This movie was filmed just outside my hometown of Pierre, SD. Some of my classmates were the native children. I never saw Kevin Costner, but my older brother, who worked at the local movie theater, saw him frequently. The theater also rented movies and Costner came in at least once a week to rent movies. Costner was very kind to people who came up to him to meet him.

Kevin Costner broke his back filming this movie. During the Buffalo hunting scene... he was doing his own stunts.. and his horse ran into another stuntmans horse... he fell and broke his back. But he got back on and finished the scene, then went to the hospital... it was a crazy filming experience according to everyone. Check out the making of this movie. Great reaction. Thank you. 😊

It would make sense for the Navajo to have one but not the Sioux. They're nomadic and they're not going to carry that stupid thing around. Plus the Spanish never got to this area. That's actually my least favorite scene in the movie.

The native Americans didn't just make use of the 'buffalo' (they're actually American bison - the film got it brong) for food and furs, they made use of the bones for tools and various other parts of the animal for different uses. In short they tried to make as much use of it as possible, while the white hunters basically just skinned them and left the rest of the dead animal to rot where they found it.

Europeans called native Americans 'Indians' because they originally thought they landed in India, for they didn't know America existed. Y they never changed the term, I'm not sure, maybe stubbornness or ignorance, or a combination of both. The same could b said for y they called bison 'buffalo', they originally thought they were buffalo because they looked somewhat similar, & then they just never changed the name until later (some people still call bison 'American buffalo') But in terms of the movie using those words, it is historically accurate as that's how people spoke back then

The character of Stands With a Fist is actually inspired by the story of Cynthia Ann Parker, who was held captive by the Comanche from the age of 8 when they attacked the family's settlement on the Texas plains. She was raised by the Comanche and eventually married a chief, Peta Nocona. When she was re-captured by Texas Rangers 24 years later, she could not adapt back to white society and her last years were rather sad and tragic. Her legacy was in her oldest son, Quanah Parker, who became known as the last chief of the Comanche when all who remained were confined to a reservation.

Do yourselves a favor and google the documentary series called “500 nations”. It’s narrated by Kevin Costner and covers a large portion of the tribes, or “nations”, and their lives, lore, and fate. It is VERY well done and super respectful of the people. Some people say America has no history or culture, especially the modern day Europeans. They are just looking at the history of the USA, but overlooking the people that were here before my ancestors. America has MORE history and culture though, they are just ignorant of the facts. The series “500 nations” could help solve a lot of that.

It is not my intention to start an argument but, in all honesty, I have to say that nobody in Europe says "America has no history" because when we say "America" we also refer to Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, etc... I know that in the US you use "America" as a synonym for the US. But, outside the US, nobody does that.

As far as what happened to the Lakota Sioux, today they have reservations in North & South Dakota and about half of them live on one of those. The largest one is called Pine Ridge and is about 3,500 sq miles. By comparison, Jamaica is about 4,250 sq miles. The poverty rates on reservations is supposed to be pretty high though.

