@@prometheus705 It's become trendy to say Fight Club is overrated, but that film is wide open to multiple levels of interpretation, with each level being host to people who look down on the lower academic levels (often without seeing the levels above them, where other academics are looking down on them, too). And at the end of the day, the author was right about there being virtually no movies that really speak on the male experience. There are endless streams of movies that show what a "real man" ought to be (hero, provider, fighter, savior, good father, etc.), and there are men who either do or don't fill those ideal roles (one protagonist who learns something), but there aren't any movies that really speak on how men think of themselves and each other as they grow through adulthood. Every year, for women, there are "Joy Luck Clubs" or "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantses" or "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"... for men, it stops after coming-of-age movies like American Pie and then poof... we're all Bruce Willis saving a skyscraper or a bumbling dad learning to not suck at life. So yeah, people will criticize Fight Club for the fact that men really identify with it on a deep level (for reasons they may not be able to fully verbalize), but the fact that it does is something of a statement itself.

@@JohnnyGingy Again, that comes from emotion, not logic. If a person demonstrates a fundamental change in their behavior and shows they have reformed and overcome whatever motivated the hateful acts they committed in their past, they should be forgiven and allowed to try. I don't think you understand what being locked up is really like, and I hope you never do. People who glibly think it's a good idea to lock people up for the rest of their lives do so from a standpoint of pure emotion. We don't, and never have, thrown people in jail to simply punish them. That's not what the justice system is designed for. The goal is to teaech a lesson, yes, and that lesson is in the loss of fundamental freedom for a short time. The other more important goal is to reform individuals so that they can come back into society as productive members. That's exactly what happened here. Why are you bringing up something that wasn't in the film to support the claim? Edward Norton, who edited the release version of the movie, totally disagreed with that ending, which is why it isn't in the movie. Nearly everyone that watches this movie skips over the overt Black racism portrayed and where, at least according to the movie, the racial animosity was borne out of. Derek's firefighting father was killed by Black people while putting out a house fire in a Black neighborhood. And his father was pissed about White firefighters being passed over for promotion because of affirmative action. At no point in the movie do we ever see Danny do anything to anyone, yet he was racially bullied in the bathroom in the beginning and killed in the end. Also, the White kid in the beginning of the movie is thrown to the bathroom floor and kicked twice in the stomach while on the ground. So there was really nothing Danny could have done in his life that would have saved him from being the victim of racists.

@@jongordon7914 I watched the movie, so idk why you’re telling me this. Sure there was racism on both sides. But I don’t really see the point of typing all that out. His brother is in prison for a hate crime for which Danny obviously shows no remorse, and still runs with the same crowd. I distinctly remember him blowing smoke (almost as disrespectful as spitting in someone’s face) in some dudes faces in the same bathroom he got killed. There was bad blood on all sides. This weirdly sounds like you’re trying to justify something here when there’s almost nothing in this movie that can be justified. Originally, the movie was supposed to end with Derek going back to his old friends after his brother is killed. Edward Norton hated the ending so much, he re-edited the entire thing and added like 20 minutes of run time to the film. Norton's ending, while still rather bleak, is much more hopeful. its so hard to watch people react to this movie because so many people miss the point of, both sides are wrong, and in the end they are just scapegoating the real issue. the teachers comment about “Has anything you’ve done, made your life better?” is applicable to both sides of the argument. Derek is wrong, the parents are wrong. Real change comes from within. You need to be the change you want in the world, everything else is superficial sophistry. This movie is always relevant because people keep shifting blame, creating new scapegoats, and in the end, bathe in their own victimhood, real or imagined.

Danny was killed because he "disrespected" that same boy that killed him earlier in the movie. He and his buddies were beating up that dorky looking white kid in the bathroom and Danny kind of stopped them by just standing up to them and being a smartass. So he was killed for something really insignificant compared to a lot of things Derek did in his past. I think it was trying to show how even a little bit of hate can ultimately destroy you. In Danny's case he lost his life because of that other boy's hate just like the men Derek killed lost their lives because of Derek's hate. Its viscous cycle of hate !

One of the good things about the ending is it forces you to choose - Did Derek stand true to his new values and remain morally correct? Or did his brother’s death push him back over the edge?
@Zero88802 жыл бұрын
The director's original vision was having Derek shaving his head at the end of the movie and reverting to his Neo Nazi ways. Racism is quite literally just one manifestation of tribalism-the propensity to differentiate an “in group” vs “out group”. Our impulses can and often should help guide our decisions, but we should be making those decisions consciously. And yes, there are any number of “what about in situation A with no time for reacting, etc etc”…but to focus on those, I feel, is to ignore the overwhelming majority of instances in which these instincts may come into play.
@fanta48972 жыл бұрын
@@thefourshowflip The point of those instincts is that they take over control. If they wouldn't have that ability they'd be useless. Yes they are primarily good for situations in which you need to act fast, but honestly, even in situations when you have a lot of time, there is so much information that is being processed in your brain that instinct can help you where will would fail you. Situations where it pays of to be distrustful, more prone to anger, etc. without any normaly observable reason.

But it always messes with my head a little cause they are identical in this film. Which we both happen to love, and consider an extremely important, masterful work of filmmaking that everyone should see at least once in their life. Especially young teens. So impactful and so needed. Maybe now more than ever. We cried together when we both watched it. But it still messes with me a bit when I see Ed Norton in this. Still, they were even then trying to get around each other and the alliance pretty much collapsed after WWII. Indeed, the Nazis were not Communists. And they were not socialists either, regardless of the word "socialist" being in their name. Some people like to claim that, but they are either mistaken or just deliberately lying.
