Testing and research carried out by K&N to determine if the oil from their air filters can be pulled off the filter.
And if so, would this oil cause a MAF sensor to fail.
►SUBSCRIBE / @drivetunemedia
In our experience MAF sensors generally do not develop problems. It is a very simple device (it has no moving parts) which cannot be damaged by oil.
The wire element is usually protected from the air stream ie air entering the engine does not normally have a straight shot at the wire as it is usually encased in a plastic case to protect it. If the air entering the engine does not have a direct shot at the MAF wire, it is hard for me to see the wire being hit by oil coming off an air filter, IF oil is even coming off the air filter in the first place.
However dirt & dust build up on the MAF wire can be a real problem, especially on higher mileage cars. If there is a layer of dirt covering the wire in the MAF sensor, the wire will be insulated from the air entering the engine. The will mean the temperature of the wire will be less effected by the air stream.
If the wire in the MAF sensor is not getting an accurate picture of the air, this can cause the engine to run at less than optimum.
In extreme cases it may even cause a check engine light.
However, most MAF sensors can usually be cleaned with basic hand tools, some Acetone /Isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds. This can be carried out by most people without any specialist knowledge.
In short, can oil come of a K&N air filter? Unlikely.
If oil did come off an air filter, could the oil cover the wire in the MAF sensor? Probably not
If some oil did hit the wire in the MAF sensor would this damage the MAF sensor? Extremely unlikely.

My new RAM: I installed a K & N filter. All seemed good then the day before a big trip on comes the engine light and I start getting crazy temp readings. It is the only modification I have performed. I have now removed the filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. The light is now off and only time will tell if my decision to remove the K & N was correct diagnosis.

Bought K&N filter years ago, after 6,000 miles I noticed a slight film from the filter to the throttle body. My truck still ran, but there was now a slight film. My mechanic cleaned the MAS and all parts from filter to throttle body, and he seen this before with K&N filters. Most people don't notice a problem because and trade in their vehicles every other year. I've seen a forest fire truck where the fine ash particles made it pass the K&N filter glue to the entire surfaces. Rather than talk about it throughout the video show your testing equipment at work.

A wonderful presentation by K&N to defend themselves against accusations that their highly engineered products can cause MAF sensor failures. They make great filters and I will continue to use them over all others in the market. I think the whole issue is the mechanics involved pointing the finger at K&N instead of the MAF sensor supplier.

Read the cleaning instructions properly. Some people think more oil is better, others say less is better. The trick with K&N is to let the oil soak in from the fresh air side for 1 hour at 20C then re apply oil to the less covered areas again from the fresh air side. I've been using them for years now all in MAF vehicles and all with ultra clean air boxes and no MAF issues.

I had K@N filter on my 04 3.0L Ranger Edge and finally went back to stock Motocraft paper filter because it was making engine idle between 1 @ 1.5K RPM at random times! When I went back to paper it idles perfectly at 650 RPM! I even used MAF cleaner but it didn't help? Just my opinion but think your vehicle's computer is dialed in for a stock filter and if you want to add K@N, you'd have to get your car dynod and chiped for increased airflow?

One of the main problems is that people soak the filter with oil. All it takes is a light coat that shows that the filter element has a red tint to it. It's funny, I've known engineers that can't follow simple instructions, then they blame the filter because they had it dripping with oil when they installed it.

I've had a K&N filter in my 1995 C4 Corvette for 22 years now. I have clean MAF and inside of air intake manifold shows no sticky oil residue. I do have a little oil residue but it is not from the filter. Engine compression is about the same as when the engine was first broken in. Of course I clean my K&N per instructions and do not "soak" the filter with the oil spray medium until point of leakage. This is the key: follow mfg. instructions!!

I was knee-deep in filter review and research and ended up choosing a k&n When all was said and done because of the performance in the 0 to 60 benchmarks even though the wix filter performed usually on par in that regard but I was concerned because I heard the oil in the filters would screw up sensors along the air path. I asked an employee at the auto parts store near me how often people came in complaining and they told me only around every four years or so so I felt pretty secure that I would not be one of them and that the chances would be slim. Well long story short, I think most of the people that did not complain where are the types that just didn’t notice the RPM changes. My car no revs just above 1000 RPMs at idle and is nowhere near as stable as before I started running this filter so I would say that the results are in. Now if K&n is willing to replace my sensorsI may change my mind

I just cleaned loads of oily gunk off my MAF sensor. Was only dirty on the filter side which is hard to see through the mesh, so it took me ages to diagnose the cause of terrible engine performance. The K&N Filter oil was absolutely responsible for fouling up my sensor over many years. They are good filters but you must clean your MAF sensor once a year if you use K&N.

