So here's my question. Apple and Avid both derived their premium codec from the same FREE source. Both come from the same DCT based codec scheme. Apple of course did what Apple does and locked theirs down to Final Cut Pro only for years (even excluding their own Final Cut Express), while Avid made DNxHD free to anyone and everyone. So why aren't Blackmagic putting DNxHR into every camera? It works the same, it cuts the same, and as a bonus, it doesn't have the stupid gamma shift ProRes does when going between Mac and PC. DNxHR will drop into any editor that accepts ProRes, even Final Cut. It can carry the same metadata, have the same bit rates, have the same bit depths. At hand off you can even tell your clients it's ProRes by another name if that makes it easier for them. I can't think of a single reason why that codec isn't in every camera and recording device that offers ProRes or would LIKE to offer ProRes but can't. I kind of panned the Pyxis when it was announced because it felt half baked to me and didn't have some things I really wanted. I've started to warm to it a bit in the past month because I have an upcoming project in early 2025 that it would be good for. We'll see. The codec isn't that big a deal to me because I do all narrative work and would be shooting RAW anyway. But the lack of interchangeable mounts is a REAL bummer for me. I WANT those locking mounts but if I get the L-Mount I lose them. It seems like the simplest of things. I don't care about internal NDs, I can even get around the silly 1 XLR input ON THE FRONT. I don't want a flippy screen but would have preferred the screen be on the 1AC side and not next to my ear when I'm on shoulder rig. The battery choice is also silly. An interchangeable V-Mount, Gold Mount, or B-Mount plate would have been trivial to do and would solve a lot of problems. But anyway, we'll see how the camera is received. Hopefully, they sell well.

Hey! Thats a really good point about the DNxHR…maybe they will do that. Someone said there’s rumours about the codec thing is whats slowing down the delivery 🤷🏼♂️

Patrick was very smart because he just said he didn’t have to change his way of working then he said he could use it instead of a DOP viewfinder. He didn’t actually review the camera at all - it was a paid endorsement, as simple as that. He is back on You Tube because it’s doing well financially too. The guy has an impressive amount of output. I downloaded those clips and found the colours to be the same as previous BRAW footage and not, in my opinion, anywhere near the level of Arri. I don’t know about the true DR of the camera either - I do know those clips weren’t easy to grade, but that’s mostly because it’s really hard to choose the right CST, which is because there are way too many options with BM. I ended up doing a grade in ACES. I agree we need to see the night-time BRAW clip too.

By the way, Patrick’s current You Tube material is recycling his Patreon material from years back in condensed form, with a new little intro, so it’s not new material, just a new income stream. Nothing wrong with it - but it is what it is.

On top you get the worlds best all in one Post software Resolve Studio with the camera for free! The complaining about BM Raw is pointless, everyone who buys this camera wants the shoot Raw and understands the ratios and more than likely uses Resolve anyway. L Mount lenses are incredible with more options becoming available by the day, including the new Sigma 28-105. RED is finally becoming redundant, they’ve lasted a lot longer than most predicted but their time is up. ARRI will need to innovate as will Sony if they want to keep their pricing high. Thanks for this, @JustinPhillip! It’ll be interesting to see what happens with BMD’s lineup. I bought a 6kFF when they were on sale (my first BM camera), and while I truly love the image quality, I’ve found on every paying job over the past 3+ months when I’ve tried to incorporate the 6kFF into the workflow, I’ve ended up using a C70 instead. Not b/c of image quality (though IMO the C70 is still excellent there), but b/c of the versatility. Codecs, internal NDs, batteries, etc, etc. The Pyxis solves the battery issue, but not the codecs or ND issues. I don’t know, we’ll have to see. I feel like with every camera they release, BMD gets closer and closer, but then they remove something: ProRes and/or a flippy screen. Ugh. I want them to succeed.