Dances with Wolves always reminds me of something that happened to me around the very same time the film was released in theaters in 1990. Back in the late 80's, I befriended a guy at work, he was in his late 20's, as was I. He had moved here a few years prior from a foreign country I knew very little about. He had a beautiful girlfriend, she too was from a foreign country, though not the same country as he. The two of them met as young children in a contrasting area bordering their respective countries. His family was quite poor, hers was better off, not rich, but far from poor. They had to hide their friendship (that grew into a 'relationship') because their respective countries were enemies. Coincidentally, he had a kid sister, who, at the time I met him, was 18 and his girlfriend had an older brother about the same age as him. When I met them they were planning to be married. YES, ALL of them! The 4 of them were going to be married on the same day. When the day arrived, I wasn't surprised to see some of their respective families and some friends from their respective countries, both sets of parents had to fly, but some family and friends had also made their new lives here in the U.S., I was however, disappointed to see how the parents of one family refused to speak to the other 'side' of the family, yet the whole while during the ceremony and the reception/party both sides of the family & the friends, of the generation of the 'kids' getting married, seemed to 'get along' as you would expect from a typical wedding. I later learned how uncommon this was. My friend was understandably disappointed with my ignorance regarding the conflict between the two countries from which he and his bride were from, but he just chuckled and said he understood. During the party, he & his new wife graciously tried to educate me in a brief, but profound way, what was going on back in their 2 countries. They told me that when they were growing up, their parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, all the "Old" people, would speak so very badly of the other country and the people, how they hated anyone from the other country, that it was the same for all the other kids on each side of the border they grew up with. Yet in this little area where they were growing up, kids from both sides of the border, against the wishes of their families and communities, would often play together. They grew up together having to keep it all a secret. Sure, some of the kids in the area would adopt their ancestral hatred for the other country and it's people, but many did not, and, obviously, neither did these two sets of newlyweds. When the two couples joined together in a 4 people hug at the conclusion of a dance, at the reception, there was a cheer from the attendees unlike any I had ever heard before and seeing so many tears of joy on so many faces was touching, more and more every time I reflect upon it. You see, he was Palestinian, and she was from Israel. Yes, even now, after 35 year since their wedding, their two countries are still 'enemies. In the months after the wedding I learned more about the conflict between their respective countries and voiced my wish that more people in their respective countries would see things like they did, they, the newlyweds, were, of course, way ahead of me in their wish for the same. I repeatedly suggested... I remember shouting, "Someone needs to do a book or documentary on you guys!". Unfortunately, not long after their wedding, my life went in a different direction and I lost track of Omar and his beautiful Hannah, (I can't remember the names of their brother and sister), but every so often I think about all of them and how I wish their story was made into a book or documentary. Perhaps someone has, but I am ignorant of either's existence. In any case. I hope they are well, that all of their families and friends are likewise doing well, despite the saddening turmoil that seems to be never ending between their two countries. I am so sad that the spark of hope they gave me 35 years ago, a hope that they were a start of a trend that would evolve into a peaceful resolution for their peoples, has not gone on to have become harmonious relations between their peoples, My heart is broken, you see, in my youthful enthusiasm, (naivete), back then I had expected (hoped) to see such in my lifetime, yet I am now 63 and war rages on, death, carnage and hatred still prevail over peace and love. The Sioux were and still are a remarkable people, in this movie the Sioux represent too many people and cultures that have fallen victim to the despicable and horrendous acts perpetrated at the hands of the war mongers that scar the history of the man. I take solace in that even though countries may be at war with one another, many of the people of those countries desire peace despite the acts of their governments or their ancestors and they practice friendship and peace as individuals, whenever they can, like Dances With Wolves, Stands With A FIst, Kicking Bird, Wind In His Hair, Smiles A Lot, and so on... like Omar, Hannah, and their brother and sister and their friends. One can hope. Please forgive me for my longwinded story. I've been aching to tell it over the past months and I guess you kicked my butt into gear into finally taking the time to tell it. I thank you for that and I THANK YOU for your wonderful Reaction to Dances With Wolves. I wish you both much success in all your endeavors, thanks again and God Bless you & yours, now and always.

You are the only channel I have ever found that watched the extended version of this. It is one of the best but also 1 of the longest movies ever made. This version of dances with wolves is the same length of time as the unextended versions of both the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers combined. This version gives you all sorts of stuff that you don't get in the original. Like we get to see why the original soldiers abandoned the fort you don't get that in the regular version. And there are 3 or 4 meetings with the chief between just his people without John that aren't in the regular version. They also show us Stands with a fist learning about her husband being killed and that is the saddest scene that they did not include in the regular version.

Not sure if you ladies have heard but Kevin Costner has made a western film coming out this year. And it looks promising. I think he's the last guy to care about these type of western style films. 1 of the best movies I've ever seen. Whenever I come across it on TV I have to finish it. Same as 5th Element. Also some people look down on this movie because they say it has the white savior complex. I disagree wholly. He was "saved" by the natives. Up to that point he never truly knew who he was as John Dunbar. He finally found himself when all that was left was a Sioux named Dances With Wolves.

3:05 The union soldiers attacked because the confederate soldiers got distracted and waisted their initial shots on Lt. Dunbar. During this era, reloading weapons took quite some time and the delay could have been enough to lose a battle if the enemy can charge in with fully loaded rifles ready to fire as we saw in this scene. Smart move from the union commander to quickly identify the situation and taking advantage of it.

I would just like to say, it was an absolute pleasure to watch your insightful, emotionally invested reaction. FYI - Just one thing you seemed to miss was the significance of the scene when John Dunbar/Dances with Wolves interrupts The Sioux's ceremony. They were actually performing a Buffalo Dance, with the intention of invoking the appearance of the Buffalo. After their initial anger at his uninvited visit & rowdy disruption of the ceremony, they realize he is actually bringing news of the Buffalo. For them this carries great spiritual significance. He has brought the answer to their prayers! Beautiful film & a beautiful reaction ladies!

