The thing is, yes it's crazy packed in october, but that is when everyone there is dressed up in costume and it turns into like a real life Halloweentown, they do live reenactments of the trials, and street performances, it really is cool but the rest of the year its just a historical town

I actually do have Salem on my bucket list. Because, I want to go to my 10th Great Grandmother's memorial and pay my respects to her. She was Susannah North Martin, who was hung on July 19, 1692. She was accused of being a "witch, but was just a 72 year old Christian lady , who would not admit that she was a "witch", thus she was hung.

As a resident of Salem, I definitely would not have recommended most of the places you went to. Salem is home to the oldest continual museum in the US, Peabody Essex Museum. You should have stopped there. When I visit cities, I ask locals where to go… not yelp.

We went in October 2023 and loved it. I had broken my leg the previous May so I couldn't walk as much as I wanted but I loved it. I can't wait to come back. We stayed at 4 Broad Street. My only regret is not getting the stained glass tombstone angel at the Witch Museum.

As someone who grew up in Danvers, which is Old Salem. I’d say make sure to do more than watch Hocus Pocus before making the choice to visit Salem alone. The Rebecca Nurse home is in Danvers and has the best info on the time period. Remember it was basically a mass execution, not a pointy hat and cute spells and cats. That said if you are willing to venture outside Salem, Little Italy pizza in Beverly is top notch, Supremes in Danvers, little spots. If you want more cosmopolitan vibes go to Newburyport, maybe Gloucester or Boston. In my opinion Salem just isn’t exciting enough to visit without venturing to other towns. Hope this helps!

Researching the place would have helped greatly in not being disappointed by the destination. I haven’t been to Salem yet and I was a bit surprised about how much you didn’t know beforehand and I’m talking general knowledge. Even watching a couple of good videos on here would have helped avoid the tourist traps if one doesn’t have some grasp of the history of the places to visit in the city. Seriously, this was totally on you.

If you really had food poisoning, you would have been too sick to even get out of bed with severe cramps and nausea. Food poisoning is that bad, with constant trips to the bathroom to empty your GI tract from both ends. Chances are whatever you ate just disagreed with you. My sister and her daughter also went to Salem, this year. They went the first week in October. They paid a normal price at a local chain hotel. Locals told them that the leaves won't change until the end of October. Watching KZbinr Rachel Maksy who lives in Massachusetts, you could tell this was true by just looking at her yard. Still want to go. I was surprised you didn't comment on the House of Seven Gables, the namesake of the famous novel or the Hocus Pocus house. Did they not have any local dishes to try? I wouldn't go to Massachusetts to get a tortilla warp. Save that for California or the southwest.

Salem is both touristy and historic. You can do all the schockly, scary "witch" things (the witch, pirate, etc. "museums") and historical things (PEM, House of the Seven Gables, etc.). It is a beautiful city and delightfully walkable in the historical part of it. If you want the rowdy and crowded Halloween experience, go in October. If you want a quieter experience, go in other good weather months. You can find less expensive hotels in Salem, or in nearby towns, like Peabody. I've visited it several times & find something new and fun everytime.

I'm not sure what you expected when touring a historic New England town. Salem isn't the site of the first witch trials, Connecticut is. There are no such thing as Satanic Witches but you were indeed surrounded by witches in Salem. Many people there practice. ❤

I went to Salem in the late 70’s. I stayed in Boston for three weeks and took a bus to Salem. There were not as many tourist attractions then, witchcraft still being somewhat in the closet, and some like the Witches House were closed in December. Focusing on history and literature,I did my own walking tour and toured the House of Seven Gables and places associated with Nathaniel Hawthorne. One of the highlights for me was the Peabody Essex Institute Museum. It’s a large old museum with several floors. If you like early American architecture and gardens, it is a great place for walking.I would recommend not staying in Salem and doing a little research before leaving so you know which places you wish to visit.

I think The House of the Seven Gabels is probably one of the best historical places to visit, even though it's not about witches. There's nothing kitchy or touristy about it and it's beautiful. I loved visiting Salem and had a great time tbh. I love architecture, so I had a blast just walking around the town. I'd definitely go back! A bit out of the main town core was the Black Veil Shop of Drear and Wonder, and it was one of the coolest vibes (but pricey items). And the Satanic Temple has the best gift shop and awesome art :)

Witch Dungeon is one of the best attraction as is the Witch Museum. If you’re expecting to see an actual Witch in Salem you will be disappointed. They dress like you and me and they don’t announce it. Most people sell the hype. Salem is a tourist trap…it’s like Disney for the Dark…without the rides unless you go in October. Salem is HUGE on supporting local artists. Artists row is one of the best places to go. I lived there for 30 years