@ I’m not saying BRAW is a bad codec - quite the contrary, in fact. It’s excellent in Resolve. As an FX6 owner, to me the Pyxis is for a completely different user and application. To me, the FX6 is a great video camera that can kind of double for cinema type shooting but I think the color science and look aren't as good as Canon or BMD, especially skin tones, in general. With a lot of post work, the FX6 can be made to look like the Canon and BMD colors, but it's a PITA. I own three Canons and three Fujis and all six cameras have better SOOC colors and skin tones than my FX6. I have a production company and a live company so for live, the SOOC colors are important. The Pyxis is a cinema type camera that could be used as a video camera in a pinch but it lacks the convenience features (AF, E VND, H264 codecs, high ISO) that I would want/need for video camera type shooting. But if one edits in Resolve (I do), has or wants to buy cinema lenses and follow focus, and isn't put out by external ND filters, and knows how to light and lights their work, the Pyxis looks like a pretty cool camera for almost nothing and the new screen looks to up the game considerably. I think the camera will be a hit for BMD. It just all depends on the kinds of shoots you do and how you like to work. In the freelancer space, nobody is going to hire someone with a Pyxis, in LA it's all about the FX6/9. In the production company space or if you have higher end clients who want to shoot things cinema style, I could see the Pyxis becoming pretty desirable. And it'll obviously be the It girl for indie and low budget filmmakers and hobbyists as it's quite a step up from a mirrorless form factor, has SDI, mini XLR in, box format.

Let’s not forget that almost any camera if you light the scene properly does a pretty good job so it doesn’t really take an amazing camera to do a wonderful job if you can light things properly and again this is true just about any sin of a camera even a red a red is pretty awful and low light. It only works well when you light it properly and that’s what they intend. It’s a cinema camera they intend for you to be able to light the scene properly as you would as a professional crew and this new Black Magic camera is just the same, it’s not a gun like the FX three and to be honest it’s only got 13 stops of dynamic range. What competed with the OG pocket besides an actual cinema camera? 5D? Now every manufacturer has BM beat in their specs minus the RAW like codec. At least CDNG was real raw. Might not be necessary to shoot video that's supposed to just look like we'll shot video, but when you're trying to push a big Hollywood look on a microbudget, it can really help. Can't change the color temp of your practicals, and you can't afford the time or money to completely replace them, and can only supplement? The temp contrast between tungsten and daylight is too much. Real RAW helps with stuff like that. IDK what BM can do about real RAW, but if they could get a hold of a prosumer level sensor, it would be a game changer combined with their other tech. Right now, it's just lipstick on the pig. BM sold out. The move would cost them some of their earnings in the short run. I would say profit margins but common. A company like this will pass on every penny if they feel they can no longer go in the other direction of reducing the quality of their ingredients. Software, BRAW and a pretty half baked in look like the film lut, are like seasoning. They can only cheap out on the meat like a sensor so much. At some point I would prefer a quality sensor, that resolves a good image w/o fuss, where I can make it my own.

Pretty average stuff. Would like to see what a better black magicl advocate could do with it. John Brawley for instance.

I'm all blackmagic fan myself. But.... It has a huge problem. It's cheaply made with cheap china made components that breaks Ez... What happens when the side screen dosent work like the 4k-6k before it? I would never , ever trade the worry free of a Sony Venice or an Arri camera for some low budget camera. NEVER!
@JustinPhillip3 ай бұрын
You are not wrong about that! Definitely some concerns, but for a $3,000 price tag it makes sense. But maybe woulda been nice to see it like for 6 grand and have a more substantial build

I hear you. But how often does that happen with BM screens? not asking to undermine you, just genuinely curious. I've had 2 pocket 6ks and two pocket 4ks and they never gave me an issue. Of course, if you have Arri/Venice budget for work, well, no reason to look at a Pyxis anyhow I guess lol.

@@JustinPhillip Your thoughts on Red komodo X price cut? I believe it was a smart move.
@HowImaFan-eh3rc3 ай бұрын
You're right but I think this is on the market to compete with other cine cameras at that price point, like the Komodo, FX 6, Canon C400 etc. In no way would this replace a Arri or Sony Venice. Justin's point seems to be that if a guy with such a high level of expertise is getting behind it, it must be a good camera. But like all cameras they are tools, and I highly doubt he'll be giving up use of his Arri to use this camera full-time

You had me for a bit but then you made the comment about “old white men…” What does race have to do with Pro-Res? Stick to the topic at hand and people will respect you more vs using trending snooze induced language.

@@JustinPhillip not at all. I’m a black man who is also in the film industry and for a while now. The fact that you responded in that way is a little childish. I was not dogging your video hell like I said, you had me most of the way and I agree with you about it’s a bummer with pro-res but race has nothing to do with what the context of the video is. It’s low hanging fruit. Do better.

Blackmagic is awesome until you show up on set and it grenades itself and you look like a fool.
