This movie is the perfect showcase of what happens when you give bunch of martial artists with more than 10 years of real fight experience an acting lesson and put them in a movie, as opposed to american action movies where hollywood gives actors that have no or minimal real fight experience with few months of martial arts training and put them in a movie.

This is a great movie. The Raid 2 is also insane. You got to watch Dredd with Karl Urban. AWESOME. Reminds me a little of this one in regards to being lock downed inside a big compound of villains.

I think Ash might need new pants after this one, especially the door part. The Director, Cinematographer and Martial Artists are an unbeatable team in this. This movie couldn't exist without those other movies, and I doubt anyone on the team would say they made a better movie than Enter the Dragon etc! But I think this movie shows more of what is possible with modern movie techniques and martial arts. Consider also that they actually choreographed an eye-popping fight scene, but it was too good - so they wanted to save it until they had a bigger movie to put it in. That movie is Raid 2. The Kitchen Fight is the best fight scene I've ever watched for pure action, bar none. Raid 2 isn't as tight a movie as this one, but it's still an excellent movie and well worth the watch. The car cinematography as well is unbelievable, you'll go mad trying to work out how they did it. Also glad you watched it with subtitles!

There's an even better fight in The Raid 2... You'll know it when you see it, since it sounds like you're already planning to see it. Another suggestion: Man of Tai Chi. It hits a few of your happy spots: martial arts, and your personal man-crush, Keanu Reeves. ;) It's actually the first movie Keanu directed, a fulfillment of a promise he'd made to Tiger Chen, the guy who trained him for the fight scenes in The Matrix. Keanu liked him so much, he promised to see him star in a movie. Took him over a decade, but Keanu eventually got Man of Tai Chi made to fulfill that promise, because he's as classy as he is badass. But, yeah, the Raid movies are... special degree of intense.

Do i think the raid is the best martial-art movie? No. Do i think its on par with bloodsport, enter the dragon, undisputed 2, ong-bak etc? Yes, i do. Its one of the best. The level where you cant really decide what is better. I love those movie to death.

Gareth left a lot of rooms for the actors to improvise, especially Iko and Yayan (right hand man) I believe they created most moves themselves, Gareth knew these are just phenomenal fighters so like any sane directors would do he gave the creative freedom. And the result is this brutal yet beautiful masterpiece.
