This movie is based on the short-lived TV show, "Police Squad!" which only ran for 6 episodes (all hilarious). But, the network recognized its potential as a movie and so gave the go-ahead to write the script. As Leslie Nielson pointed out, the most likely reason that it failed as a TV show is because it really requires you to pay attention at all times to get all the jokes, unlike most TV shows that can be playing almost in the background and you can still follow what's going on. As a movie you will have your full attention on it so it works.

They really need to make more movies like this. The slapstick visuals, combined with the deadpan deliveries..... I saw this movie when it came out at the theater in 1988 with my Dad when I was 11 years old and we both about died in our chairs along with every other person in that theater, and I still die every time I watch it. It's a movie you can watch a hundred times and laugh just as hard as the first time! A true classic. Leslie is a legend. Six episodes actually.
