"This is so incredible. I'm having to shut off the part of my brain that worries about crap." How many opportunities do we miss because of that second sentence? I grew up loving planes. Had the balsa wood gliders and rubber band powered stuff. But when I had my first chance to fly at 7 it scared the crap out of me. A short hop from DFW to SAT in a 737. I cried until my Mom let me put the window down. I got guts enough to open it again as we were landing. Fast forward to about 10. Got to fly front seat in a little plane. It took all I had to get in it. I loved it except I was scared to death. They asked me to take the controls and I couldn't do it. Fast forward to a lot of flights and years later and now I want to do this stuff. Seeing that some pilots still have the same fears is encouraging. Somehow they learn to turn off the part of the brain that worries about stuff that isn't likely to happen. I will add that I did turn off that part of my brain long enough to get hired where I work today. It paid off pretty good for me. Some day when you feel like making a Just Plabe Serious video, tell us how you turn off the part of the brain that worries about crap.

New PPG equipment and training runs you 15k and can go as high as 20k. The average cost of training is 2k an average ppg set up costs 8k, 1k for a reserve. 500 for a low end helmet and radio. A decent wing which is the most important thing is about 4K.

You're pretty close there....I paid 8.5k for new parajet maverick, 3500 for new ozone roadster 3, thats with a discount from training which was 2750....reserve 875.....I wouldn't call 500 for helmet low end. Falls from 30 or 40 feet and up the outcome would be the same, so going higher would not really make it any less risk. Maybe it would lower risk the mind doesn't work that way. I tired to talk my wife into getting one of these she loves parasailing behind a boat which she thinks is so much more safer then a paramotor. I tired to tell her it's no different just being towed up over water wont make any difference when you get up high. You bring something up as social media has been doing a great job of adding more people to aviation including paramotoring I get concerned about a collision between aircraft and one of these. One of the reasons held me back from paramotoring is they are very sensitive to weather, and bumpy air.
@SmittySmithsonite3 жыл бұрын
I keep a strobe going on mine any time I'm flying. Not a requirement, but I don't want to tangle with a fixed wing going anywhere from 120 to 250 MPH! Would ruin both our days badly. I've seen a few zip by, but no closer than 1,500 feet horizontally. In the weather we fly in, we're very visible. I chose a bright green wing to be more visible no matter what angle I'm viewed from. They're definitely sensitive to weather, but as you gain experience, you'll be able to handle rougher conditions, although that's not much fun (at least to me). My very first flight I was "para-parked" - winds were exactly the same as my forward speed, so I hovered over a farm house like a helicopter for a few minutes, lol. I had to descend into calmer air to make any forward progress. It's a ton of fun, though. So glad I got into this hobby! I can't think of a single reason not to get into it (aside from money, if that's a factor). I'd wager it's the safest form of aviation out there. Only way to stall the wing is by yanking lines, or the brake toggles down to your waist. It inherently wants to fly, and will with little pilot input.
