Absolutely love this song, and was thrilled you reacted to it. What makes this song so great for me is the specificity of the details combined with the vagueness of the story. The first line of the song perfectly sets up a foreboding situation, but we're left to guess what's going on - all we learn about our narrator is that he's young, alone, scared, and ultimately desperate. He's also faced with a critical decision. All of which makes him completely relatable even as we're guessing about the big picture. Musically, I appreciated your comments about the "folk" elements of this as well...It does share the story telling aspect of folk music as well as a pretty simple chord progression, but the tasty riffs and solos make it feel like an anthem of sorts. Got to see him perform this live with Crazy Horse, and it turned into a 20-minute jam (as most songs performed with them do) - completely unexpected and completely perfect.

Perfect song. The time and place, the meaning of events described in the lyrics, have always been enigmatic to me, and I'm happy for them to remain that way. The song still carries a weight of emotional power. Neil Young has often been criticised by more technically minded guitar players for the relative crudity of his approach. Somehow they overlook his mastery of tone, phrasing and melody. As with much of his music with Crazy Horse, it all feels loose, but still intuitively and effortlessly together.

One of Neils greats. “Powderfinger” is an inscrutable rock & roll koan: a song sung by a dead man, but full of life and longing. The narrator, just turned 22, was leaving boyhood behind by defending his family's land against a gunboat coming up the river. The day he became an adult, however, was also the day he died.

Yes, it's a challenge sometimes to keep an open mind to some of the stuff he reacts to that I did not know before. However, discovering something new (to me) through his reactions, is a huge part of what makes this sharing of music so enjoyable and satisfying!

According to a friend who has worked for and with Neil over fifty years told me it's a movie, though it never came to be. Also, Neil wrote this song for Lynyrd Skynrd to record, they never got the chance. I wish they had, but I can only imagine how their guitarists would have played it. They would have done it justice, because Neil and Ronnie were good friends and unlike the misconception the song gave fans. Ronnie put in his will to be buried in a Neil Young shirt t shirt

I was 22 and about to graduate from college when this song came out. I had no idea what was next in my life. So the line "I just turned twenty-two/ I was wondering what to do" really resonated with me. Although for me it wasn't, of course, a life or death situation.

You still haven't exposed yourself to the hard-rocking side of Neil Young yet, which as a Led Zeppelin fan I've always been fond of. I'll recommend again the triplet of *Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River,* & *Cowgirl In The Sand* off of Neil's second album, "Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere." IMO, they are both examples of his hard-rocking edge as well as 3 of the best he's ever written. Your eyes will be opened! :)

Great song, off of the album that turned me from Neil Young respecter to Neil Young fan. The names of the characters in this song scream "hillbilly" but the river gunboat always made me think of Vietnam. It seems like the nature of the conflict is deliberately enigmatic to prevent you from taking a "tidy", distanced, political view of the story.

Wow, no matter what happens the rest of the day, nothing can go wrong now. This is precisely why this is my favorite reaction channel. You interact with your listeners and do the songs they suggest, beyond the top half dozen most requested mega-hits. This song has been one of my favorites for over 40 years, but it is not widely known outside of Neil Young's most dedicated fans. Thank you, first of all, for choosing to react to this song, and secondly, for the brilliant reaction and analysis. As for the context, I always pictured a family of moonshiners somewhere along the Mississippi being visited by a ship full of federal marshals, but that's just my interpretation. In any event, have a great day and a great weekend. The entire album, Rust Never Sleeps, is worthy of reactions. Side 1 is acoustic, side 2 is electric. Pick any track. Maybe "Sedan Delivery" next?

Thanks for reacting to this long-time favorite, Justin. I had an interesting epiphany of sorts, expressed in a reply to Music Droog, that I won't restate here. Just wanted to say thanks and recommend that almost everything from Neil's '70s - early '80s albums is well worth exploring. A controversial take is that Tonight's The Night could be his strongest work, despite (or due to?) the raw, drunken pain that it seems the producer didn't even attempt to polish. It is a compelling experience that wraps exquisitely beautiful music in an unnervingly rough package.

