My theory is: Gillion was chosen to be the champion which defends his city/triton "tribe" (if you look up Tritons, there is actually mentioned that instead of armies fighting in war, they each choose a champion to fight for their land). Maybe Gill couldn't defeat the enemy and didn't get good feedback from his people? There's so many hints leading to a specific prophecy/destiny, even his sister said he shouldn't listen to the elders and their prophecy. To add the part of his parents leaving him: Maybe they were dissapointed? Or they wanted him to train and prepare instead of him being with them? He left his sister who probably was really important to him, like the only close family member? Maybe she even died? Maybe he felt like he couldn't protect her from the evil and failed her? Maybe he thinks that he should've died instead of her? -> Possibly also the reasons why is so persistant on getting infront of his friends to protect them (If you look on the page about Tritons again lmao, you'll see that 'Triton' literally translates to 'guardian' in their language :))

It was implied that he is the "chosen one" from the undersea, and he was supposed to do something, but he either forgot or it wasn't made clear to him what he needed to do, so he just started to drift, until the crew found him.
