Re: the decapitaded jumpsuit If you dont want to fiddle too much with the crotch-depth, you could try making a separate waistband from a different fabric and put the elastic in that instead! That way you lose less of the original fabric in the waist, really just the seam allowance, and you dont have to worry about the length. Also, fun contrasting waistband!

Exactly. Either a contrasting waistband, or a facing, which would keep the original fabric on the outside, and a waistband facing sewed on with a narrow seam allowance and turned inside to form the elastic channel.

For the former jumpsuit. Unpick the waistband and add a strip of fabric (black if possible, but it will be folded inside so it doesn't really matter) and tuck that around the waistband so you regain the length in the patterned part of the trousers. Heck. You could even use your fun leopard print you've been making pockets out of (understitching so it doesn't roll up and reveal itself), and then it's even more uniquely precious to you. I second getting a second hand machine! The new cheap ones are not made to last, and they're annoying to use. The best option is not just a second hand machine but a vintage sewing machine (think pre 80s). If they're in working order they are bomb proof. As long as they're looked after they will outlast cheap modern machines. And they're easy to find second hand.

I love the fluttery sleeves on the leopard dress -- fab that you found its twin secondhand! If you hadn't, contrasting sleeves in a different fabric would've worked -- could also add a matching ruffle on the bottom to tie in the new fabric.

This blows my mind about what you said about dresses, because I literally have been going back and forth about whether or not to sew a dress or just stick with a shirt and skirt. I have had issues with my hormones/weight changes too, and sewing a skirt seems a lot less intimidating than sewing a full on dress (especially if my weight fluctuates again, it will be less labor for me to sew). To the chopped jumpsuit and the waist changing to low: you can buy broad black elastic waistband and just sew it on, so you end up with more instead of less! Or as someone else mentioned, you could make a waistband out of a different fabric (like say, plain black). Either way you end up with a higher waistband instead of the low one!

Unsolicited advice incoming: Unpick the folded over waistband, Cut a piece out of any scrap fabric (mayhaps the leapord print?) that is the same length as the waist line circumference, adding seam allowance on all edges. Use that to create elastic channel. Gain back pockets. Save the dinosaur claws for another crisis 😁

If you undo the elastic waist you've already put into the trousers you can put in a facing and thus loose maybe an inch of fabric, even less. Then sew a new channel for the elastic using the existing fabric and the facing underneath.

BTW on the subject of the journey of clothes- remember that natural material clothing can be composted at home. My mum composts old t-shirts, socks, and knickers. We fish the elastic out of the heap 12 months down the line. It keeps it out of landfill.

I love this! You can unpick the waistband in the trousers, add a facing to the waistline and use that to make the elastic channel to make the most of the fabric you have. It's probably easier than trying to drop the crotch, and it'll free your pocket (probably), happy crafting!

As a Swede that absolutely wear my dresses less that my shirts, I think the stats has more to do with how hard (not impossible but still hard) it is to wear your dresses you probably bought for summer time, when it’s piss cold outside, which it is majority of the year here. A long legged and long sleeve jumpsuit is much easier! So my guess is it isn’t a perfect correlation to your problem, but if it feels true for you and your clothing habits, I’m all for it! As a sewer, I immediately found myself reimagining the garments you were going to let go of. I was sad, because you seemed so attached to them. And then, YAY! You did almost exactly what I was thinking to do!!! I didn’t consider finding another dress to use to make sleeves for your wrap dress, but that was an amazing idea. I agree with others here who mentioned adding a separate waistband to the pant portion of the former jumpsuit, to add back some length to the crotch. I was also thinking about how that last top might look layered over a lightweight white blouse with poufy sleeves, so it could be worn in cooler weather, too. When you are ready to make pants from scratch, I recommend the “top down, center out” fitting method. I’ve been sewing for many decades and have made many pants, but NOTHING has been easier or faster or more reliable than that method for fitting pants. Fitting pants is tricky, and all of the traditional methods and advice just made me want to take a nap. Top down, center out is the way to go, all day every day!

