Wemby is getting plenty of dunks, layups, floaters, and lobs. He's just getting in game reps of high-volume threes so that people know that they can't sag off of him and just cause it's a good skill to have especially this early in his career. He'll get slightly stronger and slowly move in his game to be even more lobs and post ups but like why are people complaining??? He was this high of a prospect because he was 7'4" with guard skills and now people are angry that he is using those guard skills?

None of them are thinking about the future of his career and how nasty it is going to be when a 7'4 center has a consistent 3pt shot in his prime. I think people just like to complain about the 3pt shot because they think someone has big as Wemby should just live in the paint and nothing else. They just need to let him work on his shot, it's his 2nd season.

"Also being a threat from 3 opens up offense for everyone else." It's exactly the opposite. If he played in the paint, the defense would compress around him, and that would open up permiter play for his teammates. But instead he's out there shooting threes, making it easy for the defense. He's not even a great 3-point shooter. He's average.

@dookdawg214
@dookdawg214 11 күн бұрын
@@mindGAAP I know, but he's wrong. I'm coming with facts (look at my other comment where I prove it with stats and math). It's basic math, and I've demonstrated it clearly. Sorry if this is complicated for you. When Wemby shoots 2-pointers, they're worth more than his 3-pointers. Additionally, shooting in the paint would open up more possibilities for his team. There's a reason the Spurs lose so much. Wemby should be absolutely dominant in the paint. Instead he's out there shooting threes at an average (i.e. unimpressive) percentage. As the defending team, this is EXACTLY where you want him -- outside shooting threes.
@dookdawg214
@dookdawg214 11 күн бұрын
@@mindGAAP Here is a copy-paste of the post you clearly missed. I am demonstrating with facts and math why Wemby shooting outside is a bad idea... I make the case that it is statistically inefficient for Wemby to shoot three-pointers. A couple weeks ago I looked at his numbers for this season. At the time, his total FG% was 48%. But that consisted of 164/273 for 2-point field goals, meaning 60.1%. From 3-point land, he was shooting 93/262 for 35.5%. What this means is, every time he shoots a 2-pointer, on average, that shot is worth 1.20 points. In contrast, every time he shoots a 3-pointer, on average, that shot is worth 1.06 points. This means his 2-point shots are more valuable than his 3-pointers. But this doesn’t even factor in other advantages to Victor playing in the paint. While shooting these shots worth 1.20 points, he’d be better positioned for second-chance shots. Also, by playing in the paint, he attracts the defense and opens up perimeter play for his teammates. So, you see, you can praise him all day about how unusual it is to see a giant out there making threes. But the fact is, the Spurs are barely a .500 team despite bringing in good young talent, plus CP3. That’s because the Spurs are not utilizing Wemby correctly. He shouldn’t be shooting so many threes. That’s why the Spurs are not winning.
@rfwhyte
@rfwhyte 13 күн бұрын
Wemby shooting as many threes as possible now is the BEST thing he can do for his long term future in the league. Outside shots put less strain on his body, as he doesn't have to bang in the paint with other big men, and so reduces his chances of injury, hopefully leading to a longer career. Not to mention the fact that the only way to get good at shooting is to shoot, and so while he's only shooting 33% from 3 now, if he can get to 40%+ he would be absolutely LETHAL as there's no way literally anyone in the league can hope to block, let alone contest a 3 point jump shot from a 7' 4" dude, meaning he'd be literally the ULTIMATE floor spacer, dragging the other teams bigs out to the line and beyond, probably drawing doubles, creating space in the lane / paint for his team mates to cut into, and Wemby could literally pass OVER anyone to hit the cutter, so the version of Wemby that will hopefully become an elite 3pt shooter, if surrounded by some other decent shooters and cutters, will lead to a team offense that will be absolutely UNSTOPPABLE. So seriously, Wemby should just keep chucking shots, cause once he gets good at them the league will be DONE.

Thank you : it's a pleasure to read someone who thinks and explains instead of just saying "i like this, i hate that". Sure the fact he plays this way in his first seasons doesn't implies he will do it all his career : there's a process and Wemby is so special that Pop (thanks to Ginobili who helped him to understand that) made a special plan for him. Wemby won't be Duncan 2.0 (or KAJ 2.0 or Wilt 2.0 or whoever 2.0) : he is Wemby 1.0 and needs time to develop. In a team which isn't ready to contend, this is not a problem. Sochan, Vassell, Castle are really young and Spurs will have nice 1st round picks soon so... no rush.

People are forgetting that being tall is not just benefits. Wemby is shredded, but he is having trouble squaring up against some stronger bigs, the obvious answer would be 'gain weight', but his height make that troublesome. If he gets seriously heavier, his ankles are going to feel that. You can't be 7'4 and have a build like Lebron.
@Moneyman-t3e

He doesn’t need to be anything other than himself. He’s not Gobert or LeBron; he’ll carve out his own path. Five years in, if he has a decent team and still hasn’t reached the Finals, then we can revisit this 'bulk up' conversation. But not when he’s 21 and hasn’t even fully grown into his adult body yet. At 7'4", he can post up regardless, and his defense is unmatched. For now, bulking up would likely just take away from his speed and agility.

