Driving Downtown - Bronx New York City New York USA - Episode 40.
Starting Point: goo.gl/maps/8g... .
The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, within the U.S. state of New York.
The Bronx contains one of the five poorest Congressional Districts in the United States, the 15th, but its wide diversity also includes affluent, upper-income and middle-income neighborhoods such as Riverdale, Fieldston, Spuyten Duyvil, Schuylerville, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Morris Park and Country Club.[10][11] The Bronx, particularly the South Bronx, saw a sharp decline in population, livable housing, and the quality of life in the late 1960s and the 1970s, culminating in a wave of arson. Since then the communities have shown significant redevelopment starting in the late 1980s before picking up pace from the 1990s until today.
About a quarter of the Bronx's area is open space,[5] including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo in the borough's north and center. These open spaces are situated primarily on land deliberately reserved in the late 19th century as urban development progressed north and east from Manhattan.
The name "Bronx" originated with Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639.[6][7][8] The native Lenape were displaced after 1643 by settlers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Bronx received many immigrant groups as it was transformed into an urban community, first from various European countries (particularly Ireland, Germany and Italy) and later from the Caribbean region (particularly Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic), as well as African American migrants from the southern United States.[9] This cultural mix has made the Bronx a wellspring of both Latin music and hip hop.
Revitalization
In 1997, the Bronx was designated an All America City by the National Civic League, acknowledging its comeback from the decline of the mid-century.[65] In 2006, The New York Times reported that "construction cranes have become the borough's new visual metaphor, replacing the window decals of the 1980s in which pictures of potted plants and drawn curtains were placed in the windows of abandoned buildings."[66] The borough has experienced substantial new building construction since 2002. Between 2002 and June 2007, 33,687 new units of housing were built or were under way and $4.8 billion has been invested in new housing. In the first six months of 2007 alone total investment in new residential development was $965 million and 5,187 residential units were scheduled to be completed. Much of the new development is springing up in formerly vacant lots across the South Bronx.[67]
Sports
The Bronx is the home of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball.

Though the Bronx has problems, especially gang problems throughout (though mainly projects and apartment buildings), it’s one of the most visually interesting borough in NYC, with Brooklyn being the second. I traveled there and it just feels different to me.

Love this driving video of NY's Bronx. Feels like I'm actually driving the car myself. Been in Chicago for over 30 yrs and still think NYC and it's five burroughs are so electric and dynamic. 3 times as much population and BS proabally but there is something about that NYC vibe that can't be replicated. I'm stuck in Chicago but I love the NYC area and visit as often as I can !

If you grew up in the Bronx in the 70's, as I did, you'd be as pleased to see clean streets, and a brighter environment than back then. Mind you, I'm not blind to the fact that there are still great issues that face it, especially in the South Bronx. But as I said, and if you knew what it was like back then, especially in the mid-70's, you'd understand.

Firstly, it's a great video, you feel like you're riding along in the car, but I have 3 observations... 1. It was not what I expected. this could be any medium size town, not a borough of 8 million people New York City , I'm surprised how quiet it seemed to be, 2. I couldn't help but notice you were behind 2 different cars from Virginia, no point, I just found it amusing, and 3. I was waiting to see Yankee Stadium, is it not in the Bronx? Oh and 4. I loved the old buildings that still had the ghosts of old advertisement from the turn of the last century painted on their bricks. Great video.

Welcome to America Slipnotmetalrockful...welcome to America. I on the other hand love the diversity of NYC and the five boroughs. I like difference in architecture verses the south and west. New York is a historic city with a vibrancy and life of its own. You're either a city person or you're not. Over crowded cities, poverty and homelessness in while spread...even in smaller cities and rural area's across this country. Personally, I would live in NYC either, unless I were a millionaire, due to the high cost of living and taxation. However, I love to visit in the summer and experiencing all the things the boroughs have to offer during certain months. But as I said, I love the liveliness of a city, bright lights and people moving all about me. Live is to short for boring and ho hum. RGEE

besides some of the chaotic intersections, overall it looks really nice....I know a lot of people from the Bronx that act like it's a bad area, but NYC doesn't have anything like Baltimore, Philly, Cleveland, Cincinnati, St. Louis etc.

Reed A. There’s a lot of new and renovated buildings where there used to be abandon or vacant lots. The Bronx still has its bad vibes but nothing like 90s, 80s & 70s. The city has been putting a lot money into it for the past 2 decades now so it looks a lot better, but shit still goes on here. There’s still projects, drugs, knives, guns, gangs, welfare etc.

The Bronx, my home. you no longer see burned down buildings or empty lots, The Bronx is becoming the new Manhattan. we have new buildings and new businesses , And many more to come. The crime rate has gone down, the streets are much more safer for our children...

Hi and yeah, I enjoyed the ride. But I would go crazy about the traffic. So slow, every 50 meters red traffic lights. Here in Germany we go much faster. As i can see there is only one lane in both directions. I would like to know if travelling by bus is faster because the busses have single lanes ? Greetings and best wishes!
