Some things you don't do for betterment of your life, but because you believe they're right thing to do. And so in this case, nationalist that gets harrassed for his opinions (there are many who recieved death threats, or who were thrown out of job or school because of their opinions, or who were out right attacked and killed or mutilated, like that guy in Germany few years back who got his ankles smashed by hammer) should answer that his choices didn't make his life better, but he doesn't neccessarily think about his life as the primary goal, and prefers having a worse life than giving up his opinions which he thinks are not only correct, but good and righteous.

@@JohnnyGingy Except for the very reason depicted in the movie. Derek was reformed when he got out. He had a completely changed outlook on life, and he was able to start making a positive influence on his family and brother. If he had been in jail for the rest of his life he likely would have gotten shanked in jail, his brother would have turned into a neo-nazi, and his family would have continued on the path of destruction. People really need to step back from these situations and realize that society should never let the seductive flavor of punative measures over-ride the whole point of prison. - Protect society from dangerous individuals, and more importantly REFORM those individuals.

@OpenMawProductions
@OpenMawProductions 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyGingy Again, that comes from emotion, not logic. If a person demonstrates a fundamental change in their behavior and shows they have reformed and overcome whatever motivated the hateful acts they committed in their past, they should be forgiven and allowed to try. I don't think you understand what being locked up is really like, and I hope you never do. People who glibly think it's a good idea to lock people up for the rest of their lives do so from a standpoint of pure emotion. We don't, and never have, thrown people in jail to simply punish them. That's not what the justice system is designed for. The goal is to teaech a lesson, yes, and that lesson is in the loss of fundamental freedom for a short time. The other more important goal is to reform individuals so that they can come back into society as productive members. That's exactly what happened here. Why are you bringing up something that wasn't in the film to support the claim? Edward Norton, who edited the release version of the movie, totally disagreed with that ending, which is why it isn't in the movie. As far as the movie is concerned we have no idea what happened after his brother died. None.

They took water from the grid, added minerals to the point where it wouldn't be legal to use in the taps. Mostly I'm just taking the mic, but have you ever tried a filter system? It still adds some cost on top of the taps, but is generally less damaging than bottled water.

@extantsanity

@@prometheus705 It's become trendy to say Fight Club is overrated, but that film is wide open to multiple levels of interpretation, with each level being host to people who look down on the lower academic levels (often without seeing the levels above them, where other academics are looking down on them, too). And at the end of the day, the author was right about there being virtually no movies that really speak on the male experience. There are endless streams of movies that show what a "real man" ought to be (hero, provider, fighter, savior, good father, etc.), and there are men who either do or don't fill those ideal roles (one protagonist who learns something), but there aren't any movies that really speak on how men think of themselves and each other as they grow through adulthood. Every year, for women, there are "Joy Luck Clubs" or "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantses" or "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"... for men, it stops after coming-of-age movies like American Pie and then poof... we're all Bruce Willis saving a skyscraper or a bumbling dad learning to not suck at life. So yeah, people will criticize Fight Club for the fact that men really identify with it on a deep level (for reasons they may not be able to fully verbalize), but the fact that it does is something of a statement itself.

Originally, the movie was supposed to end with Derek going back to his old friends after his brother is killed. Edward Norton hated the ending so much, he re-edited the entire thing and added like 20 minutes of run time to the film. Norton's ending, while still rather bleak, is much more hopeful. The final shot in the original was Edward Norton looking into a mirror, shaving his head. The director lost his shit over Norton's changes, disavowed the film entirely, and sued the studio for like $250 million.

I think the whole point of the movie is exactly what y’all were going back & forth about at the end. As human beings we have free will and can be as horrible or as great of a person as we want to be, and people do both. You can also decide to change at any moment and try to become a real man out of whatever monster lifestyle you were living. The only thing, like y’all said, your actions set other peoples actions in motion. And he was celebrated by the skinheads for those years he was locked up & couldn’t do anything about it. Once he gets out and starts trying to change, so many things are in motion that it’s just too late… Tragic but to me it’s a warning to live the right way all the time, and hopefully you don’t have to have some sort of epiphany to start doing right, because it could be too late by then. Your past can always catch up to you.

Nearly everyone that watches this movie skips over the overt Black racism portrayed and where, at least according to the movie, the racial animosity was borne out of. Derek's firefighting father was killed by Black people while putting out a house fire in a Black neighborhood. And his father was pissed about White firefighters being passed over for promotion because of affirmative action. At no point in the movie do we ever see Danny do anything to anyone, yet he was racially bullied in the bathroom in the beginning and killed in the end. Also, the White kid in the beginning of the movie is thrown to the bathroom floor and kicked twice in the stomach while on the ground. So there was really nothing Danny could have done in his life that would have saved him from being the victim of racists.

@@jongordon7914 I watched the movie, so idk why you’re telling me this. Sure there was racism on both sides. But I don’t really see the point of typing all that out. Racism doesn’t justify turning into a murdering racist yourself. Also, Danny wasn’t completely innocent. His brother is in prison for a hate crime for which Danny obviously shows no remorse, and still runs with the same crowd. I distinctly remember him blowing smoke (almost as disrespectful as spitting in someone’s face) in some dudes faces in the same bathroom he got killed. There was bad blood on all sides. This weirdly sounds like you’re trying to justify something here when there’s almost nothing in this movie that can be justified. The criminal lifestyle and bullshit on both sides is wrong, but I guess you needed that typed out explicitly to not feel attacked.

An important part of the film is that it could have been about Little Henry (the shooter at the end) & how he was being drawn into gang violence/culture, there were a few moments of foreshadowing with Danny meeting him after talking with Sweeney at the start & a little later on when Henry points him out to an older black man who was talking to him (The shooting was Henry's initiation into the gang, killing the brother of Derek Vinyard). So yes, the cycle continues & while the original ending had Derek going back to his old way, I prefer the more open ended finish of Danny's voiceover.

It's true. To listen to race-hustlers in America (of any skin color), you'd think there was more racism now than back in the 60's when there was literal segregation of blacks and whites. In reality, actual racism or racist acts are few and far between, yet some have been trained to think any slight against them (actual or perceived) is automatically racist (just as some women have been trained to do the same with the words "sexist" or "misogynist"), because that's what a race-hustler said on "the news."

And yes, there are any number of “what about in situation A with no time for reacting, etc etc”…but to focus on those, I feel, is to ignore the overwhelming majority of instances in which these instincts may come into play.

@@thefourshowflip The point of those instincts is that they take over control. If they wouldn't have that ability they'd be useless. Yes they are primarily good for situations in which you need to act fast, but honestly, even in situations when you have a lot of time, there is so much information that is being processed in your brain that instinct can help you where will would fail you. Situations where it pays of to be distrustful, more prone to anger, etc. without any normaly observable reason.
