K2P2 Rib Stitch for Beginners. You can use this Knit Rib Stitch for Hats and Scarves. It's a very common stitch pattern used in all sorts of knitting projects. This video assumes you can already do a Cast On, Knit Stitch and a Purl Stitch. If you are unsure about those knitting stitches, please check below for links to tutorials showing only those steps. Begin with the knitted Cast On and then right into the Knit stitch. Practice just the casting on and knitting parts first and then when you feel confident, move on to purl stitch.

Thank you so much Natalie! I'm really happy you found it helpful. I get a lot of complainers that it's too slow, but I know that for people trying to learn seeing it slowly over and over is most helpful. Happy knitting!

I was having so much trouble with K2P2, despite it being easy in theory. I think my problem was that my working yarn wasn't in the proper place for the knit and purl stitches, which resulted in there being more stitches on my needles than necessary. Thank you for this tutorial, now I've got it!

I'm so happy to hear this!! YES remembering yarn in front for purl and yarn in back is a simple distinction, but it REALLY helps. It's still a good idea to count your live stitches every few rows to make sure you are still on track, but once you develop the muscle memory for this, it will become very easy for you.

@@XoXoDreaMeoXoX Thank you so very much!! I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment like this! I'm getting myself geared up to start filming tutorials again. It's quite a bit of preplanning and pre knitting to do them, but now that I have a nice indoor space to use, I'm excited to get back to it again. I've been working on finishing up my new office/craft room and catching up on other items that got behind when I was working on that project. And then this week, the weather has been spectacular, so I had to use the opportunity to work on my yard and garage. It's going back to cold tomorrow, so I need to finish up outside projects while I can. I often say I really need to be 3 people. BTW, you can email me with questions you might have. If it's something I know how to do, I can do a video to answer the question. And if I don't know, I can direct you to someone that does know.

I watched at least 6 different videos explaining this and none of them made sense until I watched yours. A lot of them just showed how to do the first row and then says just 'knit the knit and purl the purl" which confused me and I kept doing it wrong thanks for bringing some joy back into my knitting. Is this stitch suitable for a baby blanket?
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes 3 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy it helped you!! To be honest, for a blanket I would do garter stitch which is simply knit every stitch. It will lay flat and it's super squishy. The knit 2 purl 2 is designed for ribbing on the edge of hats and sweaters. You can knit the blanket using circulars like straight needles. If you go to my channel homepage and type knitting in the search feature it will show all the knitting videos I have. See if that helps!

Thanks B-!! I like that marble grey for beginners and to show stitch tutorials, because you can really see what's going on. I find the color or weight of yarn in some videos distracting. So I pretty much stick to the this grey for most everything.
@RecruitingMaven

Ok, but if you will allow me to say that perhaps thinking from the viewers perspective might help? So you like grey but what are other high viewer/subs channel using in their tutorials? Just a thought for ya!
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes 7 жыл бұрын
It's not as much that "I like grey" it's that it's the easiest for a beginner to work with. It's the easiest to see the stitches and to get a feel for what they are doing. This weight and needle combination are designed to help beginners get themselves going. You have to be able to see the stitches to understand knitting, and this yarn photographs the best and is easiest to see what you're doing. Plus, it's on brand if I do my tutorials in this color. Views for tutorials are a result of ranking well in search.

If you have to decrease a row, and have to start with knit stitch in the new row, what should be the last stitch in the previous row? Knit or purl ? Thank you

That's impossible to answer without know exactly what you pattern you're following. I'm sorry I can't answer without a little more information.

The pattern I'm using says to begin odd numbered rows with K2 and even numbered rows with P2 and to work 13 rows in double rib. Does that mean for my first row I'd knit 2 stitches and then purl 2 stitches and repeat till the end and then for the second row I'd purl 2 stitches and then knit 2 stitches?
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes 2 ай бұрын
Oh Lord. That is so confusing which I why I have trouble with knitting patterns! The best thing to do is knit your knit stitches and purl your purls. Do that until you have 13 rows. I hope that helps!

Can someone pls help me? I have a problem, I can knit this stitch just fine when I have a small number of cast ons, like 14 or 12 but when I cast on 30 or 40 the stitch’s come out all wrong like there’s all these bumps. I’ve watched so many videos and no one has had the same problem as me.
@PattymacMakes
@PattymacMakes 3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what is happening. Unless you are cramming too many stitches onto a straight needle and having tension issues. If you want to knit a flat fabric with a lot of cast on stitches, I recommend knitting on circular needles with a longer cable so your work has room to spread out. For example, if you are knitting a baby blanket, it's a lot of stitches to cast on and not going to work very well on two straight needles. Try this video and see if it helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/moWakmd8a7Bpn9E

Lori you just have to physically do the the knitting to understand. Knit stitches pull the working yarn in back and purl stitches pull it to the front. I would recommend you concentrate only doing knit stitches for a while so that makes sense first. I suggest making this simple scarf which I what I recommend as a first project to everyone. pattymacmakes.com/easy-scarf-knitting-pattern-for-beginners/. When you finish this one, you'll understand knit stitch and then you can try to add purls. I hope that helps. Knitting is something you have to do to learn it. You can't just watch videos to get it. And often you need to watch a few videos to see it differently to understand. But I don't know of anyone slower than my demos.