I would 100% recommend this whole album for a reaction, (not that you don't have enough on your plate already.) As for the back story, I've always thought it was about the Vietnam War just reset in rural America to make it relatable. It doesn't really matter, though. Good fiction is as true as real life.

Neil Young has been writing and playing great songs since the very early 1960's, and he continues to this day. He and his band Crazy Horse released a new album called "Barn" late last year. This audio was from his concert film "Rust Never Sleeps". This film is Neil and Crazy Horse at their absolute peak. You get Neil solo on acoustic guitar, piano, harmonica and after five or six songs and a short set-up break, Neil Young on electric guitar with Frank "Pancho" Sampedro, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina, who make up the band Crazy Horse. There are audio snippets from the movie "Woodstock" and The Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" throughout. I think you will enjoy it. Maybe do a reaction to the whole film?

It seems to be the story of a young man defending his property, probably Civil War era. This is one of my favorite NY songs. How about checking out some more Linda Ronstadt music. She’s stunningly talented and has a forty year catalogue to explore. 🌺✌️

If you'd like to hear a 'folkier' version of this song, Cowboy Junkies did a very pretty cover. Come to think of it, I don't remeber you doing any Cowboy Junkies reviews. They are worth a listen.

In the world of storyteller songs, this one is superb! The blending of skillfully crafted lyrics with Neil's powerful guitar and the perfect backup group in Crazy Horse make this a spectacular tune for me. To the best of my knowledge, Neil has never specified a historical reference for this but it matches up with the western theater of the US Civil War where Grant's army utilized the Union 'brown water' riverine navy in the Mississippi River and the various tributaries that feed it. I can picture a homestead in Arkansas and a young rebel wanting to defend his home and family from this gunboat he sees as a foreign invader.

@@Ignatius1972LOL, not surprsing. Almost every cover they do is darker. It has something to do with Margo's voice and singing style when combing with the band stripped down delivery.

I'm not a musket expert, but I think powder finger refers to the discoloration of one's finger when poring out a measure of gunpowder into the barrel from the gunpowder bag. But I could be wrong. See the wonderful movie The Revenant (the opening scene with the river boat is all one take with incredible camera movement).

The song is about a short moment in time for the young man and it's context in time and history isn't very clear but it doesn't have to be. I always imagined it was mountain people vs government.

Absolutely great reaction and review. I place this song somewhere up a river in the Eastern US (possibly during prohibition) where the boy and his family live a subsistence life, probably with a few animals, truck garden, and hunting wild game. I suspect they also had a still and sold moonshine. The boat is official because it has numbers on the side, making it probably an Internal Revenue boat coming to raid the property. Red, is as you explained, and numbers add up to nothing is simply that officialdom isn't to be trusted. I subscribed on the basis of your understanding of the musicianship, vocals, and genre. I would also classify it as Americana in the vein of The Band.

Don't quote me, but I always figured this as set in the American War of Independence. "Red means run, son", run from the redcoats. "Numbers add up to nuthin'"? It don't matter if there's just a few of them, they're highly trained, you're not, so run!

"Rust Never Sleeps" is an all-time great album. Out of thousands of albums, it would crack my Top 20 of all-time. Brilliant from beginning to end. Half acoustic... half electric. Neil Young's narrative writing skills were at their peak and this album produced masterpiece after masterpiece. "Powderfinger" is one of those. Another is "Pocahontas." Hope you'll be checking out that gem (can't listen to it without shedding a tear)... along with the rest of the album. Have a great weekend, Justin!

Great review. The poor guy, who sounds like a naive lost soul, made the mistake of his short life when he thought he could take charge. The lack of context adds to it; a police boat, a turf war? Well, he's dead - that's the bottom line. Very unsettling but credit to Neil for refraining from beating a moral drum.
