Some say that he used to drink alcohol, some say that he did not even touch alcohol.

Keshto Mukherjee is still remembered for his drunk characters in Hindi films. And will be remembered tomorrow also. As soon as the name of Keshto Mukherjee comes to mind, that face comes before the eyes, who was always seen waving like a drunkard on the film screen. Whereas he did not drink even a drop of alcohol to act as a drunkard.
Keshto Mukherjee had very small roles in films, but he won everyone's heart with his acting. No one could compete with Keshto Mukherjee in acting like a drunkard.
Although Keshto Mukherjee had to struggle a lot in life. They had to live in dirty and unhygienic places. There was not even a single grain of food to eat. But this 'fire' of struggle had heated Keshto Mukherjee and transformed him into 'Kundan'. That Kundan, which ruled the film screens as well as the hearts of millions of people for many decades.
We are going to tell you the story of this unique diamond's struggle, which is quite inspiring, and many people are unaware of it. This story was told by Keshto Mukherjee himself in an interview given to 'Stardust' magazine in 1981.
Keshto Mukherjee was born on 7 August 1925 in Kolkata. Since childhood, Keshto was inclined towards acting. That's why he became a part of street plays and received a lot of praise. In his thirty year long career, Keshto worked in 90 films. He started his career in 1952 with the Bengali film 'Nagrik'.
Ritwik Ghatak gave the first role of his career to Keshto Mukherjee. After this he appeared in Bengali films like 'Bari Theke Paliye', 'Ajantrik' and 'Jukti Takko Aur Gappo'. Keshto Mukherjee entered Bollywood with the 1957 film 'Musafir'. Since then he never looked back, and worked till 1996.
The last film of Keshto Mukherjee's career was 'Atank' in 1996. He was also seen in the 1981 film Khoobsurat starring Rekha and Rakesh Roshan. For this film, he received Filmfare's 'Best Performance in Comic Role' award.
Keshto Mukherjee had to go through a very painful situation before achieving the position he achieved in films. In the interview, Keshto Mukherjee, while sharing his struggle days, had said, 'I drink a lot. I started drinking when I left home to become a Bombay hero. I lived in a dirty and shabby room in the railway quarter. There was nothing to eat there, only to drink. I drank because I was frustrated. I had no work.
Keshto Mukherjee had further said, 'I used to drink so that I could sleep a little. I used to drink so that I could forget about the rats running around. The dog used to sleep next to me. I used to drink to forget the tension. It was only Daru who was my true friend. And it was alcohol due to which I gained popularity. Nowadays, if someone takes my name, the image of 'bewade' emerges in the mind. I can't betray my friend anymore. I still drink. There was only one day when I did not touch a single drop of liquor and that was my wedding day.
When Keshto Mukherjee was asked whether he gets tired of playing a role (of a drunkard) continuously? So in response Keshto Mukherjee had said, 'People want me to play the role of Bevda. I don't need to be afraid as long as I'm giving the people what they want.
But friends, what he said after this exposes the pain in the chest of the people working in the Hindi film industry. Keshto da said, I know I have no class. Nor do I boast of being a good actor. I know that I cannot reach heights in my career. But I don't want classes. I want money. By being classy I will not be able to feed my children.
Ahh ! If a great, an excellent, a brilliant artist, who has created history with his acting, folds his wings and limits his flight, just to fulfill human needs, then it can be called a very regrettable situation.
During his struggling days, Keshto Mukherjee had acted like a dog to get work in Bimal Roy's film, which is an interesting story. Actually, when Kesht came to Mumbai in search of work, he was not able to find work.
