Hannah pointed out exactly what made me so frustrated with this. Carrie is condemned and judged as evil and nothing is said about the extreme bullying and the insanity of her mother that drove her to finally break.
@julietfischer5056 Жыл бұрын
Even today, bullying is downplayed. Back in the 1970s, it was something kids were expected to deal with, and teachers could only do so much if the parents didn't see a problem. I doubt anybody knew just how disturbed and abusive Mrs. White was. Neighbors and coworkers knew her as the crazy fanatical Christian, so they had as little to do with her as possible. Carrie was fed, clothed, clean, and not coming to school with odd bruises or cuts. She was the 'weird' kid that people picked on.
@kennethmarrow313111 ай бұрын
Lots of children as well as adults are bullied on a daily basis, but that does not entitle someone to torch an entire gymnasium full of adolescents to death. Carrie is a sick demented psychopath and anyone who co-signs to this lunacy is just as loony tunes as she is?!

Tommy and Sue were never in on it, they were really trying to be nice. Also not everybody was in on it, only Chris, Billy, Norma and they're friends. If you notice, not everybody laughed when they pranked her and Tommy got knocked out. Everybody laughing at her afterwards was all in Carrie's head.
@ericjette2435 Жыл бұрын
That's an important point. Many people only notice the part where everyone (including the gym teacher) seems to be laughing at Carrie, and miss the fact that it's mostly in Carrie's head. I think some of the "edited for television" versions of the movie are cut in such a way that it seems like everyone really is laughing at poor Carrie.

I’ll put it this way: When I am physically drained from mental health exhaustion, the first thing I do is drink a glass of water and then take a shower. Honestly, dehydration sneaks up on you and needing a shower does too. These things will NOT magically cure your mental health, but they can make you feel a little better and sometimes that little boost can make a real difference. Kind of like taking medicine for a cold won’t cure the cold, but can help you live with it. Getting some exercise helps too, but sometimes that’s physically impossible when it’s bad. Maybe just a walk around the block or your backyard. I really hope you can recover. You’re very much not alone.

Not only did Carrie kill everyone at the high school, but she also unleashed destruction upon most of the town and its inhabitants on her way home in the book. Carrie, Stephen King's first novel, achieved tremendous success, especially after its film adaptation. While many of King's works feature bullies, Carrie delves into themes of puberty and abuse. What you two are not comprehending that this behavior (slapping women/girls, bullying, even the clothes) was normal 1970's American culture. The draws for this movie were John Travolta (who was a prominent TV actor in a show called Welcome Back Kotter) and William Katt - Tommy (who was our Greatest American Hero actor). In my school - it was the job of the assistant principal to punish students - slapping, paddling etc. This wasn't stopped until years later. And there are a MILLION Hollywood movies where women were slapped when they got "hysterical." Thus that scene in Airplane where they line up to slap that woman.
@ericjette2435 Жыл бұрын
Agreed on all points. Also, at the time it was widely believed at the time that if someone got hysterical, you needed to "snap them out of it" before they "made themselves sick." This applied to children as well as women. (For example, when a young kid gets very upset, they may start hyperventilating.) In such cases, slapping them wasn't really meant to hurt them, it was meant to shock them out of their hysteria and get them to catch their breath and start breathing normally. A less violent method was to throw a glass of cold water in their face (also a method for reviving an unconscious person) or to drag them into the bathroom and dunk their head into a sink full of cold water. I honestly have no idea if any of these methods have any validity or what is now considered to be the correct method to calm down a person who has become hysterical.

Carrie is the victim from beginning to end and not just from the bullying at school and the abuse at home but also from her telekinetic abilities as well. The way I see it, when the pig's blood is dumped on her, Carrie went into a state of shock and hallucinated that everyone was laughing at her while hearing her mum's voice repeating in her head. From then on, she lost control and went into a trance while her telekinesis took over. It's still sad that Carrie dies at the end in the prayer closet while her house crumbles around her. That St Sebastian statue still gives me the creeps with it's eyes all lit up like that.

