The UV filter is designed to screw to the lens. Giving you the choice to use that or the blank ring as the lens/filter interface. It has allowed me to put the blank ring on one lens and the UV filter on another and now I'm able to use the other two filters in both my 72mm lenses.

Would the filter that attaches infront of the lens scratch off the paint on the thread of the lens?

Pretty sure that the MCUV filter is designed to screw directly to the lens (hence why the magnet is slightly weaker)

I think you're correct. But I can't verify that because like a dumb ass I already lost it at a car show I took my son to. Had I looked at it with my reading glasses on it probably would have been obvious.
