I have the CHA 17ft vertical and have been using it with a K8MRD ground spike. I can get the SWR down below 1.5 on 20 - 6 using 15 mike's 2.5m radials. Using a power-pole connector it's simple to setup. I am building the CAHR Ares this weekend to add to the pota collection. Also will be testing the 17ft vertical with a EMP cloth. Fun to experiment and play. 73 Bob WB6TIS

One of the best summary ever. Next step is to make an a-b test. Not those silly sideband comparison using the ear to decide. Just run WSPR/FT8 etc, which gives the most correct comparision.

Yeah, I agree. I usually use WSPR to test antennas

Great video! 👍🏻There is some much information in this video am going to have to watch again and take notes on the antenna document you shared.

Your CHA SS17 vertacle, I have that same antenna, except I use a faraday cloth for POTA... and it will easily tune on 20m 1:1 across the entire band. I just put a permanent marker mark around the antenna at the different basnds... so very easy to just slide up to ... say 20m from 15m. I can also set my entire station up in less than seven minutes... I run a 7300, thanks for your videos, you cram so much grerat info in such a short time... 73 NS9T.

Suggestion: In place of the window screen, use a faraday cloth. It actually works better from my experience than a window screen, is super light, and folds down to nothing. I threw my window screen away. Great video. I use some of these in my kit and great info here. 73!

I just heard about those Faraday cloths. I wanted to hear a testimonial before I tried it. Thanks!

Update: Ordered one which is arriving this morning. Also saw one that claims it is aluminum foil on either side of piece of foam. Already tried one "space blanket" which I thought worked but when subjected to a controlled test failed miserably compared to the screen as it was not conductive at all. First thing I will do with both is confirm conductivity, then will try to evaluate them versus the screen. Thanks again, Russ, for the suggestion. And thanks as always to Evan for his videos!

Faraday cloth as a ground plane will fold up into about a 8"x5"x1" , slide into your pack size. Also i mounted the CHA ss 17 to a truckers mirror mount, and a 12" tent stake, so goes up very easy and very quick. So NO tripod, and no ground radials... works best for me.

Great video, Evan. Your style shows off your teaching background; you get A LOT of information transferred quickly and accurately. Thanks. Another factor in field antenna choice is operating style. If you like to set up and operate a single frequency, a high-Q antenna might be just the thing. Myself, I like to hunt and pounce, and band-hop, too. I've had good luck with Chameleon's portable delta loop (tuner required) and with K7BHB's end-fed 33' wire, which is light, easy to carry, and easy to set up, either in a tree, or on a light weight, 6 meter telescoping pole. Please keep these high quality videos coming. Any chance of an FT-8 SOTA activation with the FX-4C?? TU es 73 de N1WMR

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I definitely want to give a loop a shot, I just haven't had the chance yet. As for the FX-4CR on FT8......that video is already shot and will go public on Thanksgiving day ;)

Hello! The vertical is one of the best setup for portable. Better than that would be a 1 element cubical quad ( if you have a truck do yourself a favor and build one heheh) I have the same setup, but I used the “rf will always go through the right way” thing to save some wire on the radials 73!
@EvanK2EJT Жыл бұрын
It's funny, because I don't have to run that many radials on any band but 20. Everything else will tune up with less. 40m only needs 2 sixteen foot radials. Go figure LOL

Another great video, Evan! You got me thinking about my most and least used antennas! I think my ham sticks are actually my most used antennas just because it is the fastest to deploy (mobile). I would prefer to operate away from my vehicle, but time is my most scarce resource these days, so mobile in the park is what happens most of the time.
@EvanK2EJT Жыл бұрын
Yeah, everyone I know who's used ham sticks loves them. I don't have any, so I don't have any personal experience with them, but they must get the job done since so many people recommend them. Thanks for watching!

Hey Evan, great video. What is a good source for making a linked dipole and making single lengths of wire wire antennas. Thank you.

@@EvanK2EJT That is great, thank you but, how do you learn to put the links together?
@EvanK2EJT4 ай бұрын
@@janiceemery2008 So here's what I did. I built a 20, 30, 40 linked dipole. I started by building the 20m portion first, and tuned it to be resonant where I wanted it. I then made little kydex insulators for strain relief. I used simple crimp connectors for the links. Then I made the 30m elements, hooked them up to the 20m dipole, and tuned it. did the same for the 40m portion. I'll shoot a quick KZbin short on how it works so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

Amazon. I have good stuff too (the ABR I have is definitely better), but the cheap stuff gets the job done and I won't cry if it gets cut in half in the field LOL. Thanks for watching!
