Very nice chum! Makes my 240 look bad lol… can I ask how you have your fikter outlets positioned? I have similar filters and have back left outlet flow going across the back and then the back righg outlet flowing out about 30 degrees to the front glass- best way I’ve found to get some circular flow- or is it best to aim both against the front glass? @GEORDIESCAPER3 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, there's two version of aquarium soil, base layer substrate which needs capping or you would have constant cloudy water, then there's aquarium soil which doesn't need capped and tends to be a little more expensive. I use both types depending on the type of scape I go with. I prefer the soil and use that mostly. Substrate base layer just worked out better for this particular scape. Sorry Geordie, a few more questions mate. 1. What was your substrate levels, am thinking 5cm for the Aqua terra and 3 cm for the quartz gravel? 2. Appreciate you might not be able to remember but roughly will do Thanks again, Stewart.
@GEORDIESCAPER4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewart, your levels will be fine👍add root tabs or capsules after around 6 months to substrate for rooted plants, that will replenish the substrate. i used one tub of Prodibio terra base in planted areas, ideally a bit more would of been better (two mounds either side). I used one large bag (15kg) of HK quartz white. GS👍

@@GEORDIESCAPER Thanks Mark, Used one of those substrate calculator and for a 5cm depth on the Vision 450, it stating I need 216lbs/100kg, which is 17 x 6kg tubs of terra base, which seems extreme

@@stewartkeil4314 nah not for a base layer and you're capping it with around 3-4 cm of gravel. I would get two tubs, use the one in the areas you're planting and use the other to get the extra depth if need be. You don't need base layer if you're having a beach from and or path for example, waste of base layer if no plants are going there, if that makes sense.

Hi Geordie, hope you are well. Apologies but I have a few more questions, if you don't mind. Plan on following your idea with two islands and the dark / light contrast with plants like Crypts to the back & side to somewhat enclose, Anubias in the middle and on wood. However, am slightly worried about the Juwel Vision 450 LEDs, which if my figures are correct produce just 0.13 (I might be wrong) Q1: If I use a good nutrient substrate, along with plant fertiliser, will the Juwel lights be sufficient for the easy plants mentioned to grow (slow is okay)? Q2: How long do you keep your lights on for and do you have a specific timeframe for on/off? Q3: Really like the idea of a second filter but want to keep the Juwel XL filter and the Juwel lid. If I purchased the Oase biomaster would this be compatable / fit with the Juwel lid ie. is there gaps in the lid for the Oase pipes? Q4: If Q3. is not compatible, could you recommend a second filter that would be glued / attached to the back left corner of the tank? Q5: Do you have any thoughts on backgrounds? Thanks in advance Mark
@GEORDIESCAPER4 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewart, no probs, I'll help where I can. 1. lights will be fine with all easy category plants as long as you're not injecting CO2. Good call with the nutrient rich substrate as crypts are heavy root feeders. 2. lights in this setup are 7 hours 3pm-10pm 3/4. I had the Biomaster running with lid and it is a tight squeeze (gaps for pipework on tge rear of the 240 presume it's the same on yours) and lid doesn't close flush but it didn't cause any issues. 5. background I like to paint black with acrylic paint because it hides wires and pipework. Hope this helps. GS

What do you use to connect the inlet and outlet piping into the tank? As the tank runs on an internal filter normally is there space to install this into the tank and still close the lid or do you leave your lid open at the back?

Hi there. Thankyou for the comment. Yeah i think it's best to overfilter and highly recommend the oase Biomaster thermo series of filters. I removed the internal filter to have more room in the tank. Substrate depends on the type. In this setup i used 9l of base layer substrate (prodibio terra base), capped with Hugo Kamashi white fine (approx 18l). If you want to use soil substrate such as Tropica Aquarium soil, which does not need capped, you will need more and more expensive. Hope this helps.

One other point what's your water condition Acidic or neutral to hard. Would love to see some Rummy nose tetras, blend in quite well with your hardscape. Hope you all stay safe!! All the best and a few Newcastle browns 😜

Hi Simon and thanks for the feedback. Lights: no control and only 76 watts total so 6 hours a day at the minute and I'll knock up to 7 max. Pangolino: noticed the leaf forgot to cut it off during maintenance, I'll check rhizome see how it's looking (well spotted though) Water: I have fairly soft water, haven't done ph in a while though, used to be around 6.5 if I remember correctly and to be honest I rarely check water parameters. Rummy nose: love 'em but I think it may be a little overcrowded if I add a school (no better schooling tetra though). Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@simoncushing1048 cheers mate, i had the skimmer running on my malawi setup for over a year, keep the surface crystal clear, simple clean of sponge once a week, great little gadget👍

Hi Simon, You were right about the Pangolino, rotten rhizome, so out of the tank now. Well spotted thanks👍
@simoncushing10484 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I had a feeling the one had rotted there was a leaf by the skimmer. The other leaves swaying a bit. I’ve had it happen to me. Keep a check on the other two👍 Anubis’s can be prone to rot! Depends on how they were cultivated..submerged or emerged. Sorry to hear that.

Hi, how many kilograms of rock did you use?
@GEORDIESCAPER4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Around 15-20kg, lava stone is lighter than most so you get more/bigger per kg.

@@GEORDIESCAPER Thanks for getting back. I'm hoping to get the rio 180 (only tank that would fit in my living room in this range). Now, I have a rough idea, for the substrate and good shout out on the rocks.

How did you remove the internal filter without scrstching the glass?
@GEORDIESCAPER3 жыл бұрын
Long sharp knife to cut through silicone blobs, remove the housing. Removed the remaining silicone with sharp razor followed by a good clean with white vinegar.

Why do you use 2 filters?
@GEORDIESCAPER3 ай бұрын
Because I had two so this helps to get flow around all areas of the tank, less dead spots. If I didn't have a filter I would normally add a wave maker in opposite corner/side. To create a circle motion of flow. I only do this on tanks thar are 4 foot and above.
@paulcoates2083 ай бұрын
@@GEORDIESCAPER thanks, I was curious about that. Iv the same tank and looking for a few ideas for an aquascape. I might have a look at wave makers so. A fine job you done!

Isnt the filter one of those built in ones? can they be removed?
@GEORDIESCAPER3 жыл бұрын
It does yeah but fairly easey to remove, carefully cut silicone blobs with large kitchen knife. remove filter housing, remove remaining silicone with razor blade and give it a good clean with white vinegar.
@Boss-zo4lw3 жыл бұрын
@@GEORDIESCAPER Thanks for info, how is the actual filter though in your opinion, worth leaving in?
@GEORDIESCAPER3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's fine, but I would add another filter for more circulation and better filtration. I don't think they're powerful enough for the size tank.