My reaction was similar to yours down to the tears at the end of the movie. This movie is such a great classic! So I'm the beginning of the movie when he was like "this is my post" and he wasn't going to leave. Well in the military your orders are to never leave your post until relieved of your duty. So that was his mindset going into it especially being an officer.

When I first saw this movie I had a similar response to yours. I felt a tear at the end, when his best friend was leaving, a man who he once resented. The scope of my sadness was the understanding at the end that the Siox and other tribes were to lose their land and way of life. This represents the history of the world, not just north America, and that ins the true sadness, that we as humans have aggressive nature towards other humans and creatures. Only God knows why.

At 2:22, there are reasons they missed. 1. Rifling for guns wasn't present in most guns, yet. Thus, the round shots wouldn't go straight. That's how all wars involving guns prior to the civil war worked. Many rifles came around, with the rifling to give the bullet/shot a spin that would keep it going straight. 2. Lots of fighters were more of a militia, and thus were amateurs. They may not be the best with a gun. They may not aim leading ahead of the movement of their target. 3. They spent a long time not shooting; it had been days of little action. Having something to shoot at would normally involve someone hunkered down in the opposing line that isn't moving much. But they suddenly had an unexpected target that was rapidly moving. 4. One does not shoot the horse. The soldier is the threat, and one doesn't want one's own horses killed by enemies. Thus, rules of war tended to form to avoid things that can lead to chaos or the killing of entities not directly harming you. Those are a few thoughts.

Keep making those good connections, it's what really matters, keep a good heart and you will find them. Good reaction ladies to a brilliant and moving film. You picked up on some important notions like the importance of always giving back, and asking first, rather than just taking.

The dead bird is a gift from the wolf. My cat brings me dead birds sometimes. Some cultures it is an omen and yes it be one for the Sioux too as I am Sioux too but its a bond with Dunbar and the wolf

Love your channel. It's a great upload as always... I love this movie. I've watched this movie many, many times. The first time i saw this movie, i was 7 years old.... after all these years, I didn't know there was an extended version to this movie... the version that you just watched was the extended version, I know this movie so well I could catch every bit of the added footage. It was nice, though, to get more context on certain scenes. This is a really really great movie, one of the greats produced in the 90s... probably some of the best movies ever made were made in the 90s... this is one of my all time favorites, I'm glad you two were able to see it, surprised me a little when I saw you posted this, very few first time watchers have this excellent movie posted in their pages. Keep up the great movies you two, I hope you enjoy them... I'm a huge movie fan, I've probably seen almost every great movie out there worth watching... many times... it's really fun to see you two watch these movies, it gives me a little nostalgia and reminds me of when I saw them for the first time. such good films... They are always fun to re-watch, you always catch a new detail or hidden easter eggs. And they just get better with time. Love your channel as always. Keep up the great work and great picks. 👍

I’ll always love this movie. That line in the wedding scene, “I was so focused on her that I forgot everything around me”, reminds me of my own wedding. I speak very good Japanese, but I couldn’t tell you one thing they said during my wedding, not one word. But 18 years later I could tell you every sparkle in my wife’s eyes or every hair framing her face.

Most tribes were not hostile until pushed and there are MANY tribes in the America's with different languages and beliefs. Also, when Wind in His Hair, charges the lieutenant he was doing Counting Coup. Which is a thing where you let your enemy live and show them you could have killed them, but you let them live. As for the kids who stole the horse it's a great honor to raid and steal horses from your enemies and the whole reason the kids were talking about how the tribe would sing about them and tell stories about them doing this. Also, when the boys stand up near the lake, they could smell the lieutenant because most people not from America were not as hygienic and it was believed some tribes could smell the Calvary when downwind of them. This movie hit a lot of first settler Interactions. With the white woman being adopted into the tribe it was very common for tribes to adopt people into their communities because of Diseases and famine from the first settlers. Not being able to defend territories from enemies and decreasing population it was the best option was to adopt into the tribes which a lot confused with slavery.

Great Reaction.... Yes, John was trying to commit suicide and became a hero starting a counter-attack.... The "Button-Holder" is a plate that goes around the Brass Buttons to allow you to Shine/Polish the buttons without getting the cleaning/polishing paste on the material and discoloring/damaging the fabric.... There is "Making of" footage showing how they did the buffalo hunt, using animotronics for the ones that were "killed"..... Graham Greene, Rodney A Grant, Floyd "Red Crow" Westerman, Tantoo Cardinal, and Wes Studi are awesome Native Actors......