I visited Salem last October, and I absolutely loved it. I do plan on going back at some point. Some of the locals were extremely welcoming, but others would bitch about tourists. I was in a cafe and this man went on a rant about tourists. 😂 I'm from Monterey, California. We get tourists every year as well, so I understand how annoying it can be... but it brings in so much revenue and, in turn, makes it a more beautiful place to live. I just rolled my eyes at the guy and went about my day. I haven't finished this video yet, but I hope you went to the Black Veil Shop of Drear and Wonder. It's run by twin brothers, both tattoo artists. It was one of my favorites in Salem. 😍

it's really not "the witch house" it's the House of the Seven Gables, a historic landmark known to have inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne. It looks spooky but it's not meant to be about witches. It's better to go to learn about Salem's maritime history. People treat Salem (and a lot of New England in general) like some extra special magical places when they're just...normal. If you go with regular expectations and do your research in advance it's nice. Also you should have taken the trolley tour and taken a day trip to the Plimoth Patuxet Museum if you could swing it.

Hi. You were on my recommendation page so first time watching, as I live in MA. If you want to see the leaves you could always try November as sometimes... and I say sometimes, winter hasn't hit yet. For places to stay you may find cheaper ones outside of Salem and then just take the train into Salem as it's right on the line. Also, visit Danvers, the original Salem Village where everything started. What's funny is at 53, born and have lived here all my life I've yet to visit Salem. A cool, living museum, is Old Sturbridge Village which is basically an 1830s working village. Anyway, I liked the video and will check out more.

I am sorry, you had not the greatest time there. We had been in Salem this year in February for two and a half days. Although a lot of shops and museums had been closed during this time of the year, it was a great experience. We also loved the Village Tavern and had a good cup of coffee and some cake at the Gulu-Gulu cafe. We also had excellent sushi at the Which City Hibachi. We visited the House of the 7 gables, which was definetely my favourite museum and the Salem Witch museum. And in my opinion, there is one of the best crystal shops I have ever visited. We stayed at Hawthorne hotel (loved it), which has a nice but small bar area. We had a great time in Salem and hopefully come back (but not in winter) one time. Greetings from Switzerland.

When i went to salem, i had a nice time. My partner and i did a mix of tourist and non tourist things. The local restaurants are great (we went to brody's seaport). We went earlier in october, which was fine for us we arent crazy about the crowds). Salem itself is a small town with lots of hidden gems that aren't just witchy. It also has a rich sailing history. There was a slightly cheesy but kinda cool pirate museum we stumbled on. I think going once was enough to see everything for the time we spent but i wouldnt mind going back on even more of an off season. Having been a pagan for a while once you've seen one metaphysical shop you've seen em all. But overall a good time. Granted I'm from NJ I dont have to go far like you did. One more thing the best time to go to Salem is during October. Halloween night is a blast. You missed the biggest draw which is Halloween night when they close the entire downtown & wharf area off. Bands everywhere and the costumes and people watching is amazing. Tourist season is April to Halloween Night. You are going to pay peak season prices in September because everyone tries to slide in at the end of September. Most people stay in a surrounding town and Uber in. Most Haunted Houses open October 1st or right after Haunted Happenings kicks off (huge parade too)

When i went the food ranked from decent to awesome. Depends on where you go. Some places can kinda suck as mentioned. As far as the stay i suggest look at a summer trip. As far as Places to stay the more in advance you place tour stay the cheaper it is. It gets expensive because too many people try to book only a month in advance. try 4 months or more and you'll get good deals. I've gone a few times and noticed package deals hotel and flight together are usually cheaper too. When nearing fall season it gets more expensive. Really i suggest a Boston/Salem trip because Boston is right across the water. To all coming id also suggest 2 tours for fun and history, house of 7 gables, and discover on your own. Research historical sites and places you want to visit really helps and trolley takes you around whole parameter of city. It sounds like you all just had some bad luck and wish it went better. If you ever go back look up where locals go for food. Look up history of Salem too as well Massachusetts. There are 2 Salem's the original is in Danvers. Plus there's 4 castles in MA, Hammond Castle was quite interesting. Thanks for the vid😊

The wicked Book store might have my mothers poetry book in it. She lived in Mass till she passed away in 2021. Her book was published in 2018. Her book is based on indigenous tales called Dancing in the Brazen Moon. If someone has it’s a very rare find as there where only hundreds published. She was an amazing woman and her dream was to have a poetry book published and the next one was to collaborate with me in children’s poetry story book about a dragon that helped bees run a honey business. It was to teach kids about collaborating with others and how everyone has a unique set of talents to make one thing which was honey in that case. I was suppose to create the illustrations

