Kedarnath is situated on the Kedar peak of the Himalayas in uttarakhand, the highest of the twelve Jyotirlingas of the country, Kedareshwar Jyotirlinga. Kedarnath Dham and temple is surrounded by mountains on three sides. There is a confluence of not only three mountains but also five rivers - Mandakini, Madhuganga, Kshirganga, Saraswati and Swarnagauri. Some of these rivers no longer exist but the Mandakini, a tributary of the Alaknanda, still exists today. The Kedarnath yatra truly begins from Haridwar or Rishikesh.
