At the same time they had to score that many points because their teams were very offensively deficient. Like those squads that Kobe was on in 2005-06 or T-Mac was on in 2003 were atrocious. You don't know basketball well then. Steve Nash is more flashy than John Stockton. But that does not make a player better. John Stockton lead the NBA in assists 4 more times than Nash and did it with a weaker roster than what Nash did his. Then he steals the ball way more and 2 more assists per game. So John Stockton creates more points per game than Nash. Also Nash was just a average defender and John Stockton was a very good defender with 5 Defensive first teams. Nash has 0 Defensive awards. Only things Nash got on Stockton is 3%, freethrow % and PPG. Rebounds. If pro coaches had to pick they would mostly pick John Stockton. He makes your team better at PG not just by passing and shooting. He also plays very good defense. He will create 40 something points per game and lower the FG% of his opposing PG and create more points. Nash would create alittle less and with a better roster of players. Plus play average defense.

The easiest way to say it, is that you could get more a lot of trouble in getting fouls being a defensive player than actually getting in trouble as an offense player. A true baller would know the feeling that if you even overly be defensive you will just be trapped and get fouled anyways. A true offense player would use a good defender to draw a lot of foul. That is basically why being offense player is more lethal this days is because they know the big flaws of defenders.

I'd like to see 'em change back to a more balanced game, but I think it's more likely they'll put in a 4 and 5 point shot, to get those scores even higher. Hell, if popularity is as simple as just having higher scores, make baskets worthy 20, long shots worth 30 and free throws worth 5. And then, shots from half court get ya 40! Scores in the 2 and 3 thousand range!! "And the Lakers pulled away from the Pelicans tonight 2,394 to 2,245. The Pels stayed within a hundred until the Lakers nailed consecutive 40 pointers late in the 4th." I won't be watching though.
@AsianEyes0073 жыл бұрын
@@Trollificusv2 I see where you’re coming from, but having high numbers in the double digits for a single bucket is ridiculously unnecessary. The popularity that comes from ranged shooters, comes from their frequent ability to hit those shots. The three is only a one point difference, and yet, is a very intimidating and dangerous shot, because, shooters who can make low percentage shots (being farther away from the basket), become a threat to players who can only score shots from the two or in the paint. And due to that fact, the numbers slowly start racking up and eventually create a confident lead if there is not a stop to the 3 point shot/play.