Running K&N in my Duramax for over 10 years, no MAS issues BUT to say oil doesn’t come off the filter under any normal condition is BS! Oil drops off the filter and coats the inside of the air box and oil film travels up the air intake system and a very light film of oil coats the inside walls of the intake and sensors. For performance it’s K&N all the way but for maximum clean air to the turbo, OEM paper filters are hard to beat

their great filters i’ve been using them for over 20 years on car’s,truck’s and motorcycles with no issues, but when I clean them I’ll let them dry thoroughly overnight. if need be I’ll reinstall the old paper filter till the next day ensure the filter is bone dry. then lightly oil the incoming air side that’s it. the oil will pull itself through the filter. I think the problem is people spray too much oil on a wet filter and “poof” you have a mess. either way the sensors can be cleaned using “mass airflow sensor cleaner” if that doesn’t solve the problem then the sensor was on its way out.

I keep getting a lean running fault when temps are below 50 degrees with the K&N intake kit on a 2002 F-150. I clear the fault and pass the Texas inspection for the last six years. Why does everything work fine until the air temp drops below 50 degrees? In Houston,, below 50 degrees is a BLIZZARD, so I just keep clearing the fault and drive on. Nobody I know with factory air filter systems has this problems, several with K&N have got rid of their K&N because of this. I'm keeping mine!!! 19 MPG average with a crew cab 5.4 engine, over 220K. Never had a problem with OEM intake. But I NEVER got a 19 mpg average. Been driving the same route to work for years and same traffic in Houston. I'm keeping the 5.4 Triton and K&N for now. K&N=Not perfect,, but I can get around it!

Because it happens below a certain temperature, Id say it is because the engine is getting too much air (according to the ECU). Lean running fault would back this up and also explain the good fuel economy. Im not sure if it is something to worry about. Could be worth running a wideband on the car just to check it is not running too lean, like 16.5:1+

This sounds may stupid but it's a true story of mine.. I once owned 19?? Ford Ranger.. One of many oil change services, I took the truck to Jiffy Lube and the guy suggested me that I should change the air filter because it was getting dirty and I said "okay".. Three months later, I checked the air filter and I found out it was not a right air filter for the truck because it was right size in width but not in length.. The guy at Jiffy Lube cut off the length to fit the filter in the box and he didn't even cut it to the right length.. it was a good an inch opening.. So, I threw away that air filter and I didn't put any air filter since.. The car had 30,000 miles on it at that time.. I drove the truck to 127,000 miles and sold it.. The truck had no problem since the day I sold it.. Of course, I put a new air filter in the truck before I sold it to one of my dearest friend 😁😁😁.. I didn't hear any complaints form him up until today.. I understand if you don't want to be my friend..

Week later MAF / MAP sensors are going crazy and throwing errors. Checked inlets, pipes, sensors, all good. So sorry K&N but I wouldn't be using air filters which are causing several errors in my car. Each time I was getting an error, my turbo was completely off because ECU will protect it from any damage. I have screenshot each time it happened, investigated very carefully what seems to be a problem and sadly it is the K&N filter to blame....

Granted some products were excellent in the past for older cars. I recently ran into warranty problem with my Michelin tires due to cracks and dry rots by using tire shine products ( Amor All) that were well proven & popular in the past. The tire dealer and Michelin gave me hell and played the Blame Game on me.

So who are you going to believe. The manufacturer of after market parts or the auto manufacturer. Personally I've never trusted a dealer further than I could drop kick them and that has worked for me for 50+ years. Also I don't believe the hype from the after marked industry. I think the design of the mass air sensor is flawed if it is adversely affected by air borne dust or oil because you never either of those around cars or trucks.

Here’s some advice. Use the filter as long as you can out of the box. And after 30k miles just toss it away and buy another one. Fuck the cleaning and reusing. If you get a good filter for $50 that can last two years? Then that’s pretty good.

50.00 for a lifetime filter is much better than 50.00 for 2 years. If you keep your vehicle for 10 years as the average, you'll spend 250.00 on filters for 10 years. That's a no brainer, unless cleaning the filter is too much of a chore.