I'm a make-do-and-mend child. Not a sewist myself (cannot keep a sewing machine alive!) but I am a tinkerer, a tryer out, a fiddler, and a low-flying pest for innocent pieces of clothing otherwise minding their own business. I cannot recall the last time I 'rehomed' anything! I'll let stuff out by ripping the side seams and adding a strip of material. I'll lengthen by adding a false hem. I converted an old shirt into a ;granda' shirt by removing the flippy over bit of the collar. I removed the whole collar of something to lower the neckline. I tend to keep offcuts of something 'in case'. And usually find a use. I've even been known to alter knitted items by cutting them up the front and adding a binding. I do knit (or did not so much now), so I could rip stuff back and reuse the wool, but I don't think I've ever done that! One Christmas in my youth I had NO MONEY so I made little informal patchwork items out of irregula pieces of worn out jeans etc for my friends. They worked well. And looked great. .... so when are you going to get into patchwork. Just sayin' 😏

I think with the dress usage thing is it's also a part of the way we westerners tend to think about wearing clothes in themselves. I love that the more I've gotten into sewing from japanese patterns the more I've understood about the possibilities of layering when your pieces are made with exactly that in mind. Having three very simple dresses but in different fabric and lengths (and bonus: two different necklines on each piece so you can flip it!) have become the staple starting point of an outfit dressed up or down with other clothing items and accessories like bows, flowers, shoes, bags, hats, scarfs and jewelery, when as usually before I started sewing I would really see dresses as a single use stand alone piece. I don't know why! I love wearing my simple dresses with other dresses too! If it has a zipper or buttons going down or it's a wrap-style dress you can easily wear it as a duster on top of your tops and pants or skirts or get funky pattern clash-moments when you wear them on top of another dress!

Love this idea and I adore the Frankenstein top!!! In my city, there is a charity shop that donates all the clothes they don't or can't sell to emergency rooms at hospitals for people who need something to wear after they are discharged. Not sure how much of it gets used or if the patients throw the clothes away after, but another option to think of when getting rid of clothes.

If you ever want to turn a jumpsuit into two pieces again, I recommend that you add fabric to the top for the elastic casing to avoid being stuck with a short crotch. If the pants need to be hemmed at least two inches and are wide legged, then you could use the fabric that you removed, cutting the two tubes to make a large circle for your waist.

My theory about dresses being "less versatile/wearable" is that women have moved away from wearing dresses as "everyday" staples so the general mentality is that even a casual tshirt dress is "dressing up." This has caused a decline in their wear vs tshirts are the new everyday staple. This was my personal mentality once i hit puberty and took a few years to get out of in college. I now wear my dresses about as much as my pants. I have noticed that personally i find most skirts less wearable than pants, but recently figured out the specific type of skirts that work for me so that may change. I also find jumpsuits *way* less wearable than even dresses since it requires basically undressing to use the bathroom. I've only ever worn one though so maybe that isnt the case with all. A note on your new pants: i would have added a new waistband rather than trying to move the crotch and pockets. I think a solid black waistband would have been a beautiful and simple addition to the set.

This is incredible Leena!! Something that always strikes me when I do a closet clean out is how many ratty old tshirts I have, but I know they’d never be resold and would go straight to landfill. For the trousers, wouldn't it be easier to unpick the waistband you made and use another piece of material to make the inside of the waistband, that way you don't loose as much of the fabric, the waist will be higher, the pockets will be more accessible, the crotch lower.... saves you a lot of work! but also brilliant work!

Hey Leena! About the traousers, you can pick up a black fabric from the fabric store that is similar to the garment, and make a waist out of it. another option (althought it can be uncomfortable to wear to some) is to use a wide elastic band,sewn to the trousers, directly.

I love this! My favorite pieces of clothing are things I’ve modified heavily with sewing after I got tired of them or my style changed. I also tend to wear a lot of my clothes until they’re so worn that they’re not acceptable to donate, at which point I cut them up into strips and use them in place of cleaning rags or paper towels. So they do end up on the trash, just after a lot of good use and multiple transformations!