You are just about my favorite of all of the basketball KZbinrs, and with that said, I love some of these kind of detailed breakdowns and this one in particular interest me because I don't like today's style of basketball but I recognize how unique and different and revolutionary it is. With all that said I was hanging on every word as you were breaking this thing down and especially right after the Steve Nash interview, you made an interesting point that it's sort of true but completely false, let me explain what I mean. You talked about how most of us could name a lot of the high scores in the league but couldn't name the high rebounders in the league. I've always been a deep stats guy myself because I created my own unique fantasy basketball system that is unlike your traditional fantasy basketball where you play week to week. Week to week scoring eliminates head to head which is why fantasy football is so wildly popular and successful. Basketball baseball hockey etc with their week-to-week style takes all of the interest in it away. In week two week scoring it's not about who the best player is or at least the best player sometimes situationally but let's be honest, you don't bench Aaron rodgers. Even if it's a situation thing it's very rare that you bench your studs in football. But in basketball, if LeBron only has two games, you might start one of The Ball Brothers over him if they happen to have one of those five-game weeks. So years ago when me and my friends had started playing fantasy football and we saw how the format was so successful, we sat down and said to ourselves okay how can we translate that to basketball. and we came up with a format where you only play on Friday night because if you happen to go through the NBA schedule you will see that Friday nights are consistently the night of the week that has the most games. A busy week has 13 games a slow week has eight. So then we create a schedule that shows every team's schedule for every Friday night throughout the season and you draft based off of that. And you end up with a 20-week regular season and a 3 week playoff season. Because there's 23 Friday nights throughout the season every year minus All-Star weekend. So if kemba Walker plays 19 out of the 20 Friday nights during the regular season, it has two out of the three playoff games.... and Trey young only plays 10, it only has one during the playoffs.... Well you adjust accordingly and more than likely you're going to take kemba slightly ahead of Trey young even though Trey young might be the better pick as far as stats go. And then we came up with real world scoring because oddly enough fantasy basketball out there has strange formulas to do their scoring where if you get one three-pointer per night you get a bonus and if you hit a certain percentage of three pointers you get a bonus and that's not real world. Yes efficiency is rewarded in the real world but it's rewarded by you having better numbers and your team doing better as a result. So it still comes down to ultimately what a person's numbers are. Scoring rebounds assists blocks and steals. The big five. So we built in some bonuses for things like triple doubles and high percentage games and double doubles, and you would pick a team defense and it was simple because if you held your opponent under a certain point total and if you held them under certain percentages, you get the idea. the reason I'm bringing all of this up is because as a result of this you can't use traditional fantasy scoring outlets torun your league. You can use Yahoo fantasy for your draft and to manage your roster and to do 90% of your scoring but there's no way to build into your scoring setups, the bonuses that we had for team defenses and for individuals getting triple doubles and things like that. So as a result for 20 years, I did manual scoring in a spreadsheet and had to email it out to everybody the next morning on saturdays. And as a result, myself especially because I did the scoring but alsothe other guys in the league because they were always paying attention to what was happening with their own players as well as their opponents. But as a result we became much more focused on real stats and something that I noticed over the years and I used to complain about constantly to my friends, was this: the thing that you talk about, how people are paying attention to scoring but not rebounding, has always always been the case! ALLLLLWAYS. IT WOULD DRIVE ME NUTS THAT THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERED IN YOUR BOX SCORE TI ESPN AND TO YAHOO SPORTS AND PLACES LIKE THAT, WAS YOUR POINT TOTAL! Reggie Miller towards the end of his career still made the box scores every single night and by box scores what I'm talking about is the ticker on ESPN or whatever Sports network, and for example let's use ESPN again. When ESPN would flash scores let's say and not do a full breakdown of a game. Or if they were doing a brief breakdown that was later in sports center let's say and not the leading story that they gave a couple minutes to, they would always show the score up on the screen or to the side while they were showing some highlights let's say and then underneath the score they would have maybe the top player or two from each team. And their little stat line next to them. The newspapers would do the same kind of thing. they might do a little paragraph about a game and then at the bottom they would do the stat lines from the top couple guys in the game. In those circumstances the tickers the little stories in the newspaper whatever, the stat line they focused on the most and the only one they ever cared about! Only only! Was scoring. Reggie Miller at the end of his career was on the ESPN ticker and on the box score little highlight things like that almost every damn night, because he'd get 21 points or 23 points. But if you actually looked at his box score. You would see that he had 21 points one steal what assist no rebounds no blocks and he did nothing but try to get open and shoot the three that was it. He did not do a ton to help his team win other than scoring. And that's great but I'm just trying to point out that there is always been an inordinate amount of focus in scoring in basketball. Maybe it wasn't reflected as much in contracts but I don't believe that to be true either. it seemed to be that because you scored a lot you had a higher profile and the higher your profile the bigger your contracts were. it used to drive me insane as somebody that really paid attention to the actual detailed box scores and everybody's individual stats because I had to use them and know them for my league. You would see Kerry Kittles shown up next to the nets score on ESPN that night having scored 22 points, meanwhile Jason Kidd drove that offense, was not a horrible defender, and had 14 points 12 assists and 10 rebounds to go with two steals. And his 22 points for rebounds and two assists was the guy who got the Love on ESPN and as a result the higher profile which led to bigger contracts in the long run or more marketing money from endorsers. so like I said I was hanging on your every word and I'm not saying I disagree with your premise. I'm on board with everything you said except for that one thing about how scoring is way way more important now that it was back then. Maybe somehow it was rewarded differently, but it certainly was not appreciated any differently. It is always always been the primary focus when it comes to fans and the media. Just look at jordan. The guy was the greatest score of the league and it seemed just about, at least since the '60s, and from 84 until they finally broke through in 91, it was him scoring too much and the focus on his scoring that was holding them back. He needed wingman, he needed a coach to reel him in a little bit, he needed to share the ball and rely on other people to help them win. But the oohs and aahs we're all for Jordan, which translated to marketing dollars. Both for his team and himself.

