Completely takes me back to Nov. of '83. I was a freshman & was high in school, versus in high school. I was to see this tour at the Spectrum in Philly soon after. But the tour got postponed by Trevor Rabin's spleen injury while swimming apparently.... the tour resumed & I did see them. The opening act was Bugs Bunny cartoons on a large screen. 2 episodes- when he is a bullfighter & the other was when he was with a mad scientist & a huge orange monster. When the house lights came back up ? The Spectrum was filled with pot smoke rising to the arena's ceiling.... the crowd laughed at that sight in unison. Never forget it.🚬😎

I can remember playing hockey in Toronto in this era. The only ice you could get was after midnight and my friends and I were in our early twenties playing against mostly guys in their thirties. I was a huge Yes Freak so this album became everything for a while. I remember one of the older guys coming into the dressing room with a 24 of beer singing the the chorus over and over. We skated them into the ice on most nights due to our young lungs but that night I remember passing to him a lot. Anyone who sings Yes to me is ok in my books. Oh and the beer was Molson Canadian so it doesn’t get much more Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1984 than this story......

He said yes hadn't made an album and he was tired of waiting so he and Allen White decided to start their own little band with an album of short songs instead of the long stuff they were doing. He found Trevor Rabin as guitarist and brought in Tony k and they had already started recording this album when Jon heard about it and called them and said he wanted to be a part of it. The chorus is generic...darn, and here I am, sitting here with goosebumps from it. I always found it uplifting, motivating, moving. But I guess...I guess I was wrong... No, no...I refuse to believe that. Don't be fooled by the surface level simplicity; It's one you gotta listen to with your "heart", not the analytical mind...you gotta let it flow...it's all about your latitude...give it time...let it flow...it can Happen to You...it can Happen to Me...It can Happen to everyone, eventually... :)
@unicyclepeon3 жыл бұрын
I agree.... I love this chorus. It gives me goosebumps too. Now I need to hear the whole album start to finish. :)
@joemaurone79233 жыл бұрын
Gotta add...the simplicity in the first appearance of the chorus sets up the intricacy of the chorus after the solo, where the voices start to weave around each other, where one person sings "it can happen" while another voice echoes it, setting up a neat pattern. And then the where the verse line starts to weave through the chorus part. So it does evolve.

When I first was hearing this song years ago, I felt the same way about the chorus. But rehearing it again now, I think the way it's sung makes it seem more like a declaration. Having it sung all on the same pitch gives it an emphasis, whereas making it more musical would have diminished that.

Just a bit of background on this, the band (without Jon Anderson) where even going to change the name of the band to Cinema. Playing 90125 to the record company, the record company felt that the album needed an additional vocalist. The lyrics had already been written by Trevor Rabin. It was discussed about asking Jon to come and sing on the album and ask him to rejoin the band. Chris invited Jon and Jon loved the songs. One technical problem was that some of the vocals were not in Jon's vocal range so it was agreed that Trevor should sing the parts of the songs that were out of Jon's vocal range. As soon as Jon agreed to rejoin the band it could not be called anything else but Yes.

I saw Yes on the 90125 Tour in Jacksonville in 1984. It was a GA concert. I got there before the doors opened and as soon as they did, I RAN to the stage and ended up stage right, right in front of Trevor Rabin (sigh... 💋). They played the entire album throughout the concert with the exception of "Our Song." As an avid Yes fan since 1974, I was in heaven! Oh, and Jon was sooooo cute! 💋 IDK why so many self proclaimed Yes fans don't like this album or it's predecessor, Drama (I also saw Yes for that tour in San Diego, 1980). This was only the third time I saw them (first was 1976 in Milwaukee). Always felt that way about the chorus, so...right on! Often had that same feeling about their song “On the Silent Wings of Freedom”...really good tune with lyrics that I find..lacking. Really looking forward to the Tales reviews. I would call Tales their most controversial work, but they’ve had so many of those that it’s tough to agree on which is the apex.

Hi Justin, this is the beginning of a more commercial phase of Yes, with shorter songs, and a consumption, let's say, more palatable, for a larger group of listeners. It is still a good album by them, to be honest, from the Drama album, the change had already started, but, in this line looking for a greater number of fans, this album is the beginning of everything. The progressive phase went to the album Going for the one. Strong hug to you, and see you next time.

This is a good song, made so much better by Trevor Horn's production.

I’ve learned over time that Trevor actually might be more involved in this album than Drama, even though he sang on all and wrote some of that album. This launched a whole decade of sound. It was literally the origin of the Art of Noise.

@@delllittle5692 Listen to the entire Welcome To The Pleasuredome album. It really is Trevor's album, not Frankie's.

@@CthulhuWaitsDreaming Yeah I remember when it came out that it really was an Trevor thing, I just didn't realize how much 90125 was more like the origin.

I agree with you, Justin, that the chorus goes on and on and on. Yeah, they change it up a bit, but I have a big problem with chorus' that go on and on and on (like Hey Jude, Layla, etc.). I'll go ahead and put in a Rec now for *I'm Running* on YES' Big Generator Album, the 2nd one they did with Trevor Rabin on lead guitar. IMO, *I'm Running* is the Best Thing they did with Trevor in the line up, so good it echoed the level of inspiration we saw back in the Close To The Edge days. Just saying...
