I've never heard of Tori Amos. After listening to this, I saw another reaction video to her live performance of a song called 'Winter' live from 1992 in Montreux, so I watched it. I got chills.

I'm 46. I was in high school when this came out. It was the first time someone else in the world was saying what I wanted to say. My mother was the "the anti Christ in the kitchen." She gave me a voice.💛 thanks for this. I've been a fan of hers since day one.

One thing that's noticeable about Tori's music over the years is that the albums are a reflection of where she was as a person at that time. I know that some people couldn't connect with her music going into the 2000s but that's because by then she wasn't writing from the same dark places she was in when making her first few albums. She was almost 30 when her debut solo album was released, so as she reached her 40s she wrote from the point of view of a woman who has aired all her anguish and now can see beyond the world immediately close to her. I knew some songs growing up as a kid but it wasn't until I was 16 (in 2012) that I really delved in. Listening to each album in order without looking at any reviews really helped me listen to each album as their own.

In Feb 1992, I saw Tori Amos perform at KingTut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow (a small venue) and she was brilliant. Not that long afterwards I saw her again at the larger Candlerigs Hall and again she captivated the audience. She is a great song writer and terrific piano player and tries hard to face the audience whilst playing, a very tricky thing to do.

One thing I noticed she has the most loyal fan base I have ever seen, people absolutely love her. She has some great live performances, I recommend: Tori Amos - Precious Things (Live Session 1998). Tori Amos - Iieee (Live Session 1998). Or simply anything from Montreaux 1992, I recommend Smells Like Teen Spirit ; Winter. LOVE Tori Amos. Her music drips with emotion for so many reasons. The songs are often personal and confessional, especially on Little Earthquakes. But the way that she sings and plays piano at the same time she can match the emotion and intensity on every level with the instrument and her voice. She has incredible vocal control and vibrato, and her piano skills are amazing from her classical training and prodigious talent. Add the powerful imagery from her music, and it's such an overwhelming combination.

I love her first three albums, Little Earthquakes, Under The Pink and Boys For Pele. I initially bought Boys For Pele after the remixed version of Professional Widow became a hit. I can't even listen to that song, yet I'm so grateful it exists. That's a testament to its innate presence and power. I haven't listened to that track since I was, like, 15... in 1995... Yet, I remain a complete and avidly devout Tori-phile to this day. "Boys for Pele" is her artistic peak, imo, but her work is consistently stellar and connects to everyone in very specific, unique, (inexplicable), and intimate ways... My roommates friend in college, a 19 year old guy, summed her up really well. He didn't "get her", but he stated, quite simply (and accurately): "I don't know... She just *really* speaks to certain people..."

Dude there's not enough space for me to write what you missed. And her last name is pronounced ”A.MUS” Oh boy. Ok,those of us that are in our forties and have been fans since the beginning and are still fans have more than likely met her at the meet and greets she does before the shows and we know that the stuff that's personal to her she actually keeps pretty close to the chest. She uses a lot of metaphors just so you know the garbage truck thing you are way off on thatI won't get into it it'll take too long and has to do with Tori growing up with a way over religious grandmother. Tori's father is a minister with a doctorate in theology but she's also part native American so talk about conflict and belief system.anyway it is a heavy song and I appreciate that you're trying to appreciate it and when it comes down to art it's always up to The interpreter and what you get out of it. she's an amazingly gifted musician the youngest person to ever be accepted to the Peabody conservatory.

Read what Tori said about Joni in an interview: ''She took the clay and moulded it in a way we hadn't seen before. If you really sort of analyse songwriting at that time, male or female, what she was doing with her structures and her use of melody and her poetry and the voice too, you know that's just one of the gifts that we've had.''

I used to be a "heavy metal chick" and discovered this song somehow around 1997 at age ~30. And I was hooked. I love Tori. But I actually never got this much out of the lyrics. I took at as more of an incompatible relationship. I am not good with symbolicism, so the general feel of the song that you also felt came through, but it was as if I saw it through a thick cloud of smoke and you see it in all its stark details. Thank you so much for this detailed interpretation of the lyrics and for the story of the women from Israel. On a side note, for me, this is a song I can and have listened to over and over, but part of that was wanting to sing with it, as I felt like I was expressing something within myself as I sang it, and I love the piano and how it builds up. But I do understand why it isn't something 90% of the people in the world won't want to listen to regularly.

Her unique chord progressions and honest, uncompromising lyricism propel her inter rare air as a songwriter, though she is an equally gifted performer. She has more soothing songs meant for pensive emoting, such as this one and Winter, but she is very versatile and has some darker badass pieces as well, like Precious Things, Cornflake Girl, or Crucify. If I could recommend one more piece from her to react to, you might want to try Precious Things.

Tori's first solo album "Little Earthquakes" comes from deep emotional pain. Musically and poetically it is a masterpiece. The album reflects a beginning in the process of healing. I find this to be her most raw emotional state of being. I was fortunate enough to have seen many of her earliest performances in very small venues. She drew from the raw pain in her earliest concerts and she made them very personalized poetic experiences. Her albums over time reflect her different mind state as she had healed internally and moved on to explore other things.

Dang, I've been so close to listening to Tori Amos a bunch of times, so now I'm finally listening to her. I kind of agree, musically it doesn't do a lot for me, at least for now, but it does make me want to give another couple songs a try. I was thinking it sounded like a great opener for a musical, where themes from the music and lyrics could develop and maybe resolve over time. One detail that I'm for some reason really liking is where what sounds like a clarinet comes in at 3:50. M, yeah now that I'm hearing it again, the way its written and the accompanying orchestra just sounds so much like a musical. I'd bet the album is the kind where each song has its effect best when its heard with the whole album.