In my opinion, this has nothing to do with issues between the factory and K&N or the dealer and K&N, it has to do with issues between the dealer and the factory. Dealers have issues with the reimbursement rates paid by the factory for warranty work, they believe they are too low and have only gotten lower. Therefore, many dealers are always looking for some opportunity to push off the cost to the customer. If they can convince the customer into believing the issue is their fault for installing a K&N filter, they can get significantly more money for the same repair than they otherwise would have gotten from the factory.

I have never in my life heard of any salesman suggesting to NOT buy his product. These tests have been performed by those trying to sell their product. Yes, I've used K&N filters on carbureted engines, no worries there, and to be honest, I can't say for certain if they really are a better filter because I have no empirical data to suggest a conclusion. Marketing is designed to make the consumers think they have spent their money well, and hopefully create Brand Loyalty for repeat business. I'd think twice about using K&N on Fuel Injected engines because there WILL be some degree of oil suspended in the airstream. Whether or not it's significantly harmful would never be disclosed by the manufacturer, you can count on that. They have a business to run, and sales to be made.

There is no doubt that K and N filters are great for flowing more air. But just how much difference does it make? Can you actually see a difference on the dyno? Can you feel it in the seat of your pants? What are air filters designed to do? Aren't they designed to keep bad particles out of your engine? K And N filters flow more air but the only way you can do that is to have bigger air spaces between the filter medium, which translates into more junk in your engine. "Project Farm" has done an excellent video on different air filters and it turns out K and N were at the bottom for actually filtering out particles.

So... K&N says K&N isn't bad and "refused to allow our customer to be in the middle of a situation like this"-i.e. if a dealership claims K&N is at fault then they resolve it "one way or another." What does that even mean...? Do they threaten to sic their lawyers on them? They say they tested only 42 malfunctioning sensors where 19 were dead with no conduction and the remaining 23 were giving out-of-range results, of which 19 were damaged by contaminates that SHOULD HAVE BEEN FILTERED OUT BY THE FILTER! Not only is this not enough testing to be statistically relevant, but there is a conflict of interest because K&N's own lab is on K&N's payroll and is not going to come out and say "our most profitable product damages cars instead of protecting them like it's supposed to". Look... Phillip Morris also claimed cigarettes aren't bad for you. Exxon said leaded gasoline wasn't a health risk. This video is nothing more than propaganda. They don't say what killed the 19 totally dead filters, but they do say that their K&N oil on a MAF sensor could produce "awkward" voltages but that the air flow from the engine would clean off the oil after awhile. So now it's the engine's job to clean itself from contaminates put there by the sensor? Could it be that this would depend upon how much air flow there was and how long between engine runs the oil was left sitting on the sensor? Could it be that having some oil WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ATTRACT AND COLLECT CONTAMINATES on the MAF could act temporarily as a magnet for other particulates that will remain on the MAF sensor even after the K&N oil is gone? Just think about it. K&N is proven to filter out less of the dirt in the actual filtered air AND there is a liquid on the filter that is DESIGNED to attract and trap contaminates. If that liquid gets on your sensor it will also put other nasty shit on your sensor until the liquid is dry. Isn't the whole point of a filter NOT to let contaminates in, in the first place? My K&N came from the factory with BEADS of liquid on it AND holes big enough to see through. If it was actually a better technology than paper/cellulos filters then why in the world would ZERO car companies ship their cars with K&N filters pre-installed? Use your damn brain! If a company has to put out apologetic pseudo-science to defend a product that multiple lab tests have shown to be inferior at its primary purpose (filtration!!) then that should be a HUGE red flag to you. Being the official filter of NASCAR where engines last at most a few months is not inspiring either. If your filters don't harm reliability then why isn't it the official filter of Honda or Lexus?

I’ve used k&n air filters on multiple vehicles and multiple motorcycles and never had an issue. I think the problem comes when the consumer oils the filter after cleaning it and they apply too much oil. The excess oil gets sucked through the intake tube and collects on the MAF sensor and the throttle body.

Don't worry bout the MAF with an oiled filter, but DO worry bout the amount of particles that are passing through that cotton! I have a friend who does testing for many fields, including the race industry and he showed me his data on the amount of particles a K &N passes and it's a large amount. He tested WIx style OEM vs K N and the wix passed about .045 particle below 2-3 microns. The KN filter passed 7.8. that's a HUGE difference.
