There is around 45 million Roos in Australia, i think they can be sustainably harvested no problems.

Those who claim that the hunting of kangaroos is cruelty and not being done humanly, are the same people with nothing to lose. They're not impacted by the destruction kangaroos cause and they certainly don't have anything to offer society like farmers do. To claim that these farmers and hunters are kangaroo killers, the same can be said for kangaroo lovers who are farmer killers. You can't have it both way! I'll always support farmers, who in turn feed the rest of society, including kangaroo lovers.

I like having kangaroos on our farm, but they are very destructive and breed like nothing else. They need to be managed.

Well balanced story by SBS, we have the guys doing the job, the land/business owner, the ecologist and the conservationist, 3 out the 4 groups want balance and sustainability, one runs on anxious unchecked emotion for a wild animal that will hurt you in a confrontation. In my life time on our farm Kangaroo numbers have exploded due to the availability of food and water as the land was developed and introduced weeds were eliminated to increase grazing area also the absence of predators. Harvesting is easily sustainable and antihalation not necessary, its all about balance

The Bambi. Cute and cuddly when young, but when fully grown Kangaroos are dangerous and they do carry diseases. So yes their numbers need to be controlled.

Only SBS and the ABC could come up with this stuff, words like "slaughter" and of course the joeys. I've been through properties where the whole hillside moved at night and city based people tell us there' no problems. Emotive tripe like hugging joeys, when you've got a crop in the ground and the roos move in by their hundreds then you are watching your dollars go down the drain.

I appreciate the opposite perspectives on hunting. Both sides are understandable, but in the end managing populations is crucial for the welbeing of farms and the survival of other creatures.

Roo's in many parts of the country are in serious over supply, the careers themselves indicated this by saying that one third of their ward are from car incidents. They swarm out of bush land reserves and flood into private grass land doing massive amounts of damage to infrastructure along the way. Not to far from where I live there is a large area of Gov controlled land that is teaming with Roo's in an uncontrolled manner with large numbers, they started dying off and the community blamed poisoning. The end story was that after veterinary autopsy's, they had bred to such large numbers that they were killing themselves from the grazing worm burden. Roo's are a more than sustainable resource at the present that will not control it's self.

I respect both sides of this argument. I am a hunter and fisherman, but I believe if you don’t have the skills and stomach to hunt and harvest your meat you shouldn’t eat it. Personally taking an animals life in the wild is the best respect you can give the animal. It has lived free until that point. not grow in a feed lot for lazy people to enjoy the rewards just because they have the dollars to pay for it. Of course I buy meat as well. But if you pay money for any food something has been killed to supply it e.g trees wildlife the list goes on. No human can say there they don’t have a foot print on this earth

Comments that that the hunters are cruel. immoral etc is emotive & unsubstantiated. They aim for clean immediate kills (despite some facets being brutal and distasteful for some). If for no other reason than quick efficient kills take least time, & that's money. And livestock farming is a key element of Australia's economy, the animal lover faction would be able to afford a different lifestyle without it, and a few other rural industries.
