The Zucker brothers and Jim Abrams are brilliant writers who use a lot of “literal” humor. Ludwig is Ricard Montalban, a distinguished and actor famous as Khan in Star Trek and Mr. Rhoark from Fantasy Island. The series Police Squad came out soon after Airplane! in the early 80s. It only last six episodes because the humor was too massive and fast for TV. There were so many gags in every scene, usually in the background, that many never caught half of them except in reruns. So they grew Police Squad to the big screen as The Naked Gun, which allowed a captive audience to catch many more. And like Airplane! well-known actors were used who played the ludicrous scenes straight as if playing a serious role, which makes it hilarious. The movies Airplane! and Naked Gun started new careers for Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Neilsen, who were considered “serious” actors before that. To see Leslie in a serious, classic role (and with dark hair no less) watch the 1956 sci-fi flick Forbidden Planet. It still holds up well even today.

8:36 That's a send-up of the Charles Bronson/Lee Remick film "Telefon" where the original scene was almost perfectly recreated. Ludwig was played by Ricardo Montalban, the last dancing star with MGM just when the big musical films (think Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, etc) were getting out of fashion, but did a lot of television and film roles nonetheless.

Leslie Nielsen for decades played very dramatic roles, usually as a heavy. (bad guy) Many actors and crew attested to fact ,that off camera, Nielsen was quite funny, as was a real life practical joker. When he played the doctor in "Airplane" in 1980, he was so good in that comedy, that it launched a very popular string of comedy hit movies, with his "Naked Gun movies the most popular. He became a Superstar comedy actor, late in his career. For a look at one of his good dramatic performances, check out the early Scify hit " Forbidden Planet," made in 1956.

I have always loved this movie, absolutely hysterical. Weird fact about this movie, it was literally the last thing Simpson did before committing the Brentwood murders. He had finished shooting just hours before the events in Brentwood starting to happen. My friends and I often argued that Simpson absolutely loved being a celebrity, but maybe he did not like being the brunt of jokes so much. Definitely when it came to his wife, anyway. He was kind of an Egomaniac.

All 3 movies were terrific. Hope you guys do the other ones. Yes the Angels were the California Angels for the longest time before being renamed the Los Angeles Angels despite the fact they still play in Anaheim.

The actor who played Ludwig was Ricardo Montalban. His most famous role is in the star trek original serie in one episode he played a genetically enhanced human from the 20th century who tries to take over the enterprise named Khan, and they brought him back for the 1982 second movie in the star trek franchise: The Wrath of Khan. Leslie Nielsen, was up to the 70's largely a serious actor and with airplane and police squad people discovered his off beat, straight face delivery in humour and untill his death he mostly did comedies and he enjoyed it too. Leslie Nielsen was easily one of the funniest guy ever. Of course from the abrams and zucker team also VERY funny (and what i consider their best movie), is Top Secret, starring Val Kilmer and is a parody of spy and rock and roll movies. It is so good because at any given moment there is at least two or three jokes in a scene, the one told and usually in parrallel, a visual gag in the background. Super funny. Also worth watching from the same team is Ruthless People. Very different, not at all a sight gag comedy but a straight one but it has Danny DeVito, Beth Midler and Bill Pullman and DeVito and Midler are just hilarious.

I like how you connected the jokes where Drebin walks around the wall and when Ludwig shakes the dummy of Jane around. I think they're both jokes about how "fake" movies can be. We forget that movies are fake when we're watching them. But these scenes remind us that we're watching something artificially constructed by making the fakeness obvious. So, to me, they're jokes that make fun of the fact that this is just a movie.

The Zucker bros had a method to their jokes. If the joke wasn't happening in front of the camera then there is probably one in the background somewhere. Have you guys watched Top Secret? You will like that one too.

Hopefully you watched the credits as there are many puns and jokes and whatnot within the credit scroll. Ludwig is Ricardo Montalban (Fantasy Island and Star Trek's Kahn in Wrath of Kahn are probably his two most popular roles).

My father and I watched all 6 episodes of Police Squad when it was on television. One thing they did, that I did not understand till years later, is each episode they would introduce a famous actor, like William Shatner, as a special guest and in the introduction that actor would get killed off, so they would not actually be in the episode.

I love his laugh too Samantha, it is adorable and very infectious. Love Leslie Neilson as well and had a good career as a serious actor before his sense of humor was showcased. The way he plays these comedic roles in a very serious way is genius and hilarious.
