@@Johnmims65 Completely different laptops. You have to buy the Transcend if you want to do decent gaming (anything more than basic games like League). BTW, I've seen that video. Interesting it took that long for Microsoft to do that CASO update that basically increases performance without a MUX switch to the point it's almost exactly like using a MUX switch to switch directly to the dGPU.

Great shout-out to Jarrod's Tech! I'll also add that NotebookCheck had this to say regarding the MUX Switch. "MUX is not supported; the system can only switch between iGPU mode and Hybrid (Optimus) mode with no dGPU option. A reboot is required when switching between the two modes. HP says a MUX switch was considered but that the performance gain would be very minimal relative to the higher increase in power consumption. DirectX Cross Adapter Scan-Out (CASO) helps to increase performance in Optimus mode so that it could be closer to MUX mode." In my experience, HP seems to give price drops faster compared to ASUS, so I think it's definitely best to wait for a sale for the Omen Transcend 14.

In the UK the price difference vs the G14 is staggering considering the similar specs. On Currys UK: Transcend 14, Ultra 9, 32gb, 1tb, 4070 - £1799 ($2,312 USD) G14, 32gb, 1tb, 4070 - £2,399 ($3083 USD) Even if the G14 is better in some ways it's definitely not £600 ($771 USD) better. I think even people that massively favour the G14 will consider the HP at that price difference. Edit - it seems like the price on Currys UK was a really long multi-week sale soon after it launched, so if it's higher than £1799 currently, wait for it to drop again 👌

Having tried out both the Omen 14 and the new G14, G14 was the clear winner, though I liked the Omen more than I thought I would. It came down to better aesthetics, better performance, and also being a lot less buggy. Notably every time you go into eco mode on the Omen it switches to 24 hz with no option to keep it from doing this, so you basically have to manually change the refresh rate back to 120hz every time you unplug. I did like the quieter noise of the Omen, and the keyboard actually types pretty well, but the Omen branding and the gel RGB keycaps seemed much less stealthy and professional. 😮I’d say that the HP could become a better value if it were cheaper, but the G14 is clearly a tier above it, so not sure the same price point makes sense. Especially since the omen is like 20% slower with the same GPU. I suppose some people might prefer the Omen aesthetics, but I’d bet most mainstream buyers would find the G14 a little more premium feeling. Good job on HP for at least providing the G14 a competitor, but for my use case I am not seeing how the Omen would be better. Went with the G14 in the end, and haven’t looked back!

I'd love to see a more in-depth comparison with the G14 wrt noise and temperature. Apparently, you can completely disable the small third fan in the G14 through G-Helper to get rid of the high pitch noise. Furthermore, if the power in the GPU is throttled down to match the Transcend's, it might get better results using a custom fan profile.

Where did you see this? I'm interested. G14 seems perfect when fan noise can get solved.
@zzz-vd5rp
@zzz-vd5rp 5 ай бұрын
Only criticism for the vid is that there's no section where you test fan noise with the same power limit on the GPU. The transcend's 4060 maxes out at 65w so you should measure fan noise of the other laptops with GPU set to 65w limit too so that it'll be a fair comparison. It might not even be using the full 65w since usb C can only deliver so much power. When playing RDR2, my slim 5 14 draws about 50w GPU, 20w cpu on silent mode using usb c with c135 charger. There's low to medium fan noise in this scenario. In balanced/performance mode the GPU alone draws 70-100w of power and that increases fan noise significantly and it really loud. The lack of power limited noise comparison is skews the results towards transcend since its power limits are lower than slim 5 14 and g14. I'd really like to see y'all use MSI afterburner overlay/hwinfo64 when testing intensive workloads and games. This will show us how much power the hardware is actually using and what's the tradeoff in terms of noise levels. You can also use MSI afterburner to find the modes of the laptops tested to get similar power draw out of all the laptops so that noise testing is way more accurate.

In Germany we have a saying - weder Fisch noch Fleisch (neither fish nor meat). This laptop feels like that tbh. I'd either go for the Spectre 14 or if I need the GPU power for the G14 (the Blade is out for me due to the worse panel).

I'm also on the same boat with comfort (especially if this is something one will bring over to years of meetings. commute and travel) over performance (also because personally I have a desktop so I don't mind sacrificing performance because my need for a 14 inch gaming laptop is for productivity and games--handy when one teaches games classes btw--on the go) in choosing a laptop so I appreciate the extra tests that you all do. I have not seen a Windows laptop that has not had compromises so far this year, so if you are in the market then the title says it all, what compromises are acceptable? I am not a HP fan, but this has been my favourite take this year, for value mainly. Thanks Josh, this was a great review and the quality of these videos is really good compared to everyone else out there. Can I ask how this laptop compares to the 14 inch Lenovo Yoga (slim) Pro 9i from last year? I have the RTX 4060 version of that laptop which I bought based on your previous review and tbh it seems to be holding up v. well vs. the new HP and G14 laptops. In particular how is the fan noise at idle on the HP laptop compared to the Yoga Pro 9i? I don't mind fans coming on when doing high performance tasks but really don't like hearing fan noise when all I'm doing is browsing the web or watching videos.

Great review! FYI It's not quite right to say that one could run the screen at 24FPS for watching a movie. Film is generally 24 FPS, but the frames are interpolated together so they blend smoothly rather than each frame displaying discreetly like on a PC. So while the original film might be 24 FPS, the frame rate of the video file you are watching is going to be anywhere from 30 and 60.