Okay this is a super long post.....but worth the read 😊 I lived in Savannah, GA and it certainly has not only a large chunk of US history, it is hands down the most scenic place I've ever lived. Only place I've had real haunted experiences. I worked at the Marriott hotel on River St in Savannah, so I had to learn about the history and everything to do for tourists, as well as the best restaurants. Food, ghosts, history, mysterious scenery, architecture, art.....Savannah has it all!! 🍴😋👻🤠🌄⛲🌉🎭🎨 Just for some perspective, I've lived in 6 different states (non-military....just by choice). Lived on the coast of Virginia (& family all across the state), Georgia (Atlanta & Savannah), Florida (Boca Raton & Delray Beach with family in Jacksonville), Texas (Houston), Rhode Island, and now Massachusetts. I've visited over half of the country thanks to having a large family spread all across, and I've traveled up and down the east coast from Florida to Maine dozens of times. Every place I've visited has had its own beauty in one way or another. The only cities to disappoint were ones that I had high expectations or standards set before going. Dulling the hype has been key and helps to appreciate more. Websites can be misleading..... Currently living in Mass, I have to say, has only upped my level of appreciation for history, architecture, the arts, as well as seafood (consider I was vegan for a while...so I'm very picky about freshness of produce and sensitive to flavors of any animal products that I consume). And I'm a coffee/tea enthusiast....to say the least 😄Unfortunately for finances, I have an expensive palate! 🤑😂😂 So much history to appreciate and incredible architecture, as well as some very delicious foods (had to research as I was spoiled with drool-worthy foods in ATL and SAV....worth the search!) The architecture is stunning, and Salem in the fall (late OCT-early NOV) is cinema-level breathtaking! I read all of the reviews that are on here and locals gave AMAZING tips as to how to enjoy Salem. One listed the best restaurants, another listed the best places to explore and the best times to visit depending on what vibes you are looking for. I totally understand going somewhere and not having the best time despite hearing about others wonderful experiences. It can really ruin your view/perspective of the location. Salem has been mega-hyped from movies and the witch trials.....not unlike Savannah, GA (with movies). But there is a difference in hospitality. Salem is not going to give you witchy Hocus Pocus vibes all year.....as it is, underneath the hype, a historical (not the original) town that is expensive to keep running, with one month out of the whole year as the busy season. Very different from other touristy cities, making the rest of the year feel like a tourist trap. Salem has had to lean into the fantasy of witches to keep the city running, and prices can be ridiculous since so many people are seeking that Halloween-esque fantasy. However, if you really listen to locals verses people who just visit Salem, your experience can shift from decent to bucket list worthy. I understand if you never have a desire to revisit, as your overall experience with your group was sub-par. But if you decide to, by chance, it would be exciting to be able to compare it to your first visit! Consider Savannah, GA.....really worth your time. European tourists always told us it was their #1 bucket list city in the US!!! Thank you for your video!👻🖤🖤🖤

Who told you Salem was a "Bucketlist experience"? You should out them so we can all shame them. Only the real die hard fans and residents do Salem in October. How do I know? I lived there for a year. I also grew up 10 miles south. We went to the Salem Witch Museum during a class trip. I went outside during the middle of it, bored out of my head. I used to live off Derby St, so I know a bit about the middle of the action. Pickering Wharf is great, but bring your checkbook!!!!!!. The rest of the stuff? Tourist fluff. Maybe I'm not that big a fan? I dated a witch once, but she was from somewhere south of Salem. LOL

We loved Salem! I think you were unlucky with the restaurant you went. In Gulu Gulu we eat warm sandwiches and it was great. We ate in other places like Sea Level Oyster Bar, Finz Seafood & Grill and food was delicious! Also had breakfast at Red’s Sandwich Shop and was reasonable and good. Restaurants also offer vegan options. Like you said some places may be a hit or miss depending the food you order and the staff. You have to visit again to try other restaurants . I agree hotels are expensive, but you have to go in a month that is NOT that high. SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER IS REALLY HIGH because people visit more in those months, especially with the festivals and vendors in costume etc .Besides the Museum there are other Historical places to visit that are great. I hope you give SALEM ANOTHER TRY!!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but so far as a 17th century house being “ on brand” goes? Really? Have you no appreciation for architecture or social history? Just how many structures of that age, in that state of preservation do you think are still extant in this country? The house is critical as the only surviving structure directly associated with the trials. The kitchy junk shops and tourist clip joints that bill themselves as “ museums” notwithstanding, the Peabody Essex and the architectural walking tours of Salem they provide are worth the trip alone. Salem will remain important to the nation’s history long after the horror film fans, junk shops and rubber chicken circuit move along. Come for the architectural and social history; if you see crowds of gawkers dressed for Halloween in the middle of June….walk away. There are better things to see in Salem.

Next time you should maybe do some reading before just deciding to go. One simple internet search would’ve given you all of the must see places in Salem including the museums. Someone as chronically online as you really could’ve taken five seconds to search that. Just some helpful feedback for next time you decide to visit somewhere.

