JVC HRSC1000U SVHS SVHSC VCR Repair

This was one of the most complex VHS VCRs ever sold.
It would accept both the regulat VHS tape and VHS-c compact tapes from that camcorder format, and was a great idea for those that had a SVHS-c camcorder.
Great ideas however don't always translate into a great device. These units were relatively well built, but unfortunately the way they were assembled makes them one of the more difficult (expensive) vcrs to do basic maintenance, and due to all the moving parts were more prone to break down.
At a time when companies were moving to fewer parts to improve reliability this was a step backwards. The cassette adapters were a great idea, and were perfectly functional.

I picked one up last year in excellent shape with the wood side panels for $40. No video output but it ended up being bad capacitors on the power board. They are nice units when they are running and thanks for the video on the mode switch. That will be very helpful if mine ever gets dirty.

Hey there!! Just want to say how much I appreciate your VALUABLE videos!! This is something that I wanted to do so much as my future job in my young time but at school back then I couldn't take the courses needed (physics, algebra) to graduate and go to college so I ended up been a cook and now a baker BUT always interested in electronics especially fixing them. I do very small fix ups but to do troubleshooting like you do it's just (and still) a dream to me. Oh I did fix 2 tvs about 6 months ago one with bad video display ended up just reheating a bga chip on the main board (yeah I know should re ball it but it's just a temporary fix but still working since) and the other was a ripped off (and was able to see an attempt to fix it) HDMI connector and a bad LED background light that was easy to fix. This I have no problem to fix this but to troubleshoot electronic circuit that's where I'd love to learn so much to do and that is why I just love to see and learn but I can't be on electronics every day so it's not easy for me to keep this in my mind but I just come back here and just re watch a video of yours and I'm ok. I do have lots of tools to fix and check (still need more) but for the "basic" checking I do have. Today's electronics is not the same as what it used to (like in your time) but I'm very interested into micro soldering (that I did with the ripped off HDMI connector) but still very interested in normal electronics too. I beleave in recycling electronics and today they throw away so much because you can't get parts for them they just say you need a new board because that little part that needs to be changed is not available. I just hope that the right to repair in the US will come to Canada too. Again THANKS for your GREAT videos and I'm allway looking forward to you new vids (when I have the chance)!!!

It was not my first career choice. It was plan B in case my first choice didn't work out. Actually my first choice was what I do today. I had relatives that worked for the phone company and my dad was a longshoreman so naturally those were significant career choices. Longshoremen was out due to the natural pecking order to get in. I would have had to work for years our of town to get enough seniority to be an equipment operator. Even with my dad as the foreman and eventually management cheif foreman in charge of everyone, the union had their rules and seniority counted. The phone company I just missed out. They had a huge hiring blitz from 1977 to 1981, the year i graduated. All positions filled and they remained that way for the next 25 years till the hires between 77 and 81 started retiring in mass. I went to school to do video production but tv stations were also not hiring, at least in local market and i didn't want to relocate. So I learned the electronics business and started my own production company. Between fixing electronics and doing private video shoots for companies and private events (weddings mostly) i honed my skils in video production. I left the electronics business in 2003 and focused full time on video production. In 2004 I heard that the phone company was going to do another mass hire, so I got on that and went through the process. Of course today it isn't just phone, it is mostly internet and TV, and no longer copper wires but fiber optics.

Thank you for this video and the in-depth recording of the repair. That is a very complicated machine. I had never ran into one of those in my life. Something I forgot to mention earlier - these machines came with a demonstration SVHS-C tape that was a demonstration of how the machine worked with the small SVHS-C tapes. I still have that tape!

I have a few Panasonic's NV-V8000 which plays regular VHS tapes & VHS-C without the adaptor. Have to say had these from the 1990s & I've had no issues at all with them & they are used daily for HiFi recording .....

So I have to say, I really enjoy your videos and you’re very good at what you do. I couldn’t help notice the scratches on the top of the front panel from sliding around on the bench. I would always put down some kind of protective cloth on the bench, because I know customers that would lose their mind over stuff like that.