The gaming on this thing you can clearly game at native resolution and catch higher FPS than other 14 inch laptops with similar specs and same price point when not on sale. I'm really torn. I have both the Transcend and G14. I love the ascetics of the Transcend. If it was $300 cheaper, it would be easier to not make a direct comparison with the G14. Honestly, I think I may like the Transcend better because of the black finish. Asus wants an extra $200 premium (if it was ever in stock) if you want the G14 in gray which feels criminal. I still have 45 days to return the Transcend, so I think I'm going to hold on to it and hope for a price drop. The other major problem for me with the Transcend is the speakers. Maybe they can be improve with some settings tuning, but it's hard to imagine that at the same price point there's such a large difference in audio quality.

@@bethelemmanuel6949 Doesn’t disturb me. But I easily get engrossed in work. Heat is there on back side if I run some complex ML models. Keyboard remains usable. Very smooth for light or medium usage. I have switched from MBA M1. Weaknesses 1. The lid is less stiff than i would have liked. 2. The track pad is good by laptop standards but could be better. 3. Keyboard backlights shine from under the key at certain angles but keyboard is good. 4. The screen shines, i have a window behind my back at office. But could not have asked for more at 752 dollars all inclusive, bought in Florida. Touchscreen is good and responsive. Haven’t used it with pen or other device.

This machine has a purpose. But it's not good at its intended purpose, which is gaming. I don't like the trend of having to intensely research how much power your expensive component is getting in order to determine if it is truly worth the price of that component. Why buy a 4070 running at 65w or whatever this runs at? Why not buy a 4060 laptop running at 100w, which will get better performance for a cheaper price? Is this THAT much thinner and quieter than a well-cooled 100w 4060 laptop? I'm not so sure about that. On the other hand, as far as the review itself, I appreciate the way, Josh, that you are working in the other staff so we get more used to them; they seem to be doing a pretty damn good job. Have a great weekend, JJ and team.

oh wow, i was really rooting for this laptop, was even considering buying it. The only tangible thing this laptop seems to be better in than the G14 is the fan noise and temps. But the pitfalls are too deep to ignore (on battery performance, optimisation, linux), so at the same price, it's really a no brainer that anyone would go for the G14. Also, been an HP user for the last 4yrs, and I haven't seen a worse fkng firmware for any laptop ever since :))
@regiesrules

Hey, I am relatively new to the whole vocabulary here, so what exactly do you mean by firmware? Is it the bios updates oder the hp apps to control the modes and settings of the laptop?
@moldytexas
@moldytexas 5 ай бұрын
@@regiesrules right so both actually, in a way. Bios updates haven't been as problematic, but among the biggest problems, my battery dies now and then. By dies, I mean it gets stuck at 100% (or some random %) with me having no idea what the charge state is, or whether it's charging or not. Because of this, I practically cannot use this laptop without the charger, sort of invalidating the point of a laptop. Then, HP's troubleshooting software has been terrible, not that even windows' work. But HP's is worse. There will also be some random ass glitches quite often, and restarting would be the only remedy. All in all, in about 4yrs of my ownership of this laptop, I'm actually fed up with all of these shenanigans, so much so that my next laptop will most likely not be a HP. Would be a pain to give up this beautiful keyboard (personal opinion), but let's see.
@regiesrules
@regiesrules 5 ай бұрын
@@moldytexasThank you for that answer. I can agree that some bugs and glitches seem to frequently occur with HP laptops as I have also owned a very mediocre old envy myself, but as of late I have upgraded to a new spectre for my work and until now it seems flawless, though as you have experienced it, there might come some unforseen problems in the future even though I hope not. What HP laptop do you currently own? The last omen transcend? At least that's what I am reading from your comment
@moldytexas

@@regiesrules yeah that's the reason why I mentioned firmware. Basically different classes of laptops have different qualities of firmware. Two of my work laptops also happen to be HP's, a ZBook and an Elitebook. Both are near perfect, with the ZBook having some issues considering it runs a proprietary Linux distro. My personal laptop is a Pavilion gaming 15 with a R5 4600H.

Is it a variable refresh screen though? As in, a screen that support changing the refresh in real time. Since it doesn't support g-sync, I think all of the messaging by HP surrounding VRR support has been very confusing and is just marketing gibberish for a display that switches between multiple set refresh rates

I think HP should have let the Omen have a higher peak power because it could have been more powerful in terms of its total graphical capabilities when you need it to be on the desk. I doubt anyone would be running graphic-intensive tasks on-the-go unless you have a very specific workflow, so the extra power would have been nice. Higher peak power, and an option to use it with less wattage in order to let it run cooler and quieter, but speculating why they chose to limit the GPU is unknown to me.
@lenlen9085
@lenlen9085 5 ай бұрын
having to guess, the problem lies in the charger. looks like they chose to ditch the proprietary port and psu brick in favor of a more universal, more portable usc-c power port. But usb-c delivering 140w is just not enough for laptops with dedicated gpu, unless you underpower it. for example if you take a lenovo legion slim 5 14” (whose 4060 gpu works up to 100W TGP with its 170W psu) and you try to power it through a 140W usb-c, its gpu power will peak only up to 55-65W, same as this HP unit
