mostly when Rush was doing Workin Man. Not so much after 2112 came out.

They have positive lyrics which was different for a hard rock band at the time but that's what I like about it.

Attended the "US" Festival as in "you and I." 330K plus attendance for Metal/Hard Rock Day. What a party! Organized by Steve Wozniak and Bill Graham, attendees were parking on the freeway due to the congestion moving toward Glen Helen Park in San Bernardino, CA. Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Triumph, Ozzy, J. Priest, Scorpions and Van Halen. I've seen Triumph many times; never a bad show. Rik is one of the most underrated musicians of his time. Van Halen's 1.5 Million payday was unheard of for 83,' and caused a rift with The Clash.

And van Halen wasn't even that good that day. Drunk and sloppy. Triumph and Judas priest were the tightest of the day imo

Keep going man. They have so many songs. Rik Emmett has a classical guitar interlude on every album which is cool. A lot of deep tracks that are epic. Ordinary Man, Cool Down, Just a Game to name a few. They rode on the coattails of Rush but managed to be one of the biggest acts in the early to mid eighties. Criminally underrated.

Yeah, I don’t hear The Police at all. Great song, though. These guys were a cool band to see back then when they performed as a trio. If you want a really good compressor pedal, the Union Tube & Transistor LAB pedal is based off of the LA 3. You might want to check it out.

These guys were great. Rik Emmitt the lead singer and lead guitarist is a painter also. The drummer sings lead on a few of their songs. Another power trio from Canada. This performance is incredible worth watching the entire performance.

I liked these guys when I first heard them in the early 80's. When you heard them on the radio the easiest comparisons were bands like Styx and Night Ranger, but they clearly were trying to bring a bit more prog to their sound. It was just unfortunate for a 3-piece rock band from Canada to come along when Rush were peaking. But there's no denying Rik Emmett's talent. I was also at this US Festival but I don't remember seeing these guys. The group I was with tended to sleep in and then party a bit before heading to see the last few bands of the day. We were mainly there for Day 3 (even though Bowie made everyone wait til 11:30 PM in the freezing cold ("Hey, can we burn that?" "I don't know -- let's try!" 😄))

Emmett is a lefty. He said that's why he can bend notes so far. What a jam! The 6 string sounds like the Ibanez I had at the time (Musician) but my pickups weren't as hot. I think the 'holes' make people think of the Police. Emmett can switch between necks and lead and rhythm so smoothly.

Thanks for spending the time, Justin. The police influence I hear in the verse chording with that phat 12 string. I appreciate the details shared about the equipment as well. I'm now down to an EBS compressor and Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI V2 Pedal or the Geddy Lee model. That runs DI but I split to a Tech21 powered speaker as the backline

Good one! Rik Emmett's vocals are insane! My favourite from this concert is Lay it on the Line. Rik's effortless vocals are 🤯 As someone else has mentioned their label really screwed them around wanting them to do more commercial radio hits not which lead to them disbanding.

Saw this tour just a few weeks after this performance. It was in Eugene Oregon at Autzen Stadium and Triumph stole the show. But what a show the lineup: Quiet Riot opened, then Night Ranger, Joan Jett, Triumph and Loverboy headlined. Greg Kihn band was supposed to be there but they canceled an Quiet Riot took there place. Great show and Triumph was freeakin’ incredible.

In the end, the issue with Triumph was the interference from the label. You can hear the influence as you go through their catalogue. Rik Emmett talked about this multiple times, how it finally led to the breakup of the band. He just felt that they were not able to do THEIR songs, THEIR way. The push for commercial success, billboard hits, started to override all else. That said, Rik had an amazing voice and generally all three were good musicians. Always put on a fantastic show.

I've read the same. MCA thought Emmett was an incredible talent (correct) that they wanted to pump out top-10 hits and multi-platinum albums a-la Journey (not correct - Triumph was never going to be that). After the success of 2112, Rush's label pretty much left them alone and distributed what the band gave them, happy to take pretty good financial returns for minimal on-going investment. Triumph was never afforded that luxury. I wonder what Thunder Seven, Sport of Kings, and Surveillance would have sounded like if the band had been left to their own devices. And if MCA would have figured out that they could make a pretty good financial return on single-platinum albums if they'd just left them alone.

Yeah, Triumph was great and Rik Emmett is a beast...similar band to Rush in many ways...Canadians, three members, bass player also plays keyboards, higher pitched vocals, drummer uses big set. Definitely more straightforward rock oriented musically than what Rush was doing.
