The finds keep on coming in Midland, Texas, in this week's episode of Barn Find Hunter. A lunch conversation with a local man leads Tom to Jeff Roland, who, until several years ago, operated a Mustang restoration and repair shop. Having shifted the focus of his business, Jeff is eager to sell any of the 100-plus cars on his lot. Mustangs abound, including a rare K-code model, along with more Ford, Chevy, and GMC trucks than you can shake a stick at.

@@n0tlance314 while true the bones were solid and easily restored. On top of that the costs involved in making one off parts has come down drastically. Things can be scanned, 3d printed with ease these days and if needed they can be cast or carved from billet etc. Whereas ten years ago it could take weeks of skilled labor to make a single part or pattern that can be done in hours today.

The mystery LaFrance truck engine is definitely a V12 (that 60 degree v angle might make it appear to be an inline 6) . It must be one of those early flathead designs where the camshaft and rockers (later flatheads got rid of those and their valves are direct acting) sit in the valley of the engine and the valves basically horizontally. The valves and the top of the piston are at an angle and the combustion chamber is reverse wedge shaped. A good example I can think of is a Lycoming V8 used in Cords.

Hi. My dad had a 39 Ford Prefect. I was born in 44 and it was the family car until 1953. My uncle, a motor mechanic, used to say of the little flathead four, "you can't kill it with an axe". However, Dad broke leaf springs quite often.

Sometimes KZbin's related videos algorithm turns up real gems like this series. I raced through all 40 episodes and enjoyed everything. It is brilliant to see your little team exploring America and revealing this history and automotive charm that clings to existence despite all the regulations, real estate development and car crushers. I remember in the late 90's I found a website for an auto wreckers called Gilly's in Placerville, California which had pictures of some of their 800+ stock of cars. It closed down in 2001 and there's only a handful of cars now if any. Not sure if the rest were crushed or moved on. English scrap yards are becoming very rare and access to the remaining ones isn't as relaxed as some you've been to, but I guess that's an issue everywhere when you deal with different people. Your series is a delight to watch and makes me wish I was doing something similar. Cars have been my primary interest in life but I haven't been in the communities and I haven't involved or immersed myself as much as I wanted to. I spend all my spare money on storage for a few rescued classic cars that by most people's standards aren't important, but for me it doesn't have to be the top spec or the lowest production number. I loved almost every car you've shown in your 40 episodes and that includes ones that were just background to the feature cars. I love it if it's wrecked, rotten or mediocre, but I still appreciate a stunner when I see one. Thank you so much for a brilliantly produced series of superb quality and great interest. I am so impressed with Tom's knowledge and ability to talk to almost anyone. The filming, photography, locations and story are fantastic and I am already craving more.

"Barn Find" is a good term to use, when what they really have is "We have a car stored in this garage or storage area" - but I'm not sure where the "Find" comes in, when everybody knows it's there. It kind of reminds me of Columbus "Discovering" an area where there is already people. In this case they're "Finding" something that everybody knows is there. When I think of a "Barn Find", my mind conjures up some type of a big barn or storage area - that somebody just had an "inkling" there was a car there. Got the owner's permission to check it out, and lo and behold there is a car there that the owner wasn't aware of - and it winds up being rare = a "Find". - - - - AND - I guess the second half of the story is he wants to sell it for cheap or reasonable - Which is hardly the case with the cars that Hagerty shows - they want top dollar and then some most of the time. === However on KZbin, a "Barn Find" is any car that's in a storage area. It doesn't matter if the person barely knows they had it, OR, If they know everything about it, and they just couldn't sell it, couldn't get their price, whatever. ANY car that's stored - is a barn find. - But barn find sounds a lot better than, "we got an old car in the garage that nobody wanted to pay our price - or we couldn't decide what we wanted to do".

I like some rat rod. When you look at this bus, I would hate to be in an accident in this machine. A lot of metal that CAN'T protect you. A roll over would be fatal. You figure that you would cage it considering the access to metal and welding equipment you have. The rat theme on the outside is ok but inside is too much rusty metal that close to you and others riding in that death trap. Just an opinion.

In the uk if you wanted to build your own Vehicle you need to get an SVA inspection to make sure its road legal then every year it would need to pass an MOT test not to mention the road Tax each year. You guys have so much freedom to drive what you want.

Here in los angeles you can drive any classic car even if its a rusted toaster as long as its registered and you pay your tags. No smog test for classic cars. Car culture here is amazing. @@ronniewilson6597 tags here in the California are issued when you pay the registration yearly. Youll get the yearly sticker to slap on your plate. These come from the Dept of Motor Vehicles. Similar to the Uk i assume. Not sure how the other states work though. Im from CA.

@Ronnie Wilson, In the US Tags/Plates don't have to stay with the vehicle for life like the UK. Each state issues their own style plates. All US plates share a common shape and size. If your state Dept of Motor Vehicles approves it you can put almost anything that you want (no obscenities, etc.) on your plate(s). All states require a rear plate, some like California, require a front plate too.

I see fire trucks that are every bit as rare as that that are perfectly good drivers and a lot of them are very excellent drivable showable condition Less Than 15000 $. I passed up a truck for 5,000 dollars, of 392 Hemi in it was an 58 Dodge. Fire trucks do not draw a lot of interest they're expensive to maintain their very expensive to insure to drive and they're practically useless because they're too big and you can only take him out during the Spring on the parade days. The guy is extremely way high on a lot of his prices on what he wants. There's so much stuff on the market right now it's not even funny. The minimum it would be for any one of those old units he wants a person would put in probably 25 to $55,000 just to make it par back restored. You can go buy something that's already done for that much or less and have it the next day completely done. So add another 10 to 20 thousand on top of that what he wants, and it's not even worth it, no way.

I had a friend a number of years ago who had a 1952 Ford fire truck in excellent rust-free condition that originally carried a water tank. It only had 20+ thousand miles. He removed the tank and put longitudinal benches in the bed to make it more useful for parades. After a number of years he decided to sell it for around $5000. He tried to sell it for a couple of years and got no takers. He finally reduced the price to $2500 before he finally sold it. He said that if it had a flatbed he could have gotten his original price in a heartbeat. There's just not that much demand for fire trucks.

We had those ford 10 prefects (a.k.a. ford defects) out here in New Zealand. They have transverse leafspring front suspension and a narrow wheel base . You hit anything that vaguely reassembles a corner above 25 mph and they fall over. Also not known for being fast or liking steep hills. From memory they also had vacumn wipers that stop working when you need them most. That landrover is an early one too with the headlights in the grille and not in the fenders. We had them too.

The prefect was UK Fords effort. Anyone who has owned or worked on Model T's,A;s or V8's will recognize the scaled down running gear .Thats a rare one,it's a 1939 and if was in the UK it would be snapped up immediately. my younger Brother had a 48 Defect as his first car in South Auckland which was in really nice condition...until he got it. 😂

These days a person is so much better off buying a decent original car,a so - called "running restoration", than buying something that requires a total restoration. Unless,of course, you are looking for a project. The cost of labor and parts is getting out of sight for most people. There are still a lot of decent mid priced (5000-10000) cars that you can drive and enjoy as opposed to having a project sitting in a garage for years. You need very deep pockets to restore a car, even if you can do some work yourself.