People mock Wemby for being skinny then mock him for limiting how much he bangs down low. Right now, he’s got a KD build so he’s playing a KD game. When he gets a Hakeem build or dare I say a David Robinson build, he’ll work on his post play. Right now he’s just adding skills to his game. Last year he added Gobert’s defense. This year it’s KD’s shooting. Next year, it could be Jokic’s passing.

I think the Spurs are also being very smart with their development of him. Wemby having a jumper is less wear-and-tear to his knees in the long run. Also, he’s still very skinny atp. Him camping out at the paint on both sides of the court in an 82-game season might spell unwanted injuries and it’s still just their 2nd year of rebuild with him. The Spurs are probably still waiting for his body to further mature and gain a little bit more weight and strength. Wemby already roams all over the paint on the defensive end so I can understand why the Spurs would want him to be more of a perimeter player on the offensive end even if it’s just for injury prevention. He went from shooting 24% in October to 37% in November then 38% in December, so he’s definitely improving. Ofc, that percentage might be inconsistent as the season goes along, but I think if Wemby gains more confidence with his jumper and becomes more consistent, he’s gonna be very formidable in the future. I think for now, he’s still figuring out where the spots on the court he’s most comfortable with. He’s still a developing player. And the Spurs are not yet contending seriously anyway so why not use this time to further develop the weaknesses of their young core.

Respect what the Spurs are doing. They know their stuff. And I also think if there's a team that has the awareness that they don't know everything, it would be them. That is to say, they appreciate the magnitude of the responsibility that is mentoring a genuinely unique talent, one the NBA has likely not ever seen, and not putting him in a box other than what he and the team builds. I believe that is truly what it means to help him reach his full potential -- expectations of what a player his size should play like be damned.

I think you should have included that clip of wemby from one of the recent games Vs Nuggets, when 3 defenders rushed him as he was preparing for a 3, and passed the ball. Hes such a threat in the paint he can already take up 2-3 defenders and free his teammates, now he's doing it beyond the arc as well. I think that's gonna be very important when he gets championship calibre teammates who can really deliver on the space he frees up

Playing against grown man in a league, and he needs to run way more miles more than ever as a 7 footer whose body isn't fully developed yet? Ever thought of avoiding injuries? Plus, everyone that is actually watching Wemby know he scores inside, just not much in the low post, and remind me how poor the spacing again? Using a example from 50 years ago isn't a clever way to show your critical thinking skills. And everyone know about Kareem so no much knowledge showed. Check the effeciency of skyhoook and one should know it's not that efficient. Kareeem was taller and atheletic than others, and he use jumphooks and semi-jumpers a lot. He dunks as well. Trust me, he’ll be working in the paint a lot more in another season or two. Be happy he’s not in there a lot yet. Wemby with a Giannis frame is beyond scary. Remember Greek was nearly as skinny when he came into the league. A Wemby that can push you around like Giannis is quite literally unguardable when you factor in an elite shot. Small correction: He is shooting 33.7 in his career, but he is shooting 35ish% this season. Still below average, but remember that 1) he had a slow start where he shot 20ish% in his first 8 games (he has hit closer to 37% since then), 2) he has taken a lot more this season, and 3) he is an excellent free throw taker, meaning that this number is most likely going to improve.

What people don't get is that by shooting threes, he can come back on defense faster, and block easy layups and dunks on the fast break. It also allows him to keep his energy throughout the game. If you put him in the post, he might be more prolific offensively, but you lose the rim protection with the fast rhythm of today's game
@alphabrother6823
@alphabrother6823 13 күн бұрын
I think what a lot of people are forgetting is THIS IS HIS 2ND SEASON. As good as he is, believe it or not, he can become better. But in order to improve, you have to let him develop his game. Allowing him to work on his threes early in his career is much easier than trying to do so 5-10 years in. It's so when the time comes where he NEEDS to hit a 3, he'll be able to. Not to mention, something that hampers player development is INJURIES. If Wemby spammed post-ups and attacked the rim every possession, that's far riskier than shooting a 3. Believe me, Wemby knows that he can easily dunk.
@MoeEpsilon
@MoeEpsilon 13 күн бұрын
It kind of reminds me of Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt was the most dominate player in NBA history, bar none. He had insane vertical leap for his size because he did the high jump. He could sprint faster than guards as a big man, because he did track and field. He could bench press hundreds of pounds and was physically stronger than anyone on the court. Wilt didn't want to dunk and finger roll the ball in every play though. He thought it was more skillful to shoot a fadeaway like Dirk and that accounted for 60% of his shots. Still the 7th highest scoring player of all time playing only 13 true seasons (1 he was injured). The thing is though, when he wanted to, he just slammed it in when he was making it a point to score more because no one could stop him. Wemby should go this route. It's good he has a three point shot and that it's developed, but if the Spurs need points, he needs to not mess around, get the basket, get the points because no one can stop him throwing it in and get back in the game.

Guys, you're overthinking. I'm french and Wemby said it multiples times : shooting that many 3's WON'T BE HIS BREAD AND BUTTER! The Spurs are in building mode, but the kid is so good that it prob won't take long until they became contender, meaning THIS season is probably the only one of his entire career where working on his 3's in-game without any pressure will be acceptable. It's all about reps and getting comfy with his 3's, trust me he knows damn well the most efficient way for him to play, the kid is smart

This is life imitating art. Enough of us over the years created players like this in video games and it eventually manifested itself.
