For alliteration give a listen to Helplessly Hoping. I saw CS&N several times over the years and they were just as on point live as in the studio. Being at a show with the audience singing along to 'Do-do-do..." was always a fun time. Then again a lot of their songs turned into sing-a-longs at their shows.

Good Morning Justin. There is a local band here who play this perfectly. This was written to Judy Collins. She is a singer/songwriter with a beautiful voice. CSNY Album Deja Vu is one of my fav albums.

How does this song make me feel? The music always made me feel good, especially at the end. But as many times as I've heard this song, a classic rock radio staple, I never paid much attention to the meaning of the lyrics. There's a lot of songs like that, for me, so many of these videos, despite having heard the song a million times, become "first reactions" in the process. This beats hearing it for the millionteenth time on the radio, a new layer is added.

Almost Cut my Hair ( extended version) CSNY . One of the seminal songs of the era! Today, with the anything goes lifestyles and fashion, it is instructive to take a listen to this song and contemplate what a big deal it was to grow one's hair as a male, and by the end of the 60's have long hair in the hippy-style. I love Crosby's singing with passion about almost cutting his hair and giving in to the "man".

Nash is the high voice. Listen to the rest of this brilliant album. Crosby and Nash play guitars mostly on their own tunes. Stills plays everything else (except maybe drums). They added Young to play guitar on their tour since they needed other musicians to play parts Stephen played on the album.

Yep, Stills was in a relationship with Judy Collins at this time, and Nash was involved with Joni Mitchell. He wrote "Our House" about about it. It was a typical southern California scene, with a lot of "cross pollination" going on between so many different artists and bands. So much fantastic music came out of this scene. It was a wonderful time to be alive. Hope you continue to explore CSN(Y). There's a lot to discover. Great reaction. I'm glad you didn't go too nuts on a musical analysis. For such a long tune, there really isn't much to pick apart, music-wise. Most of it is layed out for you right from the start. Each of the three (four) play guitar in concert. Often Nash and/or Crosby will just sing, whether lead or harmony. Nash also plays piano (check out "Cathedral").

I first heard this song at a Christmas party in 1970 with some school friends along with the rest of the album. I first heard Santana's Soul Sacrifice while passed out on the floor. We were taking turns squeezing each other while holding our breath until we passed out. Seemed like a good idea at the time. I met my future ex wife at that party. I saw Crosby, Nash and Raymond Pevar (Crosby's son) play in Nashville in the 90's. Bernie Leadon sat in on pedal steel for Teach Your Children. A song that is MY CS&N suggestion. Always a pleasure, still watching for I Cheat the Hangman, God Bless.

Ok - my No.1 fave song of all time. Stephen Stills plays just about everything on this track (actually, everything) and Nash & Crosby fill in the lush harmonies. Stills is a huge influence on me. When I was 15 I stated quite boldly that "I wanted to be able to sing and play like Stephen Stills" - now at 56 I can tell you honestly, that I have failed beautifully. Cheers.

Stills sings lead since it's his song, Nash sings the high parts and Crosby sings in between them, he can be hard to pick out in the harmonies but if he wasn't there you'd miss him. They're very different personalities from different parts of the globe: Stills was a military brat, born in Dallas, lived in Louisiana, Florida, Panama, Costa Rica. Nash is from Blackpool in England and Crosby is from California, his dad is an award winning cinematographer. Best CSNY song is 'Helpless' by Neil Young but 'Deja Vu' by Crosby is a close second, great feel to it.

Justin, CSN had three lead vocalists and since all 3 were gifted songwriters, whoever wrote the song would take lead vocals. CSN&Y were the same way with Young taking the lead on his songs. Stills did play almost all the instruments on this song as he did on most of this album. When Neil Young was added they had 2 great guitarists. As most would agree from begining to end this album is great, a classic. Their next studio album 1977's CSN is also worth checking out with 12 excellent songs including Just A Song Before I Go (Nash) that could be considered a hit and was played on the radio a lot.

Great! Thanks Justin, just what the doctor ordered. This is my favourite song of theirs. On the original double LP of the music from Woodstock there was just the end of de de de de... which was very frustrating to say the least. The picture on the album cover should have been CSN instead of NSC, when they saw it was wrong they went back the next day but that house was demolished so they used the photo anyway. Great review too!

The story is...(Graham) Nash had left the Hollies over their refusal to record his Marrakesh Express (later recorded by CS&N) and was visiting David Crosby at his home in Hawaii. He listened to Crosby and Stills working on the harmonies of a particular song that they were having trouble with. He suggested they go through it again and then a third time. And then, on the next take, he joined in with a high harmony that left them stunned. And thus, Crosby, Stills and Nash, with their distinctive harmonies, was born.

Yes, classic song, stunning harmonies. Those three guys coming together was very organic, all three very talented songwriters/musicians from their previous bands. Stills was the musical leader, on many songs he will play multiple instruments, even on songs that Crosby and Nash wrote. This album is mentioned as one of the benchmarks that spawned the early 70’s singer/songwriter and California rock scenes

As many have pointed out, written about and for Judy Collins. She had started seeing Stacy "Mike Hammer" Keach, and this was Stills' reaction. Gave me chills when I first heard those harmonies oh so many decades ago. Nash and Joni Mitchell's relationship spawned 'Our House', about their place in Laurel Canyon. In the documentary "Remember My Name", Crosby drives up to THE house and talks about this. There are also a couple of Laurel Canyon documentaries that fill in the back stories of these songs and the cross-pollination of the 'canyon' artists from Jackson Brown to Frank Zappa : "Laurel Canyon" ( a short documentary series) and "Echo in the Canyon". Highly recommend to understand how everyone was influencing everyone else.

