Couple of things 1) the new exoplanet detection using legrange concepts is awesome - I love that lateral thinking and their knowledge lit the lightbulb over their heads! 2) you were describing dart and I though - why didn't they have a mini cubesat onboard to .... then you said "it's already launched a cubesat.." 🤣🤣 Love the channel as always!

Hello Fraser, I was just listening to a podcast, and there is a GAIA-like mission called something like DESSI (not sure how to spell) with a ground telescope in Arizona where they will create a 3D-map of more accurate measurements of distances of 35 million galaxies (5-year program), in order to get a more precise impression of how dark energy is distributed in the universe. They also except to find more deepest-galaxies never seen before. :D

Love the thumbnail 😂❤️ Question regarding nuclear rockets - I get that sending up radioactive elements on a rocket with some chance of exploding is scary, but why don't we just bring really small nuggets of material with us on, say, every launch to the ISS, put them somewhere with the least risk to astronauts and then we have nuclear material in orbit ready-to-use for any nuclear rocket that needs it? Is it just too much of a hassle, or is there a more fundamental problem to it?
@Ravenscaller
@Ravenscaller 2 жыл бұрын
Voyager 1 and 2 are both nuclear powered as have other deep space sats. The launch risk is fairly minimal but still there. One problem is a shortage of Plutonium which is no longer being refined per one of the international nuclear treaties. I forgot which one. Having said that. We are talking basically about a battery to replace the solar cell not a nuclear propulsions system. That's an entirely different game.

I need to get my prescription of xanax back because of JWST. This Mission is stressing me the hell out. I'll be devastated if it fails early man. The info coming out is just too good. I am over here trying to learn how to read the unprocessed files so I can get them early when I heard the news. The Trappist-1 files are right there if I can learn to read the header as it seems to be a series of headers followed with Binary data. In the middle of trying to learn this I hear of MIRI and its stressing me out.

I've heard that A: To be part of the solar system an object has to orbit the sun which everything else does. Feels like DART will be pretty anti-climactic. We already know the probe's mass and velocity, as well as those of the target body, so it's trivial to calculate the most likely outcome. Let's hope that the solid propellants in the SRBs haven't degraded too much by the time they finally get round to lighting the candle. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if they just smouldered on the pad, or produced too little thrust?
@joevignolor4u949
@joevignolor4u949 2 жыл бұрын
The delay problem doesn't involve the propellants in the SRB's. The issue is with the flight batteries aboard the SRB's that operate the self destruct system. In the event of a problem during launch a booster can go out of control and threaten populated areas. If you remember back this happened during the Challenger launch accident. After seeing a booster go out of control the range safety officer needs to be able to send a self destruct signal to the booster, which will fire explosive charges to destroy the booster. If the booster's flight batteries have been sitting too long the range safety office will de-certify them for flight. This will require sending the vehicle back to the VAB to have the batteries recertified before the rocket can be launched. NASA is currently trying to get a waiver from the range safety office to allow the rocket to fly even though the period of the certification for the batteries has already passed by.
@robst247
@robst247 2 жыл бұрын
@@joevignolor4u949 Yes, I understand that issue, but I read somewhere a few months ago that the solid propellant in the SRBs has a limited 'shelf life' and gradually degrades with the passage of time.
