As for looks, I think it has a lot to do with makeup artist, air of arrogance, and remoteness. When someone acts arrogant and/or looks remote, that actually may add points to his looks in certain types of environments. Mr Cheng Yi seems to be very warm and approachable. I have heard more than one account stating that he looks even better in person than on camera. I have also looked at pictures who are considered handsome but can't see any difference at all. Most of Mr Cheng Yi's early pictures give me the impression that he has been good looking.

It is a very moving story. I suspect that there might not be another like him again. Mr Cheng Yi seems to be unique in so many ways: strong family values, excellent upbringing, loving family and extraordinary personal attributes. These combinations ensure that despite all the challenges he faces in his entertainment circle, he has become a superb actor with an aura of nobility. I won't be surprised at all if his interpretation and presentation of the characters he plays are more liked or unforgettable by the viewers than those created by the original book authors, due to his high intelligence, comprehension ability and a touch of naivety. That touch of naivety might be missing from those authors, and I personally believe that it does make a difference. Since I have not read any non-Western authors, I am curious to hear from those who have read the books.
Hey, beauty is in the eye of beholder. As a matter of fact, Cheng Yi looked very unique in his earlier photos, rather attractive and manly (this is a senior citizen talking here.). To say "被嚇到的醜" is too much, and unkind. New to Chinese dramas, all the actors and actresses look so alike, like from a "cookie cutter". Just hope Cheng Yi preserves his natural look and innocence (not too much make-up, and dress elegantly like a gentleman), and won't be tainted by the entertainment industry.
