this is a really good idea. Im also a fan of football (soccer in the us) and tournaments like the champions league and fa cup always brighten up the season half way through. I think a cup competition will do the same in the nba cause after the start of season hype wears off theres not much to look forward to until near the playoffs. it can also be a good way for nba to test out new potential rules like the 4 point line

More sides get bragging rights that way. One thing I need to say is that retaining is the seven game series. People are most glued to their tvs during playoffs and entire cities are entranced for at least two weeks when their team is playing in a series. Make all the changes you want to the regular season but don't lose that.

I agree with that, also agree with doing away with all-star weekend, UNLESS they give us something new and exciting. And it needs a meaningful reward, which always makes things better. The allstar game has always been just for fun, but if something is on the line, it would be much better. The problem is, how do you put something on the line for half of the nba teams? Players that will only be teamed up that one time foe the year? Maybe an all-star tourny is the way to go. Normal playoff format, 7 game series east vs west. And even tho its a shared reward, it might would build a tradition and over time players would gain more and more pride in winning it. Also, to take it a step further maybe, if a trophy just isnt meaningful enough, give the winning conference the #1 and #3 guaranteed draft pick to a team in that conference. And they could, and would still just trade them like they do, so it wouldnt imbalance things or overpower any side i dont think. Would take some experimentation. Unfortunately, thats the problem, alot of diff things might be good, but we can never know without trying them, and the leagues dont want to risk taking an L while experimenting a new layout usually, which is why things stay the same way so long. Its the attitude of, if it aint broke, dont fix it. But its on the verge of breaking at this point imo.

I agree, this is an excellent idea. But I wouldn't necessarily think cutting the league down to 70 games would translate to a direct 15% paycut for the players. As you hinted on, the shorter season should allow fans to watch more of their team, the ticket prices would probably go up a little due to the supply/demand of tickets/games available. With fewer games, potentially higher tv numbers per game, I don't think the players/sponsors would lose out as much as 15%. Heck with the tournament idea for draft seedings, it could create a lot of new buzz and sponsorship opportunities for teams that would otherwise hardly have any media attention focus on them at that point. I think its a win win

Imo comparing the NBA season to MLB season is dumb. In the NBA all stars are playing 30+ minutes of intense physical basketball. The best players even play 40+ minutes. In the MLB players go up to bat 2 or 3 times and then occasionally try to catch the ball and throw it in. I'm not trying to hate on baseball, it's not easy hitting a ball going 90mph but 1 game of basketball requires more energy and effort than 1 game of baseball.

Adam Silver knows 1v1 would be great for fans etc, but it's the players that make it not happen because they dont want potential embarrassment because if its 1v1 then half the people will lose. But if its 3v3, then it's more of team fault and less harsh on the individual losing(1v1)

Yeah, baseball is a lot less athletic than basketball is, and less prone to injury. I mean, because of the intensity of football, the NFL only has teams play 1 game PER WEEK and only 16 TOTAL. I personally find that to be way too little, but there is a reason for it. The different physical toll for each sport means the number of games they play should adjust accordingly.
