Baby Pygmy Owls Bobbing Their Heads ~ Glaucidium passerinum

With the recent video of the boreal owl, I realized that you all probably adore owls. And since I've always been a very good guy, I decided to serve you another course. The footage is basically identical, only this time you won't be enjoying a boreal owl baby, but rather a Eurasian pygmy owl chick🦉
This is what a juvenile pygmy owl looks like just before leaving the nest hole. He's looking out for mommy bringing food, studying the world around him and listening to his brothers and sisters down in the cavity squeaking that they want to peek out as well. Listen in too, you can hear it well on the recording. Also notice how the area around the cavity is again surrounded by scavenging insects - I've already explained the reason for this in the previous two owl videos:

I reckon you're laughing a bit at the owlet for its funny head shake. In English, the movement is aptly called "bobbing". It's a way for owls to compensate for their anatomical limitation - their eyes are fixed in position and they can't move. If an owl wants to track, say, moving prey, it has to turn its whole head to follow it. The typical bobbing is then used to gain a more spatial perception and to more accurately locate the position and distance of objects in the vicinity. So this is a purely pragmatic matter, but I don't deny that it's pretty funny 🥹