Dog Day Afternoon; VCR Edition! It's been unusually warm and sunny these past few days here in the UK, though August was dull and overcast for weeks on end so now we're making up for lost time! Yes, this one looks like it was a real stinker! JVC really dropped the ball in the early nineties, though the later machines weren't too bad. I always thought the pictures were much nicer and cleaner-looking on JVC decks, though it's a shame about the 'unease' of servicing. Perhaps they wanted everyone to take out pricey extended guarantees so that all the repair work would then go to JVC's 'authorized dealers and repair centres'..

Recently got a gigantic JVC HR-S10000U in as-is condition. High-end vcr with FIVE motors in the mech (drum, capstan, spool drive, loading, and threading). It failed to thread the tape although I hear the motor trying to do its job. Probably loose belt - sound pretty easy. Turns out that the drive belt was totally blocked behind the vcr's body making it IMPOSSIBLE to access. The whole mech. had to be taken out to replace that tiny belt (after some 20 screws & 50 connectors that had to be removed first). Yuckkkkkkk. An hour later plus some cursing I eventually succeed in replacing the belt and put everything back together, only to find out that the left spool hub was somehow stuck. Still hadn't figured out what caused that to stick. Fortunately got it cheap - 5 or 6$ I think. Cheap enough to be thrown away If all fails. Great-looking vcr, with poorly implemented in design. Duh...

Had that same vcr. No wonder it crashed and burned as they say. JVC at its best 🤪🤪🤪 I did have another that last 12 years was a better designed.It was repaired easily Considering the screwball design. So I was lucky it was not worse. I used it 24/7. Eventually the components wore out .Not able to fix.Good Video glad your were able to fix it🙂😎

I got one of these back in 1990. It served me extremely well for a lot of years and the last time I fired it up (3 years ago) to transfer 2 tapes for a friend, it worked although something inside was making a slight sizzling sound and a funky smell came from it although the machine continued to work fine with good video and audio.

@@12voltvids Fortunately I have another working SVHS machine to do the few SVHS tapes I have left. The tapes I've tried still look great after nearly 30 years which surprises me, but they were recorded on that JVC in SP on SVHS tapes. I'm glad I was lucky and got so many great years of service out of that HR-SC1000U. It was by far the best VCR I ever had in terms of performance and long-term reliable trouble-free service.

Other common problems for this model are the one surface-mount cap on video head drum board, and capstan shaft gear falls out with plastic crack.

Yeah I remember this deck quite well... That was back in 1991 when I first saw the real thing which was marketed alongside with the flagship HR-S10000U. Too bad I don't have the sales brochure anymore...... BTW AFAIK the only other deck that is both S-VHS/C compatible was the Pana HV-V8000 which was available for JDM and EUDM, but not USDM......

Shocked the gear on capstan didn’t crack? I fix a few of those many years ago. I hated working on them as definitely not easy due to tons of desoldering and wiring nightmare.

That is just a tape stabilizer. Supposed to even out the tension top to bottom on the tape. Basically, driven by the tape helps move the tape along.

I have a JVC HR-D470U that the head would not spin up. I cleaned the drum and heads and found that the drum was stuck when I tried to spin it. It popped free and now spins fine, have you run across that problem?

Yes bearings have stuck, rotary transformer had stuck.

@@12voltvids Should that be taken apart and oiled? Or is it good as is? I have two other ones, this one is my original one I bought in 1988. Last moron that worked on it when the florescent display was changed left out many screws and put odd screws that didn't go to this unit, and they pinched one of the ribbon cables closing the circuit board back down. It was a stereo hifi shop, and I don't think vcr's were their niche. Just plain sloppy careless workmanship in my book. Replaced all the screws that I robbed from my parts unit. They left off the grounding spring that grounds the top cover. That shop is out of business now.

@@zulumax1 it's probably ok. The problem with oiling the drum bearing is oil will spin out and get on tape. Or it could get in rotary transformer and trap dirt which will cause the insulation on the wires to be damaged and seize it up. That happened with. my slhf1000 beta. The drum was very loud so i oiled it 25 years ago and it ruined the drum by causing it to seize.