In the US it’s pretty difficult to find reliable clothes recycling outside of a big city. Usually you either have to pay for a company that sends a bag or you need to lug it to a city. Meaning a lot of people end up either putting clothes in the bin or taking them to a big donation center where they end up in the same place. It’s definitely something we need to add to our long list of things to work on.

the only pieces that end up in my trash are worn/ stained/ ripped underwear, bras and socks. Shirts and pants become fabric, pockets to extend my current ones or pieces to be rebuilt. You could pop a sewing tack into the open channel through the elastic so (sew) the sewn end doesn't move through the channel and you need to recut the elastic if you need to change it.

I have a big problem with throwing away clothes, to the point of hoarding 20 year old clothes that I haven't worn in 15... something that has really helped me recently is that now we have recycling bins for textile and shoes (used for insulation, cleaning rags and other ways), and also the Red Cross have donation bins.

I have a jeans that doesn’t fit anymore, but when it still fit, I had some stains on it from painting/renovating. So since it was so comfortable and I just learned about Japanese quilting techniques, I used other much worse off jeans and patched over the stains and some other places with decorative stitching. Very jeans on jeans and definitely out there, but if it wasn’t too small now and low waisted, I would definitely still wear it

I have been unhappy with my 'underlayers"; the camisoles and t-shirts and longsleeves I wear underneath cardigans and sweaters. They're shapeless, boxy fits, crewnecks, plain jersey fabric... Lots of people like their boxy cotton crewneck tees, but I don't. My style is much more feminine than that. I have literally been in instances where I was too hot but didn't want to remove my sweater because what I was wearing was just too ugly lol. I looked on vinted for new lacy camisoles & longsleeves, but before I bought any of them I was like "hold up, I CAN SEW" So I started changing the necklines and sleevelenghts, taking in, adding ruching and lace edges to jersey tees. I have started with black & light pink ebcause those colors lace I can find in local brick & mortar stores. I have "weird" colors as well for which finding the right color stretch lace will be a lot trickier. Of course, the lace is new, but salvaging that old fabric is better than donating it or throwing it in a recycling bin because who knows where it will end up. Equally, the vinted girlies might spend the money they earn from me buying their random tops on brand new fast fashion, while I use my selling money (I am selling lots of things for very low prices because my style changed a lot recently) on lace or I keep the money on there to thrift.

With the overalls with faces, I suggest adding material as a waist band and this should relieve the pocket and crotch issues. With adding sleeves, I have used a contrast material to add length, sleeves and collars or ruffles to make the additions look like design features.

I'm not the best sewist, but for the past few years I've used scrap fabric from old worn out clothes to make dog toys for my siblings' pets. Every year they come out a bit better, and every year my siblings say that it becomes their dog's favorite toy.

LOVE LOVE LOVE what you have done with these. I nearly cried when I thought you were going to get rid of the And Other Stories flirty dot/leopard wrap as you look amazing in brown. But WOW...looks even better with the new sleeves. Would never guess you werent an experienced seamstress. I've done the same thing if needed to add material to a dress, bought another one cheap

Use a all black fabric to do a waistband for the black trousers and you’ll get them higher and the pockets back!!

I think it’s lovely that you kept the dress you have been wearing longer as the main body of the dress and the way you explained your reasons. I find that one of the beautiful things about trying to curate a wardrobe that is gentler on the planet and other people is that I fall in love with favorite pieces and get really happy to see them in my closet and style them and even launder and mend them. It feels nice.

This was excellent, I hope THIS becomes your yearly clear out! ❤! That tie top is absolutely amazing! 🎉❤ I have clothes from around 10years ago, some even more. I really worry about throwing them away, but some of them are truely, quite holey and threadbare 😅. I'm going to give sashiko a go! I feel like as a crafty person. You would also enjoy that!

amazing! well done leena♡ ive been trying to do this myself. i call it "frankensteining" when i stitch one bit to another bit. like top of favorite overalls to bottoms that fit better... or making my skinny jeans all boot cut / wide leg from other jeans. got some excellent ideas from blueprint diy. i love all that you did with your makes. you look amazing in them. and how clever to make them size fluid! excellent ideas. the inspo is mindblowing♡ thank you

I know how to fix that!!! Undo the elastic channel & get some sacrificial black fabric to add at the waistband & sew the elastic channel from that then turn it in so you cant see the plain black xx
