I put all my items in zip lock bags with a one time use item number on the bags. That being said I have accidentally shipped just one piece when I had items listed as a group, so now I'm putting notes in the bag. I have three "ghost items" that I sold years ago that keep popping back up on Ebay as active items. I have resorted to increasing the prices to over 6 figures and changing the titles to "sold nolonger available". I still get questions from buyers about them!

On #17, I hear you. However, I look at it a little differently. I view my unlisted stock (I think “death pile” implies it’s something you will likely never list) as stockpiled fuel that I can “burn” to generate cash when I can/want/get-to-it. I have had periods of time where I find great stuff every day, and I’ve had stretches where I struggle to find more than a few decent things in a week. Having a stockpile allows me to always have inventory on hand to list. I don’t love that it’s not as organized as I’d like, but it’s not uncommon for me to be very glad I have excess stock to list.

As far as speaking with Ebay re a problem I have found approaching it as "Hi, I am very confused as to what I've done wrong" It takes the blame off of them as a business and puts it squarely on my shoulders making them much less defensive thus more open to helping you. Just a thought.

Pausing to comment on the tip about investing in lighting: YES YES YES !! I have a DSLR that can take high quality photos, but I don’t currently have good lighting. It wrecks my workflow because I have to work extra hard to tweak lighting for color and detail to come across accurately. I was a film major. No matter how good your camera is, if your lighting is crap, your output is generally crap.

Never call it a death pile. Instead, call it something like your sourcing inventory. Calling it a death pile reinforces that is where things are thrown to stay forever. Whereas if you think of it as your sourcing inventory, that implies it is worthwhile and once that thought transformation sinks in, your "death pile" will go away in more than one way. Remember, it is all about mindset.

regarding Tip #30 & late shipment rate, you are technically correct that a late scan does not necessarily mean your package will be marked as late, but there is another seller level metric called "Tracking uploaded on time & validated" that does require your item to be scanned within your handling time. When I first started selling on ebay I would just drop packages in the blue usps mailboxes & eventually learned this one the hard way haha. But super helpful video! Thanks for all your great content

Buying boxes (and reams of actual packing paper) was the biggest game changer for my store in 2024. I sell mostly hard goods so I need really sturdy boxes. I was spending too much time hunting for an appropriate box; now I just go to my shelves and pull out the right box which are sorted and stored by size and are easy to access.
@ChuckVanPeltАй бұрын
"Buying boxes is worth it." This 1000%. I used to be a committed box recycler. I spent some time examining the items I sell and determined the lowest number of box types that I can get away with. Now I purchase most of my boxes new and it has completely changed my shipping efficiency for the better. I can ship 5-6 items in standard new boxes in the same time it takes me to make a single "frankenbox". I'm not saying that I won't spend a little extra time to customize packaging for a fragile, expensive or large item, but for 95% of the things I sell, I use one of 4 standard package types and I sail through my shipping each day. And remember that boxes don't have to fit exactly. I find it better to put a few cents of void fill in a box rather than cut it down to fit the item tighter.

Ohhh yeah I’ve made several “Frankenboxes” myself!! They all have been enormous also (think 8ftx3ft), super time consuming.

I'm still a committed box recycler, though we do pick up new boxes in bulk off Marketplace all the time, because they're cheap or free. Sorry, one more, only partially agree w/ #25. I agree you don’t want to have a significantly lower price than other listings, but I almost always aim to be the lowest price listing - particularly if it’s something that might be treated like a commodity. If you have a hard to find collectible, def don’t be low price. If you have printer ink, or a sealed board game, or 100s of other things, I’d recommend being low, or at least at the low end. Everyone loves a good deal, and I want my stuff to move, so I’m going to forego the extra $6 in exchange for being the lowest price listing - or close to low - price. This is also allows me to pick up a lot of lower STR items. If I’m the low price on an item that only sells once per week, I’m likely only going to have to wait a week or 2 (or 3) for it to sell.
@Rapunzel122-s9wАй бұрын
It sounds like you are not aware that you are hurting other sellers by racing to the bottom with low prices and the brand is also affected by your low prices. I always try to be in the middle of high and low prices.

