When I was 50 Roly and I bought a 2.5 acre small holding and left city work I had been raised on a farm and had a yearn to get back on the land We started a small but successful business growing herb and veg seedlings organically. Unfortunately Roly died 18 months after we moved so I carried on because I had bills to pay. My son moved back to help me after having a work accident and needing to sell his business. We were doing well and Rob was going to take over when I retired. A freak road accident cut his life short at 37 so I could not continue. I have moved into a tiny house built on my elder daughters 6.5 acres and planted a new orchard and have now got 250 square yards of Ruth Stout garden supplying three family with veg and soon fruit. I am 72 next birthday and wish I was starting over because Joe Salatin is a huge inspiration to me. I fully agree with his feed the world and care for the land and be self reliant.

Now we all need to support the young folks getting into true sustainable, regenerative methods of farming and life across the board. The government is not stupid, if they make it where both parents have to work in low income families that means they have no other simpler choice but to allow there kids to attend public schools. So collect welfare from the government and home school your kids or don't and have to let them attend public schools.

Hearing Joel Salatin talk about his father and grandfather wanting to be farmers reminds me of my dad. At one point my dad wanted to be a farmer, but just never had the opportunity or money to become one. Then later in life when we got the property where we life now, 3.75 acres, health issues prevented him from being able to do too much and also we did not have the money to start farming/homesteading. MY dad died this past August, almost 2 months ago. I had said about getting some chickens and he had thought that it was a good idea.

I have lost track of how many times I’ve watched this. I love his story and this is such a great interview and insight into how simple we could love and find so much joy and freedom from the things the world tells us is so important. I could absolutely get used to living like this. I’m in my backyard every day trying to make the most of my .25 acre corner lot and the process HAS to be affordable since we are barely getting by. Oh how I would love the start up money to be set up to produce 50% or more of my home’s own food. Going to the supermarket feels like window shopping.

I found this man’s book about four years into my seeking of a sustainable life. It’s been wonderful because I found it just as I was getting discouraged. Low and behold this man’s story has bolstered me especially during these tough times. This year we began processing our own rabbits and this morning I processed and prepared the hide of a rabbit we bred, and the little handsome bugger is beautiful. when I bought my place 13 years ago, it was covered in rock and cedar trees. We shredded down all the cedar, and started hauling leaves, bark, old hay and manure, spreading it over the pasture. Also threw out some native grass and pasture seed. We now have beautiful grass in the pasture. Still need to build up very clay and rocky soil, but it is slowly improving. Thank you for videos like this. They have been a big help!

Wonderful video! Our herd of 50 beef cattle rotate on our fields.We have rich hay to bale as a result. This year was almost 7,000 bales of premium hay. We are 4th generation New Hampshire farmers. Folks drive by and watch the process daily, but few want to farm. We sell hay mostly to neighbors who have cows, sheep and goats. It is a great lifestyle for the three of us. Our farm is 350 acres, protected by a land trust. We will all be " 70 something" next spring! I'm encouraged to see such a positive response from your viewers.I fondly remember Rodale's Organic Gardening & Farming magazine and Mother Earth News in the 60s & 70s. Helen & Scott Nearing and Elliot Coleman, who is still going strong in Maine.

I am not a farmer or homesteader but my grandpa was. I loved his stories of how they lived when he was a child and what they did to make things work, whether that is equipment, food growing, maintenance, etc. I am disabled from a spine/spinal cord injury nearly 9 years ago so am unable to really do any of these things, but I love to learn about it. I feel like it puts me back in touch with my grandparents and their simple, but healthy way of life. Just like Joel spoke about. I remember my grandpa talking about how little they had when he was a child and in the same breath saying how rich he was. It always confused me until one day I asked him and he told me the difference between being rich and being wealthy. Wealthy is having lots of money, rich is having what you need to get by comfortably and healthfully, even if you have to work hard for it. Listening to Joel talk about his dad and grandpa brought a tear to my eye. Even though I never actually had the experience of growing up on that land with either of them, I still felt a connection to how my grandpa spoke about his homestead. It's a beautiful thing. Justin, you and Rebekah are giving your children such a wonderful life. Sure the kids have toys, but I think I more often see them outside playing or helping you, than we ever see them inside with toys. They respect where their food comes from and that you both work so hard to make it happen. Jonah was such a great guy to take along on this trip to meet with Joel. You could tell he was just eating it all up. I know he will go on to take over your farm, along with whichever siblings want to stay, but I think you can rest assured that he will continue the legacy that both you and Rebekah are building. I Just have to say , Justin thank you for what you are doing, we have alot of shit happening in europe right now... but some people are trying to find solutions for all the poor people over here, and alot of people are working from paycheck to paycheck , with debt.. so we are starting farms with volunteers next year, for vegtables and eggs and other stuff, to give away 4 free to the needed , you gave me a different way of thinking , we know whats right or wrong , thank you Justin and God bless you and your family and farm... hope we get to meet in the near future , come to the farm tour in cali , or maybe visit your farm.. Dont know if anyone ever tells you, but your a great dad....i just watched your vidoe about the guy that wrote you asking how he could talk to his boys....being the dad to two boys myself, I understand, but your video moved me enough to drag out my tablet just to tell you that....so give yourself some credit for having such a great relationship with all your kids.....im not a farmed by any means....i really dont watch your videos for any farming knowledge...but more just because of your familiy dynamic....and you make good video's.....you have a very nice familiy.. First thing...plant fruit and nut trees, and berry bushes because they take several years to establish. 2nd get some egg laying chickens and start a garden (test the soil first so you know what amendments are needed, etc. Roots and Refuge is a great yt channel for gardening.

I am so thankful for these videos. I'm doing the best I can on a smaller scale until I get more land. Thank you for teaching this to people like me! I come from a long line of farmers but we didn't do it the way you do it. Now 8 raised beds and a small bed for my grandson are where we start :) Step up from the 2019 container garden that semi failed :) But you Justin will never know how much you and other homesteading channels have helped me. Prior to this year, my last container garden was in 2015 and although it was beautiful long about harvest time I needed to be with my parents for 6 weeks. I wouldn't trade that time. I didn't plant in 2016. Daddy passed October 18, 2016 and I couldn't even begin to think in terms of growing anything. This year I found you and your videos that led me to other homesteaders and the common thing was just do it. Just plant something. My summer garden was planted late and frankly "Bandit" the squirrel enjoyed the bounty more than we did. haha But my grandson saw a seed grow into food.. Now my Fall garden is planted I have microgreens and sprouts inside and I watch every video and read everything to help feed my family. We've built 4 raised beds so far we will add two more before winter and two more before spring. My goal is to turn most of the yard into food not just for my family but for hungry tummies that may pass by.. Thank you

I grew up in Minnesota. The people up north should have gotten to know more. I got used to the cold in the winters living in the Twin Cities. I experienced the longest time below zero (over a week). I'd be a wimp if I went back there. Whenever I say I wouldn't move back from Colorado, people always think it's because of the winters, NO!, it's because of the summers. People in Colorado are so wimpy because they are afraid of any temperature below 40 degrees. We used to love temperatures between 20 and 24, it was the best for skating!
