I like how everyone is riveted to Joe's storytelling. Even Bart is looking like he hasn't heard some of these stories despite how long they have known each other. Thank you for sharing your stories Joe. It is appreciated.

Joe trying not to say anything to crazy was my favorite part I’ve told stories about where I have to watch my every word too thanks for opening up Joe these are amazing I can’t wait for the others
@newch1-x8m2 ай бұрын
that's because there's a difference between real gangbangers and dudes like Joe who were part of some low level crew that just tags and sells drugs. It's why you never see him mention any real (Asian) gangs like Wah Ching, ABZ, etc because at that time dudes who were actually in the streets were getting murked from other dudes/crews trying to make a name for themselves. It's just laughable to me because I grew up during that time and area and there were a ton of wanna-be gangsters
@sleepybabe42 ай бұрын
Hmm, doesn’t negate trauma
@Tony_9402 ай бұрын
@@newch1-x8mmy brother grew up during that time (OC/westminister) and he told me it was just a cool thing to do at that time. Lots of people would post up at pool halls, the mall, or wherever the spot to hang out was back then and dudes would look at each other the wrong way and a rumble would break out. Then when people actually got smoked they “turned over a new leaf” 💀
@newch1-x8m2 ай бұрын
@@sleepybabe4 sure but it's disingenuous. it's no different than people who are well off that try to paint themselves as someone who grew up in the hood/had a life of struggle so they don't get discredited by others for having the privilege and opportunities that their parents gave them

Joe speaking for a lot of young teens growing up in the 90’s. Most of us were young and dumb and just looking for a purpose in life that’s all. A lot to prove and nothing to loose. The sad truth is the older heads would use the younger ones.

I've experienced that false sense of security. The most dangerous people made me feel the most safe. Because they were my homies and as a woman, they look out for you. After 5 years or so I got a new place to live and decided to leave that all behind me. Start fresh and legal. Turned out to be the perfect moment. Not long after that one of my homies stabbed a guy in the neck and went to prison. Another went to see family in jamaica. But he got kidnapped there and eventually killed by shooting him in the chest and face. That shit is way too crazy for me. I didn't grow up in the hood or anything. Those 5 years was great. Partied hard. But it's a closed chapter.

If anyone is interested in the Asian SGV 90s-early 2000s gang history , the local police gave themselves extra authority to violate the rights of citizens because they wanted Asian gangs to stop asap as the violence was escalating rapidly. If you looked like you banged, you'd get pulled over and searched without probable cause. They also had double agent investigators in the gangs because Asian don't raisin. A lot of the gang members loved drugs, the main drugs were stimulants, I don't think opiates were ever popular in SGV. There's probably a lot of untreated ADHD induced by childhood trauma lol. A lot of the fighting was on sight back then, if you're in the wrong area and typically outnumbered. And that can just be a city over lol. It was mainly high schoolers that were into fighting. I believe the street violence started in the 80s, in schools from east LA to the other side of SGV, Latinos would beat up Asians immigrants cause they didn't want them there, and gangs would be formed. The tendency towards violence also came from immigrating from war-torn countries and residual trauma. And then it changed into rival gangs of any race would fight. There are still Asian gangs in SGV, just go to a local college and you'll find one cause they're trying to get a degree but still deal lol. They don't do tats anymore, or colors. They don't do fights anymore. They're all about money. The Latino gangs aren't as flashy either, but they're still violent towards each other.

In OC back in 1995-2001 there was a vietnamese gang called VT Vietnamese Together who did Gorilla tactics - jo mention why you need a name that's gonna put a target on your back, true. So these guys VT would dress up as a rival gang and shoot at their other rival gangs. SMART AF they dress up as Asian Crips and shoot at their enemy's TOP (Tiny Oriental Posse) or POV (Power of Vietnamese) and it would trick the enemy to go Shoot at the Asian Boyz... they would do this for 5 years straight. Until someone got caught and they ended up snitching but everyone knew it was them... they smart but they snitch 😂

Joe has an interesting way of seeing his life within the context of his dysfunctional family and community. It’s like he’s reached a point of being able to see himself as a child from an outside perspective with all the influences that affected him. He definitely wasn’t innocent in the choices he made, a real criminal. The level of dysfunction and evil in his family and those communities is just beyond belief. It’s a miracle anyone comes out of that without being equally evil.
