Just a FYI: Champion Labs and Champion are two different companies. Hence the different part numbers. Champion Auto Parts is part of Federal-Mogul. Champion Laboratories / Champ Labs is its own company and they make oil filters for several companies (like Wal-Mart). They did not make this Champion filter.

@Balticblue9315 сағат бұрын
That is correct they are two different companies that make these particular filters. However, First brand owns Trico, Champion labs, Fram and many others. Champion labs make all the filters for the various brands including Fram. They standardized filters to save costs. For example, the Amsoil EAO/EA are identical as the Fram Endurance and Royal Purple Extended Performance.

Thanks for the great comparison. I'm fairly sure those older Champions are discontinued. They made a few different variants around that time. One comes in a black can with a silicone ADBV and there was the cheaper white version with the nitrile ADBV that you cut open. I bought a bunch of them from Rock Auto a few years back when they were on clearance for dirt cheap for a few different vehicles that I maintain. The K&N looks a lot better to me than the budget version of the Champion.

The K&N reminds me of other oil filters made in China, Vietnam, or S.Korea, pretty clean inside (little to no excess glue).

FWIW I've been using Champ filters for a long time now but I change oil every 3,500 miles. My engines always seem clean inside. I like them because they're cheap and still made in USA. The ones I use have the black nylon core inside.

Pete, Excellent video! K&N was the clear winner in the match up. I wonder if the age of the Champion filter (2017) had anything to do with how the media opened up and warped in areas. I would not use the Champion for fear those gap areas would rip and allow dirty oil to pass. Use the Ford filter on the van and it should just keep on running! Have a nice weekend!

Some of the Champion (Auto Parts, not Labs) filters are coming in an interesting cylinder package, which is a nice design and protects the filter quite well, but it's still just a so-so filter inside those.

Great Job, Pete, thanks for sharing, Robert! Could they make that Champion any more cheaply? The best thing i can say about the Champion is that it is clean and has no excess glueThen again excess glue would cost more money. K&N always seems to have good oil filters. I'd buy it with confidence.

Yeah bruh, hang ten and ride the waves of Champion (not to be confused with Champ Labs) "for professional use only" oil filter. lol The bypass is what's known as a 'clicker' type bypass. Normally used on very lowest tier filters, ie jobber/commercial. Lousy pleat spacing on it too. No efficiency rating for either, prefer to have one if possible. 'Of the two', I'd easily take the K&H here. Thanks to Robert for the OFs and you Whip for the vid. Have a great weekend!

Yes I have always used the Motorcraft FL820s. But unfortunately the quality has fallen off . I had 2 filters that the top end cap came off and you could see the oil was bypassing as well as lots of glue. 😢
@EpiLover3 сағат бұрын
@@robertsprout3701 That's most unfortunate. We've always used Motorcrafts in 5 different Fords and never had an issue in half a million miles, but it's been awhile since I've owned a Ford product. I'm wondering if Ford had to find a new supplier after MANN+Hummel bought Purolator. That could be the reason for the quality drop.

That Champion filter looks like an old fram or a blue light special filter. Definitely not Trico/Champ labs. That K&N looks incredibly professionally made. The can is super overkill though.

@jayjaynella453912 сағат бұрын
Not necessarily. When tradesman drop junk from their open trucks on the roads, a thinner oil filter housing is more likely to be penetrated and cause oil loss. Granted the extra metal would cause the car to use 0.000001 more gallons of gasoline over 200,000 miles which would cause substantial "climate change" resulting in all these fires in California.