Faster pace mean nothing, its the number of field goal attempts that show you how a player would perform, because even if the pace was slower, players like Iverson, MJ and Kobe took way more shots pg than Lebron, KD or curry. In his prime between 98-99 and 04-05 when Iverson won 4 scoring title, he averaged 29.1 ppg, but with an efg% of .438 and 24.6 FGA pg. Now lets compare to 7 lebron season between 04-05 and 10-11 : Lebron averaged 28.7ppg, about the same as Iverson, but with an efg% of .522 and 20.8 FGA pg, so he was way more efficient and it was in the same era. So pace doesnt mean shit, its the same with MJ, he had an efg% of .509 and Lebron .542. You mean the year he averaged 18% from 3 on 27.8 attempts per game? You want that guy playing like today and taking more 3s? Today’s era would prove most beneficial to players who were extent efficient but with limited chances from 3 and limited shot attempts per game, hence the mentions of Arenas, Nash, and Parker. Today’s era would not help the midrange jumper guys who are objectively not good at threes allowed to take as many shots as they wanted and resulted in taking 28 shots a game in their era. For the record, Curry’s 30 ppg season came from 20.2 FGA/game, meaning he had 1.5 points per shot. MJs 37 pt season? 1.3. Jordan was objectively a worse scorer, he just for damn near 40% more shots every game. Do me a favor and look at any player who’s won an MVP in the last decade, find their points/shot to find their overall efficiency, then multiply by 28 to scale them up to Jordan’s shot tendency. Just for an example KD in averages 43 ppg in 13-14 with 28 shots a game using this prorated method.

Zone defense allows PF and C to stay close to the paint without being called for illegal defense. The Bulls dynasty thrived in baiting defenses into committing illegal defense violations, and now that’s a weapon MJ would not have anymore. Player who drive to the hoop well in today’s game, what do they love more than anything? ISO 1v1 matchups, that’s ALL that was allowed in the 90s. MJ played in an era where every time he had the ball, he was in the situation that offenses today would love. MJ very seldom had C and Forward converging in him in the paint and when they did, it’s because he didn’t float the ball, but rather went for the down and around reverse layup which allowed defenders to come off their man. MJ said it himself after the 04 rule change, he hated zine defense and he couldn’t operate the same way because zone’s full intent is to limit stand out offensive stars

Would like him to explore the part about the hand check rule more. If you can’t put your hand on the offensive player then you have to back off so they don’t dribble past you. That gives you room to raise up and shoot. The game started to evolve once that rule changed. I agree that players are better shooters nowadays but that’s a byproduct of what I said above not because they’re more skilled. If you watch Hakeem’s post move you can’t say he’s not as skilled, but instead had to match his skill with physicality. All these teams chucking up 3s has led to the demise of the low post game, which in turn makes games boring because there’s hardly a difference in style between teams.

Wasted possessions? You understand that a 33% 3 pt shooter is statistically identical to a 50% 2p shooter. Any player who is 33% from 3 is statistically wasting attempts by not taking 3s. The game just got smarter and realized a 20 ft 2 is useless and would rather take a 23.5 ft 3 with the same efficiency. Scoring is all about maximizing you attempts, and virtually every player’s 2 pt shot is maximized from extremely close range via dunk or layup, and virtually every player who takes 3s consistently scores more points/shot than even elite midrange shooters.