I was thinking the same thing. She literally went without any knowledge of what to do or where to go. She seemed to rely solely on Yelp, which is not going to give good advice for Salem, as the reviews are done by other tourists who just go for bucket list reasons without actually knowing anything about the place. Most of them are likely disappointed too for the same reasons.

We went for the history back in the early 70s, when the town was untainted by all the "witch" stuff. We toured the museums, the grounds, ate in the restaurants, enjoyed the views, bought stuff in the stores. No crowds, no hoop-la. Just beauty and history and - those accents!! So cool! You, my dear, concentrated too much, perhaps, on finding a Potter-world experience. Your loss, I'm afraid.

There are tons of souvenir shops with items made by locals. It seems like she wasn't there long, maybe she just didn't like it. But she was acting like a tourist, not someone who is really interested in understanding the history and culture. What she failed to say (because she probably didn't care to notice) is that there is a beam of wood from the original jailhouse at the Salem Witch Museum. You want local handmade candles? Go to Witch City Wicks. The place is so much more than this dinky video.

I have done a fair amount of traveling, and I have found that the more ‘expectations’ I put on a place, the more disappointing it turns out to be. (Same for books and movies btw). So, for future reference maybe, try not to build things up in your mind so much and just let it play out. Sounds like this trip would have been bad regardless, but it’s worth a shot in future. Thanks for the review though! I did get great information from you! ❤

Hello Miss I just watched your video about Salem Mass I am a tour guide out of Albany that would bring bus loads of people there for the month of October so I have studied this place I know it pretty much inside and out the man that was in your video that said that he did not know a lot about Salem OR the witch trials and what it was all about you missed the whole place called Gallows Hill theater on l y n d e Street it is a live little play for I think $8 and it tells you the whole story in 20 minutes The Witches dungeon you went to is part of three things that are owned by the same woman and that is just a tourist trap the witch Museum you went to the witches dungeon and they also own a pirate's Museum they all stink you never went down to the water and on the water right in the bay there's a real pirates Museum and that's what it's listed as real pirates Museum about the real history of a real pirate ship and his mates originally from Salem the cemetery you were in you seem to know that that really wasn't where the witches are buried they're buried just outside of Salem in the town of Peabody behind the CVS you cannot get up on the hill where they were actually hung it's been fenced off due to vandalism but there is a whole Memorial at the base of that hill with all the girls names that were hung the restaurant you went to again you didn't do any down at the water there's a great one called longboards pricing okay the little cafe you ain't in with the coffee or the cappuccinos you had right next door was one called the luncheonette that's the better one for food you hit some of the stores but there's a much better book store down by the water and there's also the oldest candy store in America across from the House of Seven Gables again at the bay no you do not ever want to go to Salem in October it is insane lines are long you can't get in stores you can't get in restaurants so actually the time of year that you went was absolutely perfect you also were standing right near the Samantha Stevens statue and if you looked behind her over to the right there's a store called hex there's also a vampire store right next to that those stores are outstanding there's a apothecary store at the other end of the square that was Derby square and that was Derby square that your restaurant with coffee was in and the bakery that you liked rosedale's awesome absolutely fantastic pick it's too bad that you didn't get anything out of there on the back side of that mall going out the door on the other side of it is a store when you go outside called die with your boots on that is phenomenal and a trolley ride through Salem would have probably been good for you because the trolley gives you all kinds of information and it drives you all around Salem I think where you were getting most of your information from you may have wanted to go a little bit deeper or maybe spoke with somebody like myself that's been a tour guide through Salem to help you out because as in any tourist spot there is the Bad and the good

I stopped going every year because Ive done everything but also because the city of Salem needs to do better, especially with the Witch City Mall. my advice to anyone is just stay there for 1-2 days and plan your trip ahead of time! I want to offer a friendly counterpoint to this video. I visit Salem in August every year, and suggest the following: - Rent an airbnb near the coast and treat Salem like an afternoon/evening adventure. (Amazing beaches and orchards await!) - Research extensively before you go-don’t take a friend’s word for it, google menus, interior photos (sorry but lots of tvs is an obvious red flag), vids, etc-and select only the top 1-3 things you want to do. - My recs = Settler for dinner (pricey but actually memorable, chef-y food), Coven’s Cottage to scratch the witch itch, Emporium 32 for funsies, the thorn tree in the back of the Ropes garden if you’re an actual witch and want to hang with a local spirit. You’ll be left feeling like you had a short whimsical romp, rather than an underwhelming slog.

Christmas in Salem can be enchanting. For architecture check out the McIntyre houses, check out the fireplace carving and get the related stories. The speakeasy tunnels are probably not open... As a technical detail, after killing a few good folks it was determined that there were no witches in Salem.