Love when Tori is Voce and Piano - There are many more experimental Songs by her - these strange notes grew more on the follow up album . By the 4th one the style changed compleat - the old Tory was back on Scarelts Walk. Hard to Love all her musik, because it´s such a wide range in of styles but some I realy love.

Yes it's from her debut album but she did record another 5 yrs. earlier as lead in a synthpop band, both the album and band were called Y Kant Tori Read but "Little Earthquakes" is the real start of her career. This is the 1st song I heard by her, probably saw the video on MTV and it's still my favorite by her, so intense, it goes straight to my heart. The line about the garbage truck I thought it meant she threw away something that she didn't want to be seen, some evidence that would have gotten her in trouble. I have all of her albums, she's very talented but her first 2 are my favorites still.

I got this album when it came out and I've loved it ever since. She's a real talent that may well have been influenced by Kate Bush but she is her own artist and any influence was soaked up and used brilliantly. I love them both. Love the whole album. Would also put in a word for Cornflake Girl.

Crucify, also from Little Earthquakes, or the song LE itself, offer a different perspective on Tori's musical abilities. Winter is a soft, slow, very tame ballad. Personally I prefer Doughnut Song or Tear in Your Hand for that type of song.

Loved your reaction to this one! I love some of Tori's songs and she always reminded me somewhat of Kate Bush, but each of them is in the league of their own! Both of them are great, imho! If you think this one was emotional and personal, try listening to and reacting to Tori Amos's song called "Me and a Gun"! It's one of those mind-blowing songs bound to make one cry! I have certainly shed quite a lot of tears each time I listened to it. And I can't listen to it too often, because it's so tough thematically!

Interesting. I remember hearing it when this song came out and I think I got more out of it today. There was then - and still is to an extent - a lot of baggage attached to her. In the UK at least she was regarded by many with suspiscion as an overly earnest, clumsy "Kate Bush Lite" copyist (not in terms of expression but more simply, by ability) and people pointed at Kate's "The man with the child in his eyes" as being a template thematically. I have to say I think all of that is unfair and a somewhat lazy and crude analysis itself. So, although I'm not a fan, I think the body of work she has produced in the intevening years deserves to put pay to all that.

I had friends, Kate Bush fans, who couldn't get on board with Tori, feeling it to be too derivative of Kate. If this had been her only album, the argument might have some merit. But her catalog is too good to be dismissed as just derivative. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but she is one of those artists that divides the listeners. Count me as a fan.

Tori said in an interview I saw on TV that when her music first came out, poeple pointed this out to her. So she went and listended to some Kate Bush and thought "yeah, I can see that". She didn't know at the time who Kate Bush was or any of her music.

I’ve never heard this before and I’ve been a fan since her career began. I’ve never thought once about her being derivative of anyone. I also like Kate Bush but I’d actually pick Tori over her and I’m ok with somebody disagreeing with that. 😉 She’s one hell of a performer as well. So many great shows we’ve been lucky to see. One aspect that is somewhat overlooked throughout her career is her ability to rework great songs by artists she admires. Her original music is fantastic and so are her covers. My favorite being her version of Leonard Cohen’s, “Famous Blue Raincoat”. Amazing.

I’ve always interpreted this song as a breakup song, sung by the abandoned party. (”So you’ve found a girl who thinks really deep thoughts”, etc). And that the song is an attempt at finding strength in that grief. But your guess is as good as mine, of course. :)

About the lyrics you may be right. So I can't add anything. Musically I liked the song in the parts where the strings were where they belong to in this case - absent. I find them really destracting. It seems too much trying to force an emotional output. A song about silence can be loud as a contrast ("Sounds of Silence" by Disturbed for instance). But I have the impression that a complaint more silent would be the stronger one in this song. The parts with only piano and vocals remind me a little bit of Regina Spektor although she is younger and so it would be more correct that she reminds me of Tori Amos. But I am much more familiar with Mrs. Spektor's work.

I vividly remember the impression Tori Amos made on me when this first came out. She seemed like a voice I'd wanted or needed to hear with the way she fronted up to difficult subjects with an understated rage and sardonic wit. A more mature and articulate version of Kate Bush, and a technically more capable singer and musician. As much as it was imperative to go out and buy this debut album, nothing afterwards connected with me in quite the same way and I soon turned my attention elsewhere. Winter, I think, will be her most enduring song. I've never heard anything more beautiful.

@@delorangeade I'm not sure what Kate Bush songs you've heard, but to say that Tori is a more mature and articulate version of Kate is slightly bizarre. Try comparing The Coral Room or Deeper Understanding with songs like Mr Zebra or Programmable Soda, for example. I am a big fan of both artists, but I wouldn't dream of trying to suggest that one is a more 'capable' singer/musician than the other. They're just coming from a different place, and using a different emotional and musical palette.

I was about to type on my keyboard when I are saying that you probably wouldn't listen to it too much. This is exactly what I wanted to say. I didn't get the lyrics while I listening although she pronounces it quite correctly, but the pace is fast and there's a lot of words... so I found the song... boring. The piano is great, her voice is very good (remind me Kate Bush in a way) but I found the all thing too flat, or dull... Don't know if I say it the right way. Thanks for the lyrics explanations. It's a strong story and it's very well written, but again, too monotonous and depressing for me. Hey ! You've said my name ! And with the english pronunciation ! Great !

Do people still say this tired crap? Listen to Tori's album "To Venus And Back" and tell me you hear Kate AT ALL in it. I love both dearly but this is so tiresome. Everyone wants to pit female artists against one another so badly. Besides, Tori has been making music for as long as Kate has. Sure, she blew up in popularity in the early 90s but she had been writing since the early 70s (as a child prodigy). Tori is her own woman and Kate is her own woman.
