Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZbin, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZbin. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZbin, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.
This is a reaction video used to educate and give my feedback on the song and artists.

Neil has tha amazing ability to write an entire novel in one sentence: "Big John's been drinkin' since the river took Emmylou." It provides context, yet also tells another entirely different and very sad story layered under the main one. That's incredible writing!

This is my all-time favourite Neil Young song. There are whole websites devoted to its meaning. I see it as the revenue officers coming up the river lookin' to shut down moonshiners. The boat is an government boat.

This is my favorite Young song too, and I agree with your interpretation. Young's brilliant lyrics sound like a Steinbeck short story set to music.

My guess is the line "red means run son" provides historical context. During the Revolutionary War the British were referred to as "redcoats" because.... you guessed it.... their uniform included a red coat. Maybe it's something else, but that was always my assumption going way back to when the song was originally released.

"Young recorded a solo acoustic version of "Powderfinger" at Indigo Ranch Recording Studio in Malibu, California in September 1975, and intended it for his unreleased mid-70s album Chrome Dreams. He later sent the tape to his friend Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd who were to use the song on their next album. However, Van Zant died in a plane crash in October 1977, and Lynyrd Skynyrd never recorded the song. The song was officially released in an electric version on Young's 1979 album with the band Crazy Horse, Rust Never Sleeps. The Indigo take was released in 2017 on Hitchhiker alongside other tracks from the session. "

Neil Young is The MAN. And this particular song is one of the reasons. It is a tough story, sung by a a tough man, and it is good enough to tear you up inside. But you should have played the version with the video from the movie "Rust Never Sleeps". Not whining, I own it, but I think you would enjoy seeing Neil and Crazy Horse doing their thing on stage, in their prime.

I saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse live in 1976 when I was 16 years old. The first set was Neil playing acoustic guitar, banjo and harmonica. The 2nd set was electric with Crazy Horse. The blew the roof off! Still my favorite concert after all these years and I've been to 100s of concerts.

Neil is so under rated a s brilliant guitarist. He's one of the truly great songwriter/storyteller/performers ever. I LOVE this brilliant track 🙋‍♂. I always felt his rifle backfired. The impression I always got that all this happened during the US civil war but I stand to be corrected.

I really do like this reaction now that I've watched to the end. For some reason, this is always been one of my favorite Neil Young songs. And he was on the radio and then my mind since I was a little kid but hate persisted for several years and influence so much other interesting music that was unfolding at the time when I was young and going into college-age.

Its a poignant tale of a young man living in the South during the Civil War. His dad was killed earlier in battle and his brother was out hunting in the mountains when the Union Army was approaching by boat. This brave young man did what he needed to do...grabbed his father's rifle and tried to protect his homestead from the northern invaders. Neil had a real gift for putting these types of stories into heart-felt yet still rockin' music. He always kept it real.

Why do you assume it’s a southern kid during the Civil War? Nothing in the lyrics indicate that. Neil is Canadian, and based on Southern Man, and Alabama, he doesn’t have too much regard for the Confederate cause. I think he deliberately left this story out of time or place, painting a picture of how an unprepared guy could make a bad decision, and perhaps start a war(?)

Awesome tuna salad… Canned Tuna: I prefer wild tuna in cans with water, but any variety works. Mayonnaise: You can use store-bought or make mayonnaise at home - it’s easy! Celery: For that fresh crunch with every bite. Red Onion: Finely diced red onion always provides the perfect savory balance. Parsley: A few tablespoons of fresh herbs really make this tuna salad recipe the best. Dijon Mustard: 1/2 tablespoon Salt and Pepper: to taste Bon Appétit!

Absolutely love your reaction as usual and now you're diving into it afterwards but I would point out that no it was extremely asymmetric, he did not get killed by a bullet after he raised his rifle to his eye. This is set in Civil War times but the ship that was approaching was lobbing cannonballs increasingly up towards him in their homestead. They took out the dock and then it was just coming and it was a very asymmetric gesture to raise a rifle in the face of that and then it just took him out. And then the words that he sings afterwards are almost like you would hear at a service or something and they are so provocative. I love that you're reacting to this kind of thing and really engaging with it.

As a suggestion for an Emmy Lou Harris song, "Evangeline" from "The Last Waltz" concert film with The Band is most excellent. With really good cinematography. Hey it's a Martin Scorsese directed movie.

i always assumed it was during the Civil War days judging from some of the lyrics. And it definately seems like the main character is from the South. The boat maybe a Union Army boat. And Powder Finger, like you got gun powder on your fingers from loading your rifle.

I think it's intentional how the exact details of the story are never given - it's just a song about the kind of circumstances, thoughts and emotions that lead a young person into violence. I always imagined it takes place in a community living on a river far from society, and if they see a gunboat approaching, they know it means trouble.

Neil Young on proper technique when playing guitar: "First off, nobody cares if you know how to play scales. Nobody gives a shit if you have good technique or not. It's whether you have feelings that you want to express with music, that's what counts, really. When you are able to express yourself and feel good, then you know why you're playing. The technical aspect is absolute hogwash as far as I'm concerned. It bores me to tears. I can't play fast. I don't even know my scales. I know that most of the notes I play aren't where I play them. They're simply not there. So you can play any note you like. I think about it on another level, I don't care about that sort of shit."
