Wow, in all the years I worked in the trade I never thought once about taking one of those STK votage regulators to bits - thanks for showing that, It's fascinating! Also makes me wonder how many might be repairable with a bit of tinkering. Old Amstrad monitors used to have similar regulators in them which died all the time from overheating.

It's a 1986/87 vintage machine and the difference down to the HR-D170 is the LP-ability. I don't know if this JVC chassis and mechanism was the last casted (all-metal) good solid one. The idler tire, capstan pinch roller and more or less the entire mechanism is also used in the very first generation of JVC S-VHS machines (HR-S5000, 7000, 8000, 5500). However these S-VHS machines seems more populated. Double rollers on the left side of the video head drum for instance. The motors seems different also. One downfall is the problem with loose guides, but it can be fixed. There seems to be no division of JVC mechanisms like at Panasonic where you have G, Z etc. Does this excellent JVC mech has a name ?

I never liked how on newer machines is that the tape stayed wrapped around head while it FF and RW. I am no expert but is it not better for the lifespan of the tape if the tape would retract back to the shell before FF and RW?

I found one of these in a storage room in the basement, my brother broke a VCR but luckily I got to that one before he did, it is picky about tapes but works pretty well on certain tapes, at first it didn't work so I opened it and the fuses were blown, there was no signs of failure or bad components so I replaced the 2 blown fuses and it worked just fine, the fuses were blown for no reason, and I use that VCR with my flat screen tv, it actually looks pretty good despite being on VHS tape.

I have a JVC VCR very similar to this one. It's a little more complex, has a few more boards. I suppose it's older than the model you're showing here. It has no power, but I get a clock display. STK has UNSW 12 V. I was told to ground pin 5 of the STK with a 1 K resistor. The power LED goes on when doing that, I get SWD 5V and SWD 12 V, but the display acts as if the unit is off, showing a blinking clock. Do you think the STK could be the problem, or there is a problem with a CPU IC?

All the old units that used linear power supplies used them. All of the old Betamax units used them, as did most of the early VHS machines. The old Hitachi, and RCA units used them too. Panasonic was one of the early manufactures that started using inverter supplies probably because they were cheaper and more energy efficient.

One of the ones I fixed on the channel, I think it was the Digistar 46". Guy abandoned it, sat in my garage for 10 months. His phone was out of service on repeated attempts to contact, so I sold it. About 4 months later I ran into him, and he asked for the TV back. I told him I tried to contact him and his cell was out, and he gave me the sob story that his prepaid minutes had run out, and he was short on cash to buy more, and he lost his job and yada yada yada...So I told him my garage had been broken into, and it was stolen. Guy that got it thinks he scored the best deal of his life for 50 bucks.

here I can´t get audio, but main problem is ... You store the equipment for months or years and humidity on air causes oxidize of power supply welding? May it happen to aan equipment I got.
@12voltvids8 жыл бұрын
That's why I store my equipment in a heated facility, so that humidity is not an issue. I store the equipment down at the end of the room with the baseboard heater too, so when it gets cold and the heat comes on the equipment gets the nice worm air first as it heats the room up. I never let the temperature get down below 7' in winter.

@@12voltvids Thanks for the info! I'll have to take a look at those. Wow, that's frustrating to have to wait that long. I have a JVC SR-V101US that I use to transfer VHS to digital. It will not rewind or fast forward in fast mode. I tore it apart and found out that a small torsion spring was missing that is supposed to help push a plate up to engage the clutch into a higher gear, thus not allowing it to fast forward or rewind in fast mode. I've looked at two different online stores, ued.com and partstore.encompass.com, but they don't supply the part anymore. I think I might have to resort to buying used "for parts" VCRs that have compatible parts in them.

Silly idea of mine: Manny people give thir VCR to repair but have no idea,what is broken,what the technican is doing to fix it. Manny people might be interested to watch and learn about their loved VCR. So just fixing it and putting the video f.e. on youtube is a great additionel service most other "repair guys wont offer. Besides the interest of the customer in the technics under the chasis of their device they know exactly what they are paying for. f.e. Besides this it is oviously a perfect advertisment. This might be a great buiseness model in my humble opinion though I know you are just doing it as a "hobby" nowadays.

STK strikes again. Man those things were unreliable. They really turned to shit towards the end of the RPTV era.
@jdrs42144 жыл бұрын
Preventative maintenance is key here. You have to maintain those by cleaning them up, cleaning the heads, checking the small rubber belts for cracking, and re-applying that thermal paste on those large heat generating ICs every 2 years or so, that crap dries up, loses its heat transferring magic, IC then overheats, and boom, it burns itself out. Now, your VCR has become a useless brick. Of course JVC, Sony, Emerson, and Sanyo would never give you that information.
@THEtechknight4 жыл бұрын
@@jdrs4214 That might be true, but no consumer ever does that. Chips need to be designed to be a little bit more resilient to heat transfer. most ICs are. except the STK line. Ive had some last up until today, and ive had a bunch that didnt. for example, the STR regulator in my Magnavox TV is original to the TV, from 1994. I havent done a thing to it and it still works fine. its my daily driver. Only thing it needed was a B Boost cap in its life.