Never seen one of those before, the loading system must have been a pig to design and be reliable. No dead caps in it ...... yet. Yes that mode switch was a nightmare to get to, if it was mine i might do some pcb chopping and hardwires to jump over the missing section over the switch position. Yes i'm a evil git lol. So kester is no longer your favorite, i still use 60/40 MultiCore brand , but i have a reel that Came from a factory that closed down. Have you ever thought about one of those hot solder suction guns, just a thought.

I used to have one of those solder sucker pumps. An electric model. It used to eat the tips like a race car drinks fuel. I haven't considered getting another one as i don't do enough volume to justify it. Even though it may appear that I am in the business still, I am not. I still work on equipment from time to time but it is not how I earn a living and the only reason i do it now is for the KZbin content production where I do make a little bit of dough. If it wasn't for doing these videos i wouldn't be fixing anything. My garage would be used for parking my car in. I actually managed to stay away from repairs for about 8 years when i left the business. Then I got this crazy idea that I could do a few repair videos and see what happens. Well it has been a fun ride and it's still fun for now.

My advise is don't get one. They have many mechanical issues with that loader and parts are far and few between. If you have vhsc tapes to transfer just use an adapter. That way when the adapter breaks just find another one. You are correct they're relatively rare, because when they were being sold the smarter buyers didn't buy into them in high numbers. They could see they were very mechanical and more prone to trouble. At the shop I worked at (they were a Sony, Panasonic and jvc dealer) we had to carry it as part of the dealer agreement. We had one to show and one to go and when they sold we never carried them again and both people that brought them regretted it as they had more problems than regular cheap VCR. Remember the story about the person that tried to load an 8mm tape. Yup that was one of the 2 we sold. They didn't even have any c tapes just bought it because it was the "top of the line" at the time. They had a Sony v5000 camera. One day their kid thought it would play the 8mm tapes and tried to load one. Result? Broken tape and broken loader mechanism. That loader mechanism cost him about 300 to fix and the customer was not impressed.

@@waltchan we also were a long time RCA dealer too, dumped them when Thompson took them over. We carried Fisher / sanyo for a short time and Toshiba too, but dropped them. Sony Panasonic , jvc and Mitsubishi/electrohome became our main brands. It had nothing to do with Toshiba being a good or bad brand, it was more that those brands had the crap beat out of their prices. Brands that the big box stores beat the crap out of their prices found themselfes having a very short shelf life at the shop. I repaired all brands and saw my share of Toshiba.

They actually gave you enough wires to flip the board?!?! German vcr's is common to do that. Most of the units slated for USA usually have way too short leads to do that. It's called unplug everything and attempts to repair are unpowered. It's like it's a sadistic move for other countries to give us that go to hell attitude just because. I've been to Germany and fixed a bunch of vhs units just because I was Jonesing to work on some electronics!

I put JVC and Philips at the same level. They invented great things, however their products aren't so hot. JVC VCR's are not really all that they crack up to be. Definitely the Sony engineers did it right.

@@enzoperruccio Hi Enzo. I remember when our family bought our first colour television back in 79. It was a Philips 63 CM. My Father bought it for Christmas. The store we purchase it from delivered it and set it up. We were amazed at the quality of the colour. Then 3 hours later the set malfunctioned and went into this power off / power on cycle. My Father was fuming, and to make matters worse the service centres were closed for the holiday season. We finally had the TV repaired under warranty, and without fail that TV would malfunction at least once a year. So it was a TV that had great picture quality for the time, but built very poorly. And other people who had Philips TV's that we knew also shared similar stories.

@@MrPitatom I've always seen Philips as kind of hit and miss. Most of their products were great whilst some were straight junk. Their VCRs were okay for the most part, though I had a relative of mine go through +15 machines back in the day. I myself never had too much trouble with the brand, and nowadays they're the best choice in some cases.