In the book by the time they're on the stage Carrie has like a telepathic kind of connection with Tommy so she knows he wasn't in on it and also that he died (it's actually the moment he dies that she totally snaps as he was the last positive connection she had to anyone*) *she doesn't know the Sue wasn't in on it

Sue really did want to help Carrie. It was just bad timing that she chose to help her while the other kids were planning to prank her. Sue and Tommy got screwed by those bullies when they had good intentions. Not sure why he kissed Carrie though but either way they were doomed when that bucket fell. i must recommend The Lost Boys too. Legendary film from the 80s. Its a thriller film I'd say with a huge presence of character.. or if you want something hilarious the first National Lampoons Vacation is freaking hilarious.. and because its an older film the jokes go pretty far! Thanks for reacting to the older films! They don't make them like they used to!

This is waaay late, but if anyone is wondering why Tommy kissed Carrie, it's because in the book he found himself starting to fall in love with her during the prom. And Carrie does find out that Sue and Tommy weren't part of the prank. Sue found Carrie and gave her permission to look in her mind for the truth.

This movie is one of my all time favorites because it resonates with me in a lot of ways. It sounds weird but in many ways i was Carrie. I have been bullied myself throughout most of my childhood. So i know what it is to be angry at the world, being immensly depressed and having suicidal thoughts. I got past all of that obviously but i can relate to Carrie in soooo many ways.

First time watching you guys, and I loved it! I think Hannah is an empathetic genius, not only was she calling out what was going to happen, but she was so in tune with what the girl “clique” was about. When she looks at Ash and says, “ You don’t fully understand how horrific this is”, Ash like me, a man, we find that scenario horrible, but we would never fully comprehend how soul breaking that must be. A few points I’d like to make: 1. The slap given to Carrie by the teacher was completely reasonable, at the time, to help someone who was hysterical to snap out of it. 2. In the book, which I find to not be as good as the movie, Carrie destroys the town. The movie didn’t have the budget for that. 3. Both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars for their performances, a very rare thing for a horror movie. 4. Yes, Stephen King’s wife made him rescue the book from the bin, and informed him that there were feminine hygiene product dispensers in girls locker rooms, something that he and I would guess most guys didn’t know. All in all, you guys are excellent at this, I have subscribed. 👍👍👍👍

In the book, King describes the bucket as being made of galvanized steel. That's a heavy duty metal and a long way from the garden store variety bucket. So, yes, Tommy would definitely have been knocked out.

Another great reaction! I read the book and first watched Carrie years ago & I still haven’t fully reconciled my feelings/opinions on Carrie herself. I feel the utmost sympathy for her having been ostracised her whole life but then, obviously, the mass murder. I think ultimately what I take away from this though is that bullying never just affects the victim, it’ll ripple out and hurt so many others too.
@julietfischer5056 Жыл бұрын
Even the bullies are harmed. Even if they don't end up in prison, they have attitudes they'll take into adulthood with them. Every relationship will be tainted by their need to dominate or seem tough and strong. No real friends, loveless and dysfunctional (if not abusive) marriages, and empty lives.
@kiranjitKaur616 ай бұрын
Not necessarily so. Bullies may well be attracted unto other bullies and as such their personal relationship may be exciting and fulfilling.

Fun Fact 1: _Carrie_ and _Star Wars_ (1977) were cast from the same pool of actors. There's footage floating around the internet of Sissy Spacek reading for Princess Leia, and William Katt (Tommy) reading for Luke Skywalker. Fun Fact 2: A musical of _Carrie_ premiered on Broadway in 1988, with Betty Buckley (Miss Collins) playing Margaret White. Despite standout performances by Buckley and Linzi Hateley, who played Carrie, the show overall was a disaster and closed after just five performances. 24 years later, a heavily revised version of the musical premiered Off-Broadway, and has enjoyed many productions since, especially in high schools.