@@holdenfegan1613 here's the thing... Basketball isn't played in a vacuum, shots aren't taken in a vacuum. Those guys are almost always gonna be better in playoffs/crunch situations than someone like harden who lives in the paint and from 3 but doesn't score from everywhere else. Just shooting 3s and layups/dunks is a great way to win in the regular season but I challenge you to find a team over the last 6 years who have won championships by only shooting 3s and layups/dunks.

@aaronghunter3 жыл бұрын
The thing is, there are few specialists in the midrange. Remember, one of the greatest midrange shooters left in the league is DeMar DeRozan, leading the Spurs and putting up credible All-Star numbers but unable to push them to the playoffs this season or get an All-Star berth. When he led the Raptors with Lowry, they couldn't make it over the Cavaliers, none of whose stars focused on the midrange. Even an efficient, confident midrange shooter with good playmaking and court vision is fighting an uphill battle. Meanwhile, Lebron changed his game over the years to fit the league, dialing down his defensive intensity and developing an exterior shot. Lebron is, and was, a capable defender but defense is a less efficient use of energy with more risk of both injuries and fouls.

@@UKWizdakey2lyfe I started watching around his draft class and I love the man but, look at his career in the “grit n grind” Era and you notice he was struggling to stay healthy due to heavy defense, and his body not holding up to it. He’s someone who simply wouldn’t survive a decade in the hand-checking Era💯

Not really. Look at the Olympics just finished in Tokyo. Much higher scoring than previous Olympics. Players scoring over 40 points (remember FIBA games are 40mins not 48mins) regularly and refs allow much more contact than NBA and dont award fouls for every little thing. It all has to do with with positionless basketball and new thinking from analytics. Once the narrow roles of players was dispensed with it opened up much more efficient scoring. There is no reason why the 5 can't shoot 3s if he's good at it. Go back to 2000s or 1990s and coaches wouldn't allow your big centre to shoot 3s just because that wasn't the way things were traditionally done.

@@stevonwhite8933 You dont get it. The reason the "grit n grind" era is gone is because coaches worked it wasn't the most efficient way to win.

I also believe the recent offensive rebound shot clock change from 24 to 14 seconds could have had an impact into making the game faster and possibly leading to more possessions per game leading to more scoring opportunities
@teal29133 жыл бұрын
Yeah it literally forces you to play nearly twice as fast after getting an offensive rebound than you would have if u had the full shot clock back

@@teal2913 i hate this rule so much. you shouldn't be penalised with a shortened shot clock for hustling for an o board. pace is already crazy fast why do you want it faster? (i know its basically to keep the casual fan entertained but still)

@@conayoll I actually like it but it should be 16 seconds instead of 14, 14 seconds seems random af, at least 16 seconds makes sense because that’s the time you get to after crossing half court.

@@1jaythefinessa 14 seconds is the time clock resets to when a team commits non-shooting foul while shot clock is less than 14, maybe that's what they were going for

I mean if you look at the fast paced 80s, they had some insanely high scoring numbers with high efficiency. Everything is a cycle. Then throw in the 3 pt shot.

My dad used to always talk about those high scoring 80's days. Said the games were horrendous. Dudes just walking full court and getting easy layups. Ticky tack fouls just as bad as you see today and pretty much no defense even by todays standards. Maybe the same could be said of todays game except instead of layups we're shooting threes, but I ain't watching a bunch of skinny dudes hit open layups for 48 minutes.

@@siddharthpatil2683 Just watch any early to mid 80's game highlights. Dudes didnt play defense till guys got close to the rim and most of the dudes we're as skiinny as college players today. The game was horrible to watch aside from Larry Bird and Magic. Then Michael came along and the rest is history. The 80's were hard overrated sadly.

i seriously think i watch this video once a day. jxmy broke things down so well here. i'm a casual basketball fan and watch hockey a lot more. there's a lot of similarities with how both games are played now and, to me, this just makes more sense. i think you can still have your roles and plans of play of course, but keeping things fluid in my opinion just makes for more fun games both for players and spectators. very interested to see how things progress in the next few years. Jxmy, well done here.