I agree with most of what you say. I’m going to use your videos to set up new sellers. I do have some disagreements though. Picture taking requires nothing more than natural light and your phone. If listing small items. Invest in a pack of colored cardboard to use as background. Also used boxes are a great way to cut costs. To keep regular sizes, pick a store and you will get average repetitive sizes. Like the dollar stores. Also used boxes are less likely to be stolen from porches.

Hahaha, we always buy more than we sell, but we have a warehouse. Since you have to be ready to buy at any time (hence always having cash on hand) we tend to seize opportunities as they come, even if our space starts to get overwhelmed. We do have warehouse sales from time to time to clear out a lot of things at once and sort of "reset". But at scale I think it is totally normal to buy more than you sell.

Great video Justin! That is a LOT of tips! I suggest resellers consider a few other factors when it comes to promoting a listing instead of say 2% across all listings. If there are say, only 5 others listed, does promoting yours really make a difference when the buyer can see all 5 of them without scrolling? Buyers can sort by many filters, and perhaps one of those existing filters brings your listing to the top without the fees of promotion, like "lowest price with shipping" which is one I use often. I also run sales often, which is another filter they can use, and may bring your listing closer to the top. I saw a listing promoted the other day and it was the ONLY one listed. Why bother promoting, really? I have also come to the conclusion that when checking STR and you go into "SOLDS", you'll notice "COMPLETED" also automatically enables as well. Completed sales aren't ALWAYS sold (as in, an auction that ends with no buyers), thus inflating what you THINK is the STR. Using Product Research (AKA Terapeake) may be more accurate. Thanks for all you do! ☺

For a period of a few months I was certain that a new phone or camera was what I needed in order to improve the quality of the dingy, yellow-tinged pics being showcased in my listings. But you said the fourth quarter of year sales pick up, I have failed to see that, although this is the first year I am trying to sell. My business plan is moderate as I am old retired. I track it on spreadsheets and am trained to use them. End the listings and drop it off at Goodwill. Keep a record of what you paid for it and talk to a CPA!

Thank you!

It happens when you purchase something and it shows are sales final. Like a yard sale or a liquidation store. So sometimes no returns scare off scammers

Scammers know how to work the system. A listing that doesn't offer refunds means nothing to them.

Great videos. Since you have a PO Box how do you handle UPS returns if they occur?

I'm not sure. I've never had a return come through UPS.

Bought flipwise. Loving the breakdown if tax time plays out good for me I’ll never let it lapse. But I’m curious if you’ve have used flipwise for receipts? I am not great with keeping receipts but majority of what I buy is cash marketplaces, yard sale ect. Plus couple thousand of my net sales were personal items from a couple years ago during the video game hype, so needless to say no receipts and now at a loss. Any pointers/advice for cash transaction tracking. I am pretty good at entering my purchases accurately but do I need proof for the tax man?

Keeping a record of your purchases (like logging the cost in Flipwise) in scenarios where receipts are not available should be fine and acts as a "receipt" but talk to a CPA to be sure!

I've enjoyed your channel and I have learned a lot. Thank you very much! I've sold on Ebay for 8 months and have done really well for a beginner. I only started so I could get rid of the Ebay inventory my sister had when she passed this year, but I'm hooked now. What should I do in this case? What would you do.? I sold an item and I was paid for it. I shipped it and the tracking states that an attempt was made to deliver. The next entry says "Held at post office at customer request" and has stayed that way for just over 1 month now. I've emailed buyer twice with no response, left a voicemail message once to the phone number listed on order. I'm ready to just leave it alone at this point, I tried. I just don't want to get a ding on my account for non-delivery later or would that happen?

This has been a big warning in various seller groups been in selling similar off other listings that aren't your own. If you look at your business polices it brings there's into yours & you will see pages of this if this is a normal practice. More importantly it can really mess you up with charging to much or worse not enough shipping on your listening. I would love to do this, and put this controversial point to rest, do you not find this to be the case in your own listing? Thank you really enjoy your videos.