Love this song. To answer your question they all played instruments (mainly guitar) at various points in the band, but on some songs (like this one) it was simplified to one guitarist. This song was written by Stephen Stills and he pretty much took the lead on it with the other guys singing harmony.

Great song. Great review. One of two songs I know off this album, the other being Marrakesh Express. I rode on the ME in 1974 but I was travelling in the opposite direction. Marrakesh was a magical place for a young guy off the prairies. Definitely a long way from Portage and Main (local reference for any locals who are reading). I hope life is treating you at least as well as could be expected.

David Crosby and Graham Nash both played acoustic guitar too and sometimes piano, but Stephen Stills was by far the strongest player amongst them, so he usually played most of the instruments on their studio work.

Both this and Carry On were written by Steven Stills. His is the lead vocal. They switched that up. Usually whoever wrote the song took the lead vocal. Other good songs of theirs written by others are Wooden Ships, Teach Your Children, Almost Cut My Hair, Long Time Gone and Our House. All great stuff.

It’s fitting that you mention perfect Sunday afternoon music. On our classic rock station Here in Toronto we had , up until recently, what was known as Psychedelic Sunday. Every Sunday. I think from 10am -6pm. This kind of music would be played. Basically all the music you review. Every Sunday all day literally for decades. Greatest samba ending ever - nice soothing happy song. Interesting that it's about Stephen Stills' breakup with Judy Collins, who has big blue eyes. The previous year, David Crosby produced the first album by Joni Mitchell, and afterwards, Graham Nash had a love affair with Joni. Then they broke up, and Nash released an entire solo album of breakup songs - Songs For Beginners. I really like "I Used To Be A King", which has lots of references to Graham's feelings about Joni "There's Only One" is another personal favorite.

I was in primary school when this came out but I loved it when I discovered them in my early teens; I still love them. Their voices sound so good together and even better when Neil Young joined them. The music is kept simple, partly because there was a limited array of possible sounds available I think. It all emphasizes the attention to their singing. There’s a ton of songs to choose from for eventual reactions. Just look at a live concert for well known and loved songs.

Musically speaking, they all played guitar, with Stills, and later Young, doing the primary leads. Nash also plays a lot of keys. As far as harmonies go, Nash is the high harmony, Stills in the middle and Crosby on the bottom. Each member writes and sings lead on their own songs, such as Nash on Marrakesh Express, and Crosby on Guinevere, and so on. Once you get around to investigating their side projects and solo efforts, which I highly recommend, you will get a better feel for it. There was no lead singer, so to speak, they all sang lead, often on the same song. Absolute virtuosos each! Please do yourself a favor and listen thoroughly, and intently, to the entire Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Deva Vu, Four Way Street (Live) and CSN albums. There are later albums, and all have their moments, but this core work is among the best music recorded, in my opinion! CSN(Y) music is like your favorite old sweater, comfortable, warm, familiar, and never lets you down! PS: you should also check out Judy Collins! You will understand the "chestnut brown canary" and "ruby throated sparrow" lyrics a lot better. Beautiful, powerful, voice! Interestingly, Stills and Collins have recorded and album together (2018 I think) actually played some limited tour dates.

Justin, Classical music? I noticed Beethoven's 5th has been reacted to (1st movement); definitely a great one. A suggestion. Brahms Symphony no. 1 (1st movement). Besides that it's another great Symphony, there's a great story behind it. Brahms grew up in the overwhelming shadow of Beethoven's shadow. He was terrified to put out his 1st Symphony. I think it took him 20 years. It was definitely at least 10 years. He did well. Ludwig would have been proud. Good review here of the CSN song. Back when Classic Rock radio was a thing... I think every single song on this album got fairly regular airplay. Some, like this one, got heavy heavy rotation.

Next to The Beach Boys, "CSN and sometimes Y" (Crosby Stills Nash and Neil Young), have some of the best harmonies ever. Mostly just great vocals, and acoustic guitar, these guys were the group that you could say was "unplugged" before Mtv made it cool.

Harmonies everlasting. This would be a good album to do just as you’ve been doing Prog or Bowie. Song just makes you feel good even though it’s a breakup song. The music and vocals from CSN and later CSNY are timeless. 👍

Please react to "Lady Of The Island" or "Guinnevere" from this same album. "Lady..." is mostly a solo performance by Nash, with some improvised wordless singing from Crosby. The lyrics are self explanatory and might make some people blush a bit but by no means are they rude.

Excellent review as always JP. It is a classic and so musically pure. This is an "off the wall" suggestion: Consider reviewing Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention live tour de force: Billy the Mountain (Just Another Band of LA LP). It includes a parody of this piece. Caution though plenty of x-rated lyrics.

Stills played the vast majority of the instruments on the first album (Crosby and Nash contributed somewhat more to their own songs but Stills really dominates in more ways than one) to the point that Crosby later accused him of treating him and Nash as his backing singers rather than bandmates (these guys loved to fight about everything and nothing) - it's one of the reasons they added Young to the lineup as Stills couldn't do it all live! Carry On was also almost all Stills, but most of the rest of Deja Vu (and their later output) had more of a band feel with other musicians brought in.

Try something from Crosby's solo album, If Only I Could Remember My Name; or Stills' Manassas. These guys all made lots of good music in various configurations.

Yo can start with opener Out of the Blue. Or you can play the duo Chance Meeting-Both ends Burning. OR lastly you can listen to the MO0NSTER 101/2 minutes blockbuster If There was Something.
