1. Encoding - Create integrated schemas of knowledge for mastery which leads to retention - Focus on the cognitive process of learning rather than physical action of ‘studying’ - Use multiple modalities of resources - (1) How does it connect to what I already know? What’s the bigger picture (2) Aim to simplify it - scaffolding (3) Learn in layers - start with what is easiest to you 2. Retrieval - High active effort => better learning - Free > Cued > Recognition - Practice how how you play - Spacing (1 day, 1 week, 1 month) - Flashcards can be limited by lower mastery - can lead to overwhelm, so it’s important to understand integrated concept first

Here are the main bullet points from the video: Most of what people know about learning is wrong or incomplete. A lot of research is not geared towards helping people learn better. The speaker has spent 13 years researching and trying to understand how to learn better. The speaker believes that difficulty in learning does not mean ineffectiveness. Flashcards can be helpful but they have limitations. Flashcards can be unsustainable and do not always address mastery. Many people rely too much on flash cards and do not use other methods. Flashcards can be helpful if used correctly. Retrieval practice is important for learning. Free recall is better than cued recall. Teaching to a 10-year-old is a great way to practice free recall. Procedural knowledge is not as important as declarative knowledge. Practice papers and exams can be helpful if they are geared towards the right type of knowledge. Summary notes are not as effective as other methods. Deep processing is important for learning. Mind maps can be helpful if used correctly. People who are willing to make mistakes learn faster. The speaker has a program that can help people learn better. I hope this is helpful!

Hi Mr. Sung! I really appreciate the sheer value that you are providing to all of us! I just want to quickly clear something up though. When I go through this trial-and-error process with my learning system (both encoding and retrieval), how can I know that I have made a mistake? Is it just through testing myself at the knowledge levels that I am attempting to encode at? Is it through the retrieval that I notice that mistakes have been made? In what form would that kind of feedback come? I@d love to hear what you think about that! Of course, if not then there is absolutely nothing to worry about! Have a great day, Sir!

Today i gave a medical subject exam which is an oral exam. I cram 300 pages for 3 weeks. On day of exam i was still studying because some topics looks new even if i went through it multiple times. I learned fast, if i read it or watch a video about it even once i understand it(self diagnose)but it remains in my memory for only 1 or 2 days. My learning speed is fast but memory power is bad. Help me😢

@lordzroger951 bro use active recall, like recall everything anytime for example I try to recall the concepts in my brain that I learn, when i go to bed, when I wake up, when I am playing sports or using phone, once you make habit of it you will never forget it

Just a suggestion, but for longer videos like these, it might be a good idea to sprinkle in some quiz questions on the material you talked about. Videos tend to be very passive learning, and I bet viewers would have better retention if the video included brief breaks to test viewers on the content that was already discussed.

Do encoding happens automatically i mean understanding the association with in the concept and apply it to real world scenerios Analysis , evaluate later Active recall Spaced revision Or do we do encoding using creativity like Internet meaning is interconnected global computer network system Do we imagine like globe with systems connected by a fibers or something??? Or just read the defination and active recall ????
