Something I like about thrfting (online or IRL) is the sheer diversity of styles. There's this ''everything is possible vibe'' that is unmatched by any store, fast fashion or not. I imagine that makes it even more fun as an experience with friends!

I immediately recalled that in one of your style videos you said “The Sound of Music is forever” when you talked about Julie Andrews for the layered dresses. It really shows how 1) how consistent and sustainable you are with your wardrobe and your content and 2) how often I watch your videos 😂

Here people put their give-away clothes on the street, either in a box or hang them up on their fences of the front yards. And you can adopt things as you like. I know quite an number of ppl that only dress from this source. It‘s so nice: you don‘t go out with the intention to get yourself some new clothes, they just happen to you
@pirlie Жыл бұрын
Yes that works in (bigger) cities, and where the people still have an eye on their boxes, so the stuff doesnt rott in the rain. Alternatively there are "give away for free" groups on facebook and other social media, or brick and mortar "free stores" where you can bring stuff in and take out without the exchange of money.

I live in Portugal and we have a lot of swap iniciatives, but they usually work in markets or shops! I'm a volunteer with Let's Swap and they have teams working all throughout the country and a very efficient system were you are awarded points for the pieces you bring in and can use those points to "shop" around their racks. The great thing is if you don't spend all your points they are kept in a database so you can use them in any event anywhere in the country!

No, sorry, from what I know they were founded not so long a go by a couple of friends from Porto and they aren't even officially an association, just an initiative so they are focused on growing with in Portugal atm! I'd love to know if there was anything like Big Sister Swap in the Iberian Peninsula, but from what I know there is nothing yet 😢

I’m always scared to alter clothes for fear of ruining them - particularly when they’re items I really love! Would love a video on that and maybe one on paying a tailor and what they offer for people who don’t want to/can’t sew?
@RachaelTheRed Жыл бұрын
The best way to find out what a tailor can do is to call up one in your area and ask. I have a local tailor that I love and the possibilities of what they can do are near endless. Most people only think of tailors for things like hemming pants or taking in a shirt but they can do so so much more! They can completely reinvent garments for you and a lot of them still make items from scratch. You just have to go in and ask. I know it seems intimidating at first, but having a good tailor is life-changing.

My library has free swap shelving for clothes, toys, home textiles, books, dvds, games and other small items. I think its a great way for small community libraries to entice people in more often and also to keep a sense of community in these times when we are often quite isolated and apart from out neighbours. I have been happy to learn that despite not knowing anyone here I share different tastes and intrests with a lot of people in my neighborhood! Most of my favourite and most complimented clothes come from the swap!

So now I have 10 weeks protection from shopping (even if on vinted) for non-essential items!

My best friend organises a big clothes swap party in her city twice a year and I love it! The items that get swapped are usually very high quality so I don't feel bad to throw in high quality items as well. The downside is its not that size inclusive because it depends on the size of the people swapping. But I look for things to give to my mum and sister so it's still a lot of fun. Everyone can bring up to 5 items and can take as much as they want. Most people take less than 5 but we want the things back in circulation and not bother with a token system.

Everything what was left went to charity. But the energy of total stangers giving you suggestions, people you see and think... you would good in my dress, and they do and take it home with them and you get a big hug 😊. Amazing experience!!!

Seems like this exemplifies the reason I don't use stylist-by-mail services. Leena went through the whole ordeal of filling out the survey, packing up stuff to send in, and then going directly to them, but left most of their picks on the rack. Imagine waiting all the time it takes to ship things back and forth and have your items evaluated, only to have things sent to you that you don't actually like. Glad this exists for those who don't have another option, but I'll stick to brick and mortar thrifting.
@TwelvetreeZ Жыл бұрын
The way you felt wearing that jumpsuit is how I felt when I tried on a silky yellow jumpsuit in an Oxfam changing room last year. It was gorgeous, and it fitted me, but... It didn't feel like me, and I couldn't think of an occasion when I would wear it and feel like myself. I left it on the rack for somebody else. I've since found myself gravitating to a more masc vibe, so I feel vindicated in my decision. It wasn't on the rack two weeks later, so I trust it went to a loving home!

I am also somebody who, now that I have steered away from fast fashion stores, sometimes misses the experience of going shopping and trying on clothes with my friends and having fun together in the store changing rooms. In my city in the Netherlands we have a shop called Appel & ei(translation Apple & egg lol) where people can bring in their own clothes to sell and you can just walk in, everything is second hand and it's like that normal shopping experience, except there is only one of each item usually. It's super fun, because they get new stuff in all the time and you never know what you're gonna find. I've never sold stuff there, but I'm sure I will in the future. Granted, you don't get 100% of the money, the store gets a commission, but it's still more than if I had given it away or (shudders) thrown it in the bin.

I organise something similar biannually with my best friend! We've both invite all our friends to clean out their closets and come to my house, we lay everything out and then 'shop' for free in each others old clothes. It's on a very small scale but this also allows us to just take whatever, without calculating how much you brought and how much you take home. Their always the days of the year and at this point, about half of my closet is from the clothing swap.