14:00 what you have to understand is that the gym teacher would NEVER get done for that back then. It was standard discipline. I went to school in that era, and teachers/principals could spank you, paddle you, slap you if you got out of line. We knew not to fuck with them! I once saw a kid I knew and his friend (both about 17) make fun of a teacher's salt-and-pepper mustache. The guy I knew said loudly "I think it's a fungus myself!" as the teacher came down the hall. The teacher grabbed him, shoved him across the hall, and slammed him against the lockers by the shoulders. Told him to shut the hell up, and he did. NOTHING happened to the teacher because of that, because it's the way things were. From what I hear about schools today, I'm not so sure it was a bad thing.

This was Stephen King's 1st novel & movie adaptation. In the book, a group of investigators known as the Carrie White Committee/Council were trying to get down to what lead up to the fire @ the prom & how it was thought Carrie was responsible. Only a handful of people got out. Supposedly Carrie got her ability from her father. Her father went out for cigarettes & never came back. The book gives u more background on Carrie. She had abilities since she was little. There is a part in the book that describes a 6yr old or maybe 8yr old Carrie who was curious about a teenage girl next door sunbathing in a bikini/topless. Carrie's mom came out of the house & slapped the crap out of Carrie for looking @ the older girl's dirty pillows & woman's body. Because Carrie was so upset & trying to defend herself she made it rain rocks. Her mother told her never to do that again because that was the way of the devil. So, Carrie repressed her powers. But, being bullied caused her abilities to resurface. At the end in the book, Carrie made it rain rocks again, but these were the size of large rocks & boulders, & buried herself, her mom & the house under the stones. In the book, it is made a bit clearer that Sue was just trying to do something nice for Carrie by telling Tommy to take her to prom. Sue felt bad for joining in w/the others when Carrie got her period. O, the teacher giving a couple of slaps, back in the day it had been known to happen. Corporal punishment was allowed. When the PE teacher slapped Carrie, it wasn't to be cruel, but to get her out of hysterics. Her smacking Chris, that was a punishment. Even though corporal punishment had been outlawed in the state of California sometime in the early/mid 1970s, I think, my 1st grade teacher didn't get the memo. I was a 6yr old in 1st grade from 1978 to 1979. For any kind of infraction of her rules, she would yank u up out of your chair, take u over to her desk in front of the class, & swat u 3 times w/a wooden paddle. Heaven forbid u cry. If u did cry, then u would be taunted by your classmates w/the chant "Cry baby, cry baby." Yes, I had traumatic school experiences. The reason why Stephen King is my favorite author is because I can relate to his main characters & see a lot of my own experiences w/bullies & supernatural stuff. Hannah, u need to try & contol your outrage. U get so fed up & angry @ what u r watching that I can picture u throwing things across the room.😄 I'm glad u r such a caring person.😊 Anyway, I did enjoy your reaction, & I am looking forward to the next.

13:38 If that slap looked real to you it's because it WAS real, director Brian de-palma wanted the reaction to the slap to be as real as possible so he had Betty Buckley slap Nancy Allen FOR REAL a whole bunch of times, exactly how many times depends on who you ask, one of the film's editors said it was ten times, according to Betty it was twelve, and according to Nancy herself she was slapped TWENTY NINE TIMES, but however many times it was Nancy apparently didn't hold it against Brian De-Palma as she married him 3 years later.

My mother told me that teacher's were allowed to hit students back then. And bullying was quite violent as well and sometimes teachers told you to suck it up. Also there were no laws against spousal abuse so you can slap your girlfriend or wife and not get in trouble as well.
@ericjette2435 Жыл бұрын
Back then many teachers had little or no sympathy for bullied kids. (Many of them were bullies themselves.) Even the teachers and parents that had sympathy for bullied kids honestly thought that if they interfered, they'd only make things worse for the bullied kid. (I'm not sure they were wrong.) Most of them followed the philosophy that bullies are everywhere, so kids need to learn how to stand up for themselves, and the sooner the better, otherwise they'd be bullied their whole lives.
